Today I attempt to use a hand-held ball joint press to install ball joints on a Data 44 front 4WD axle. It doesn't go well, so I used the press. On the plus side, I really like these Mevotech ball joints!
Parts from Rock Auto
Upper ball joints: Mevotech TXMS50569
Lower ball joints: Mevotech TXK8195T
Small 12-ton press from Harbor Frieght
Tools and stuff:
Ball joint spanner socket: amzn.to/3m00U3c
Ball joint (and U joint) press: amzn.to/3xJhEhX

He just bought the Mevotech joints because he wants to be like me when he grows up.

I live on 20 acres, which is a good thing since when I do stuff like this I don't have close neighbors to hear me yell and cuss.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a ball joint press without loading up the swear jar. Snap-On has a kit where all of the adapters have detents so they snap together but the kit is like $1k and I don’t do enough to justify it for diy use especially when my machine shop will turn around stuff like that job in a day for very little money.

Even your torque wrench was swearing in this one.

Mevotech's premium line are top shelf quality. They also have a 'better than OEM' line that usually has blue silicon boots on them. Those are quite good quality, too. It's a damn shame that MOOG was bought by Federal Mogul and many of the products that are boxed and labeled as MOOG are actually made by Quick Steer in Turkey. They're not awful, if it's all that's available. _But!_ . . if it says MOOG on the box, it should be a MOOG part. Mevotech is good stuff. You can install them with complete confidence.

Yeah, Moog used to be the go-to for me but the quality has just slowly got to the toilet over the past 20 years

I bought a set of early A body Moog upper ball joints and they came from China. I was bummed out. I then realized the disc brake conversion kits all use the later style A body ball joints so I exchanged the early style ones for the later style, also Moogs. The later Moog ball joints are made in the US! I’m not sure if I lucked out and got old stock or if production for the late A/B body part hadn’t been moved over seas yet. Those MavTech ball joints look nice. Being from rust country I appreciate any part that comes painted.

@@BlindBatG34 I ordered MOOG outer tie-rods for my Jeep, from NAPA. They called me when they came in and said one was MOOG and the other was a Quick Steer with a MOOG label on the box. They asked if I still wanted them, I said no, they refunded my money, no restock fee. So that was nice. Autozone was able to get me two made in the USA MOOG parts. Yeah, it's become a bit of a crap shoot.

I have a 77 dodge w100, is this the same front end. Im getting ready to do the ball joints brake rotors and wheel bearings. It's the full time 4x4 Dana 44 fbj and from what I've researched so far it's not an easy job

The wheel bearings on the full-time 4WD are a pain in the ass.

Did you ever replace the ball joints on the drag link and torsion bar for the dana 44? If so what ball joints did you go with, or are they the same as the ones in the video going into the knuckle?
@YoshimoshiGarage
@YoshimoshiGarage Год назад
I've not done a torsion bar version of it, but I suspect it will be a very similar process.
