In the chapter 3 summary/comic, it shows that Kinji was behind Kanata, so that means she couldn’t have seen who made her black out. He could of stop killing Kanata after killing Kakeru, so he didn’t need a double murder, he already killed Kakeru.
I think the reason why Tsurugi was able to be saved by divine luck is because Yuki saw it happen RIGHT in front of his eyes. With the others, they didn't exactly know a murder was happening in that moment.
That's good and all but the heavenly luck ability gives you what you want. Yuki never wanted anyone to die the whole time but heavenly luck never granted that wish so its inconsistent. Even if he never saw anyone else die, he wished that no one would die but his ability doesn't activate for some reason
@@DerpyHiro I think that might be because Kinjo's was such a fresh death? With the others they've been left for ages at this point- Seeing someone die right in front of Yuki's eyes with the death bring so fresh gave Tsurugi just enough energy to hold on. At least that's how I see it. Though I will concede that heavenly luck is really dumb- And the way they explain it just makes it nonsensical. I did find it an intresting approach to luck though. Utsuro would absolutely kill himself if he could. However his luck just holds him back from death. Its only when he is completely subverted and his plans don't go to plan that he can finally rest in peace. In essence, Akane going against his wishes was the best thing to happen to him.
i'm a bit late but actually, the thing is yuki just reacted to kinjo's death by saying "no he's alive" "he's not dead" and multiple things like this, that is why heavenly luck got procked
Something I'd like to mention in regards to chapter 6 and I enjoyed the commentary for all of these rankings :D. Now for the comment about why Kurokawa didn't write a note or will about the truth of the past is that monokuma mentioned that if Mikako express the truth in words or actions, a severe pain would stop it, from what I can consider about that is that Kurokawa was basically bound by her own brain during the killing game which is sad due to her true nature.
That IS still cheap, I mean, what a coincidence right? Oh wait, it's obviously LUCK!! Yeah, HIS luck stopped her from saying all of that! (I feel like Utsuro's luck could have been used in such a better way...)
When it comes to question of "If heavenly luck revived tsurugi just because Yuki wanted it, why did this not work with the other characters?" I always thought it was like this: Of course, Yuki didnt want all the other characters to die, and was saddened by their deaths, but Tsurugi's death was the only one where Yuki was *vehemently* denying it over and over. "No, Tsurugi can't be dead! He's not the type to die so easily! He's still alive, he HAS to be!" And so on. His relentless persistence on denying it basically just made heavenly luck go "ok fine, jeez, you can get this one back." Or something along those lines. Great video by the way! I consider Utsuro my favorite character from the first game, and i really like the concept of heavenly luck, but i do agree that in many cases it can literally just be used as some sort of bandaid to explain away plot contrivences in the game. It's kinda lame.💀
Also (unless I'm forgetting something) Tsurugi is the only death that Yuki actually _sees_. Heavenly Luck only works on things that have a non-zero chance of happening. Yuki can see a dead body and want that person to not be dead, but that won't make them come back to life. With Tsurugi, he wanted Tsurugi to survive at the exact moment he pulled the trigger, so Heavenly Luck made him survive.
One of the things about heavenly luck is that it can not control peoples decisions. It can influence but in the end the choice is still the persons. Heavenly luck does not take free will away. Also kinjo did not call akane a murderer just for lying. The other reason was that akane was the first one to stab kizuna even if she didn't mean to.
It doesn't take away the choices people make but it can make some choices meaningless in terms of what happens in the plot. Like with Mikako telling Kisaragi to stop pursing Utsuro and Akane, it doesn't really matter if she chose to do that or not because at the end of the day Utsuro wants the killing game to happen. So even if Kisaragi decided to pursue Utsuro and Akane, he had no chance of preventing the killing game from happening.
Nagito's luck bullshit was at least balanced by it giving him extremely bad luck as well, which left him terminally ill and mentally unstable. Usturo is literally OP. The only thing stopping him from having the happiest life with his parents, or completely winning in the end, is his stupidity and apathy.

