Thank you for taking the time to do a video I'm just about completely remodeled my 67 Baja off of RU-vid alone. PS you don't have to drain the oil if you put your jack under the axle by the shock mount. Saves a lot of time and stops the oil from all leaking out Hope it helps 👍💪 thanks again for the video

I have a 1970 Beetle that had a clogged fuel line; I put about 2 inches of fuel line on each end, closed off the outlet side with a screwdriver and ring clamp, and used a child's medicine syringe to pump evapo-rust in the in let side of the line until it was full. I then used a ring clamp to hold the syringe in place making sure there was pleasure in the line so I could tell if there were any leaks in the tunnel. I let it sit for four days and then used a long throttle cable to run in and out of the line before using LOW PSI air to blow out the line, then I blew fuel through the line. That solved my issue.

Looks like you didn't pre-lubricate the seal when you put it back on the driveshaft, and therefore, the friction between the seal and the driveshaft will cause heat and ruin the seal when you first drive it. Consequently, it'll leak again within a couple of hundred miles. Always lubricate the inside on any new seals when installing them. Good luck 👍

That seal/bearing retainer drain hole, is supposed to have a matching hole in your brake caliper mount, so it drains toward the inside, away from your brake rotor, or brake drum on a stock rear end. I don't know if it's possible to drill through that one without damaging anything, but worth looking into.😉 *EDIT:* 225-250 ft. lbs. on that axle nut!! That impact won't provide nearly that much torque. You'll need to do it with the wheel on, or get a 5 or 6 ft. long piece of *HEAVY* angle iron, and drill it for 2 of the wheel studs and brace it on the ground behind the car to keep the rotor from turning. If you don't get the axle nut tight enough, it WILL loosen up and strip the splines out of your brake rotor (or drum).😳 *EDIT:* Something else I noticed when you were pulling out, is your dual carb setup doesn't have a 'balance tube' between the two carbs. This makes for a lot easier tuning and synchronization. You can pull the manifolds and drill and tap the front runners on each for 3/8" pipe thread, and get a couple of 3/8" barb fittings, and run a 3/8 fuel hose across in front of the blower housing, between the two manifolds.😊

If you build that engine and add 4-wheel disc brakes and perform a complete chassis restoration, why would you stop at the swing axles and not install the 69 and later fully independent rear suspension? I love the sound you got out of that exhaust. Very mellow.

You were right not to omit the washer between the cover plate and the seal. If you remove the rotor the washer holds the small o-ring under pressure, so it doesn´t start leaking until you put the rotor back on.

I can see some metal shavings on the magnet but it’s normal. I believe you change the oil on a rebuilt transaxle after the first 600 miles and then every 30,000 miles. You should’ve used the old seal to hammer the new one in instead of using another new one. The parts to be used on the kit depends on the year and type of seal retainer on the axle. They vary. To torque the axle nut to spec the Torque Multiplier is the best tool and you can also use it to torque your flywheel as well.
@frankscott6054
@frankscott6054 Год назад
Cool video! A couple of things that i noticed was as you first took it apart and in addition to the boogered seal was that 1) the axle nut was way too easy to get off (not torqed tight enough to prevent stripping the splines in the hub), and i did not see the axle sealing O-ring or o-ring backing washer and it may have been stuc to the cover but i didnt see the large o-ring that seals around the bearing against the cap. Of course it was just a quick glimpse and i may have missed them but be sure to install those out of your kit. They keep oil from running down between the spacer and the axle shaft. And if you've ever wondered why the kits always come with two gaskets, they also fit the gear reducted busses which need two gaskets. I saw you got it sorted out during reassembly and in the correct order. One tip, insert the spacer into the seal before you install the cover. That way you can check the backside to make sure there isnt a problem with the seal.

That axle nut, when you removed it and especially when you tightened it was definitely not tight enough. It should be superman tight with that impact. Obviously wasn't the cause of the leak but loose axle nuts will cause way more issues than that easy seal fix.

@julianroberts7116 Год назад
Hey mate. Good work, we're getting there. Did you really have to drain the gearbox? Was it not possible to just lift up the rear axle to stop the oil coming out, clean it up then put the new seal on? Then you could have just topped up the gearbox to replace the bit of oil that had leaked. Hey and don't forget that cotter pin, please! We don't want you crashing. One last thing - that big washer you put in the big blue seal - I may be wrong so don't panic, but it just 'looks wrong' to me! It may be fine, but are you sure it goes there? Just keep on ironing out these little snags and you'll have the body back on in no time. Good luck fella. All the best. x
