Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc Character Tier List 

I can’t wait for byakuya to be in bottom tier, mid tier, and top tier all at the same time

A part of me wishes you did the school mode for the remaining free time events before making a character tier list, to have a full grasp on all 15 characters. At the same time, seeing your initial thoughts storywise will still be cool

Such a based take on Makoto. Love his progression throughout the story and the way people write him off makes me sad.

My personal opinions: D Tier: -Mukuro I liked her as Junko early on and she makes for some great drama later on but we just get so little of her that at least just based on the game itself, I can’t rank her much higher than this. -Leon I like his design and I did genuinely feel bad for him after the first trial, plus his execution is one of the most memorable in the series. But ultimately he just does so little that he leaves hardly any impact on me. C Tier: -Hifumi I think I actually like him slightly more than most people. He had times where he was honestly pretty funny and I felt bad that he got manipulated by Celeste. Plus I really like his VA. But yeah he’s mostly a bit of a creep, not particularly complex and hardly contributes much overall. So he ranks no higher than C for me. -Genocide Jill I honestly thought she brought this very unique flavor of weird that made the game feel that much more tense and simultaneously silly when she was around, which is an odd combination to have. Her obsession with Byakuya teeters back and forth between being kinda funny and just being creepy and annoying to me. I do like how much energy she brings but ultimately during the later parts of the game I’m almost always wishing Toko was there instead. -Sayaka She’s grown on me somewhat over time, but ultimately she still just isn’t very interesting to me. Her voice is a bit grating and I feel like the game really pushed her onto us way too much so that when she actually died I wasn’t all that surprised. Still, the twist of her trying to frame Makoto was really cool, she has an understandable motive and I like that she did still care about Makoto at least to some extent. She was just desperate and her being pushed into this corner is what Monokuma was going for, and her betrayal really sets the tone for that sense of apprehensiveness towards each other that the characters hold for most of the remaining game. B Tier: -Yasuhiro I know he feels like he’s just there for us to contradict most of the time but he did genuinely get quite a few laughs out of me. Watching his little moments of development were very satisfying to me largely because of how much bigger of a change was needed to get someone like him to take those steps. -Celeste Her design and VA are excellent but I feel she was a bit underutilized. Considering how clever she’s set up to be and how she’s supposed to be this amazing liar with incredible luck, her actual murder plan was remarkably easy to see through for me. She drew so much attention to herself that suspecting anybody else felt unnecessary. Still, she is definitely the coolest character outside of Kyoko herself, and I honestly love how simple and petty her motive is, plus that execution is one of my favorites. She felt like someone who wasn’t fully evil, just that she hadn’t really matured enough yet to be less selfish. That was my interpretation anyway. -Toko Toko was for me a B Tier character with A or S Tier potential. Granted I have not played the spin-off game, watched the anime or read any of the light novels so there’s a good chance she can move up later on. For now though she gets to the top of my B Tier because I think she played a very valuable role in setting the tone of the game, plus her Ultimate Writing Prodigy talent is my favorite in the game. She’s a character that is very hard to approach but made me really invested in getting to know her better which is always a plus in my book. There’s nothing more important in my eyes than making the player more interested in your characters. Toko accomplished that for me. A Tier: -Chihiro I really love Chihiro’s story about overcoming perceived weaknesses in yourself and while they do die pretty early on their impact is felt throughout the rest of the game. While the game does tell you that Chihiro identifies as male canonically and I tend to adopt that gender identity when referring to the character, I can understand why so many people prefer giving them ambiguous pronouns and see them as a character relatable to those who’ve had any form of the transgender experience. -Mondo I always liked Mondo being the tough guy with a good heart. I think that the desire to see him overcome his intimating exterior and prove such stereotypes wrong makes his failure to keep his promise when he succumbs to his weakness all the more heartbreaking. While he isn’t quite my favorite strong character in the game, he definitely has one of my favorite backstories in the series that gives him a lot of depth and makes him one the most tragic killers in the series to me. -Kiyotaka If I could have had any character make it to the end who didn’t, it would be him. In fact he might be my top choice in the whole series for that along with a certain character from V3 whom I won’t get into. It’s so hard for me to understand why some people find him annoying. Yes he’s bossy, but he really is trying to do the best he can and his pure innocence getting tested and pushed to the brink is one of the saddest things to me about this game. His death just feels so sudden and unimportant, he really deserved better. -Junko As an antagonist I think Junko is fantastic. She is exactly the kind of person that makes this whole concept work. Her VAs do a great job, and she absolutely steals every scene she’s in. The only reason I don’t have her in S Tier is that she just doesn’t get much time and she has no depth to her at all. I get that that is…kind of the point. But it still makes her harder for me to be invested in than the characters in my S Tier. S Tier: -Makoto As a protagonist he isn’t quite the most complex or interesting but he really works for this first entry in the series. His unbreakable spirit, big heart and naivety contrasts really well with a cast full of Monokuma, Kyoko, Byakuya and Celeste. His development isn’t super nuanced but I really enjoy it. Personally I think he’s underrated as a protagonist even if he’s not quite my favorite in the series. -Aoi I am rather biased because her character type is one i pretty much always love, but that doesn’t mean she feels like a copy of others. She manages to balance being rather dumb at times with still being very likable with her enthusiasm, high energy and close relationship with Sakura. She was actually my second favorite character after my initial playthrough of the game, largely because of the great development she gets in Chapter 4. Though she has dropped a couple places since then she’s still a joy to have in the game. -Kyoko My first impression of Kyoko was that she felt kinda bland and overhyped if I’m being honest. She felt too distant and aloof at times, and almost too perfect. However as time has gone on I’ve come to realize just how vital she is to this game. She is the character that makes this game what it is for me, and there’s a reason every time I hear the track New World Order I think of her. The amount of memorable twist revelations and dramatic moments that are spearheaded by Kyoko is almost too many to count. Her dynamic with Makoto is genuinely a contender for my favorite ship in the series because of just how much they complement each other. -Byakuya Yes he is an asshole. He deserved that slap about 50 times over, and I can never fault someone for disliking him. But there’s just so many little things I appreciate about his character. I love his increasing incredulity at the stupidity and insanity going on around him. I like how he slowly but surely begins to trust and rely on Makoto more and more as the story goes on while almost never outright admitting this growing attachment. His too-cool-for-you demeanor can be obnoxious much of the time but it makes all the moments of him showing genuine weakness or kindness, however small, feel all the more significant. His breakdown in Chapter 4 where Kyoko just lays the smack down on him is incredibly satisfying, and having him permanently change his goals from winning the game to escaping the school with everyone and defeating the mastermind makes for one of the best moments in the series. He just grows on you like a tumor, even if I can still never forgive or forget his behavior, it’s hard for me not to really like his character for what it brings to the game by the time everything is said and done. Plus I love his declaration at the end of the game that even if his whole family is gone and everything he thought gave him value was taken from him, that his family’s legacy isn’t dead as long as he is still alive. He just has so much confidence in himself, and for better or worse it’s hard not to get behind it in moments like that. -Sakura I personally think Byakuya and Kyoko are the “best” characters in terms of most interesting. But Sakura is always going to be my favorite. I don’t have a lengthy monologue to explain why, she just impressed me more than anybody else. She was truly the strongest one of them all, in every sense. Her relationship with Aoi is great, I love her fierce loyalty and that she never gave up on everyone no matter how dire the circumstances. It was her sacrifice that got everyone to band together during the endgame, and I think that makes her a truly special character. Plus her free time events are really sweet. Any character that can make Monokuma nervous is a badass in my book.