Btw, there's also another reason to why Tsurugi called akane taira a second hand murderer, it's because she hid from the group that she was the one who stabbed Kizuna.
Here's my rankings for the cases: Number 6: Trial 1. I actually like this trial. I don't think this game has any objectively bad trials, but this one is just kind of tedious to go through. Mitch is kind of an obvious culprit, and this cast has a lot of characters that aren't good at trials, which makes the first trial a little annoying at times for me. It doesn't help that Kinjo, who usually leads trials, isn't really saying much in this trial for some reason, Rei refuses to help, and Mikako can't talk very much for obvious reasons in hindsight. I do like Mitch's talent being used in the murder with the rubber ball, but this trial is a bit of a first test Linuj, just like DerpyHiro said. Kiyoka also ends up being very forgettable until the trial 6 flashback. Number 5: Trial 3. I actually like how there's a confusion with the time in this case, and how Kinji tried to get his biggest threats, Rei and Kinjo, out of the picture at least for a while. Unfortunately, this case's victims also kind of suffer from the same thing case 1's victim does, since Kakeru and Kanata never really get their time in the spotlight. I guess you could argue Kakeru's big moment was trying to save Kanata, but then he fails and dies. Forgettable victims and a murder plan that makes very little sense, but Kinji's breakdown is pretty cool, and I like how it sets up Kinjo's inner conflict for the next two chapters. It's also nice to see characters like Haru try to contribute more during trials, even if he's wrong most of the time. Kinji is unfortunately another victim of the typical trope of always having 2 victims in chapter 3, even though it only makes his plan worse and makes him arguably the most obvious culprit in the game. Honestly, none of the culprits in this game are super hard to guess in my opinion, aside from maybe Ayame, but we'll get to her. This case is interesting in my opinion, but very flawed. I like Kinji, so I'm a little biased, which is one of the reasons why this case isn't in last place, but there are some good things to take away here, even with the errors. Number 4: This trial and the next trial are very close for me, but not for the same reasons they are for DerpyHiro. Case 5 does have some interesting things going on, but I personally just don't like it very much when Monokuma cheats. While I do think it's interesting how Mikako goes out, I can't help but feel like she probably should have been more important before this case. She really doesn't contribute much to trials before this case. If it wasn't for trial 6, Kisaragi also would have felt like a bit of a waste, but I like Rei taking the lead, Teruya trying his hardest to move past his mistakes and contribute in some way, and the mastermind reveal coming earlier than normal. This trial is obviously taking things from THH trial 5, but there are key differences that let it stand on its own. Kinjo coming in and explaining who the mastermind is makes Mikako's clue before she dies kind of pointless, though. Number 3: Trial 2 does a lot of good things to set up future conflicts for the game: Kinjo's grudge against Akane, Kinjo being thrown out of the group, Yuki being seen as a potential traitor, Mikako knowing more than she is telling us, and even Ayame being the key character in convincing Akane to choose her classmates over Utsuro. Kizuna is also interesting in her own right since the game commits to her being a bad person, which is kind of rare. My big problem with this case is the culprit. This is a sacrifice case based around Akane and Ayame's friendship, but their friendship kind of came out of nowhere. Yuki just runs into them in chapter 2 and they say they're best friends. This case also seems to try to hit you in the feels, but it just... didn't for me. Ayame was such a quiet character before this case that it felt like I barely knew her. I also think the game didn't sell Ayame's desire to leave very well. Say what you want about Mitch being an obvious culprit, but the game at least showed over the course of chapter 1 how he was desperate to get out. He was constantly complaining about not being able to leave, which was good foreshadowing for case 1 in my opinion. Until the chapter 2 post-trial, I never got the sense that Ayame was desperate to leave. Despite all these complaints, I do think this trial is pretty good overall, just not my favorite. Number 2: Trial 4 also sets up a lot of character changes that I like, such as Rei joining the group, Teruya trying to grow up and stop being selfish, and Kinjo finally realizing that he's wrong about all killers being evil. The idea of the culprit coming out immediately and confessing is also interesting, especially since she doesn't really know what happened because it was the victim's plan. All Satsuki really did was fire a bullet through Haruhiko's chest. Haru did literally everything else in this case. The character to create a massive change in the killing game being the CLOWN of all characters is also interesting to me because she was mostly a joke character until chapter 4. That's actually my only issue with this case: Satsuki was kind of just there until chapter 4, but the impact that she has on the rest of the cast, even after case 4 is really good in my opinion, and kind of makes up for it. Number 1: This trial is here mostly because I really like how it acts as a transition into the next game, which I personally love. The flashback gives characters who desperately needed more screentime some love, like Kiyoka, Mitch, and Yamato. Mikako and Akane were also great in the flashbacks. I like how it subverts Makoto shooting everyone with hope bullets in the final trial of THH, and Utsuro plunges everyone into despair. This may be unpopular, but I also think how Kinjo is affected is an interesting change in him. Survivors in this series tend to either get better or stay the same, but Kinjo seems to get worse. I just like the survivors of this game in general. There isn't really one survivor that feels like "Why did YOU survive?" in my opinion. Kisaragi also ends up being the hero in the end, which really improved my opinion of him. I didn't mind heavenly luck that much, even though there are a bunch of plot holes when you take it into consideration. Trial 6 is just a good way to wrap things up and look toward the next game in my opinion. But these are just opinions. Feel free to disagree.
I disagree with "Satsuki was just there until chapter four". Satsuki's main feat was convincing everyone to trust Yuki in chapter 3 after everyone kicked him out of the no-kinjo cult. If it weren't for her, the whole course of the game might have changed for the worst. She also had small impacts on the atmosphere, as she acted with Akane to bright up the group in cases of despair. She also changed Haruhiko for the better, as when he's not on a leash he's a wild animal lol-
My personal opinion (best to worst): - I love you, Akane! And Utsuro is better Izuru, change my mind. - Wow, an actually good Chapter 3! And a motive that is great! (I think Celeste's motive works, Mikan's is... decent, and Korekiyo's is dog water) - Chapter 4... I wanna cry- AAAAAAA - Chapter 5 ends up slightly below Chapter 4 because I feel like we needed more time with Yamato prior to his death. - Chapter 2. An interesting trial, but not as good as the others. - Chapter 1. Eh. Within a few minutes, it was easy to guess Mitch was the killer-
6. Trial 5- I liked the Mukuro case, but this one just felt like an inferior copy of it. 5. Trial 1- Not bad but just really simple. 4. Trial 6- Pretty ok trial but the flashbacks really helped make it a good finale to the game. 3. Trial 3- It was pretty obvious Kinji was going to be the killer, but I actually thought this was one of the more clever double murders. 2. Trial 2- There's a bit of weird logic in this case so I can't rank it first, but everything else about the mystery was great. Ayame and Kizuna were both really interesting with good motives for such an early chapter. 1. Trial 4- This chapter does the motive of 2-4 so much better than the official game did. It was also a cool idea to have the killer confess in the beginning but not able to prove as much until the very end
Here's my personal list 6. Case 1, it was a decent case I'd say, does have too many similarities to thh for my liking but I really like the execution for mitch 5. Case 3, like you said, the plan does have plot holes and very convoluted, plus Kinji being able to put a piece of wood inside the room Inori and escape made no sense to me and was never touched apon. The motive was excellent though and made me like Kinji more 4. Case 6, The build up to this case throughout the game really helped sell it for me, and seeing all about the cast's past and life before the killing game was awesome to see! Trial itself was good too, it held my interest pretty well! 3. Case 5, It was short but it did have a lot going for it, Mikako being pressured in a corner but being unable to speak was a cool idea and having Yamato coming in this chapter was also very interesting, also kinjo exposing akane was great as well 2. Case 4, I do like the emotional scene of Satsuki and Haru at the end of the trial and find their contrasts in think (Haru trying to save just satsuki and satsuki willing to die for everyone) so good. Teruya's involvement was good and kinjo breaking was awesome as well. 1. Case 2, I really liked mostly everything I saw, Kinjo being useful and interesting throughout the case, Akane and Kinjo's conflict, Kizuna's morality, Ayame's morality, the build up to the murder, all so good. The originality also was a huge plus for me, I always perfer to see something new done over a recycled idea. Although the case was long, it had enough going for it to justify its length, but like you said, Ayame's leg getting cut wasn't decisive evidence. I just thought her leg was already past the wire and when she was taking another step, she swung her leg back a little like how you normally walk and cut it that way. Overall though, I loved the case! Overall, this fangan is fantastic and the fact this persona was able to complete not one, but two fangans which that alone alone is an extremely impressive feat and I have upmost respect to the creator for their dedication to the projects. Also props to anyone that has/will create a fangan, even if they canceled, I will still respect your efforts for trying to create something special for many to enjoy.
Im not sure about definitive rankings, but case 2 was by far my favourite, partially because im biased (Ayame was my favourite) but also because it was really interesting in the mystery it set up.
I agree with you that I don't like the use of luck in the first game. However, Nagito's use of luck is great. It restricts "luck" to what you would think of. He picks the red chopstick, wins at russian roulette, and sticks the desired person with the murder weapon. It really only comes up when Nagito needs to win a die roll. The author of the SDRA games interprets luck way more broadly than the canon series. I only watched SDRA2 but it sounds like the problem was there in SDRA1 too, lol.
My list goes like this, tho I will say that A. None of these are bad and B. the chapter surrounding the trial impacted the ranking 1. Chapter 4 - I’m a sucker for parties 2. Chapter 2 - ayame my beloved 3. Chapter 6 - Utsuro is a better version of Izuru fight me 4. Chapter 1 - goodbye soccer boy 5. Chapter 3 - why was all this necessary 6. Chapter 5 - I wasn’t a fan of the original Danganronpa’s case 5, tho this one does do it better I will say
My rankings 6: trial 3 5: trial 5 4: trial 2 3: trial 1 2: trial 4 1: trial 6 The cases were ok but most of them made no sense and could have been done a lot better in my opinion
A little late here but for Kinji "improvisation", one thing you have to consider is that Kinji was attacked by Yamaguchi with a big wound so even if he killed both in the art room and left he would clearly be the most suspicious as nobody else would have a wound. This could help explain at least why he attacked Kinjo and Mekaru so at least he wouldn't be the "odd one out".
Here are my rankings :) 6-Case 1 It's the first trial, it's not gonna be the best, honestly considering the other first trials in the original series and SDRA2 this trial is pretty meh, Mitch's plan is basic "lure someone in and game end them", it reminds me of the 1st class trial in THH, Kiyoka deserved better :( 5-Case 3 Even though it's pretty low, this case is actually pretty good, this is way better then any Case 3 in the original series, and probably one of the better 3rd cases in the fandom, only being won over by Danganrebirth Case 3 and SDRA2 Case 3, unlike the other third killers, Kinji actually had a good motive, and i like how they still made him *break* like the other third killers and honestly his breakdown is better than the other 3rd killers, but i don't think it's as good of a breakdown as *the one who shall not be named*, the trial was also pretty enjoyable soon to be updated...
Honestly, Chapter 3 can often be weak because they kind of go on a default. Sdra2 showed that a little reinvention is all that’s needed. You just need to do something like 2 killers. This could be either someone kills the killer in self defense or two people killed someone each and only the first killer is executed, giving chapter 4 a silent motive of someone who has killed before.

So, I liked the commentary you did on Danganronpa Another. From what I heard, Danganronpa another 2 has better quality, more original trials (MUCH LONGER TOO!!!) and plot. Plus there's a more unique cast and some characters get a glow up! I'm not saying Danganronpa Another is terrible, but you should really check Dra2.