I agree with a lot of your opinions here actually! My favs are Taka, Chihiro, Sakura and Toko but other than them most of the cast is ranked where I would put them.

I love Byakuya and Junko. Hiro will always be bottom tier for me personally. Just because he does absolutely nothing except waste time. He literally spent 30 minutes in trial 5 trying to explain that Kyoko was somehow a ghost. Despite her being right in front of him.

You said it yourself. This tier list is **your** opinion. As a Togami fan, I would have placed him much higher, but everyone is allowed to like different characters. That's the appeal of character-driven games like Danganronpa afterall.

My tier, just based on the story: D 18. Leon (didn't really connect with him nor enjoy him, and died early on, resulting in a colossal lack of character development) 17. Mukuro (we never got to know her real personality, so couldn't really put her any higher than this) 16. Sayaka (same as Leon, except I kind of like her. Almost made it to C tier) C 15. Mondo (same as Leon, it's just that we got to know more of him) 14. Taka (enjoyed his character, it's just that he was killed before he could develop more after Mondo's death) 13. Hiro (didn't like him at first, but got used to him and came to take a liking to his dumb personality. If he didn't survive and died early on, he would be in D because of me not getting used to him) B 12. Hifumi (we start the realm of characters I really like. The only reason Hifumi is here is because of how many memorable moments, sentences and fourth wall breaks he had) 11. Makoto (not higher nor lower due to IMO being a plain protagonist. He's not bad at all, but he's not too different from your average main character. Still, he had his moments) 10. Aoi (same as Hiro. Didn't like her at first for being your typical "fanservice dumb anime girl", but as the story progressed and she survived, I got to like her a lot, in addition to her "depth" after Sakura's death. Almost made it to A tier) A 9. Chihiro (really liked him from the beginning, and had one of my favourite backstories. Alter Ego just made me like him even more. If he's not higher than this is because of how early on he died, thus resulting in a lack of potential character development) 8. Kyoko (made her way up to this tier by force. Like, the game FORCES you to like her, and I'm not complaining, she's amazing. Despite the fact that she's in low A tier, she made it to S tier when I made the list) 7. Toko (she may be hard to approach, but there's something I love about her that I can't really put into words. Maybe it's because I NEVER found a character like her, and she has some deep trauma hard to spot if you don't pay close attention. Definitely an interesting one) 6. Fake Junko (in spite of the early death she suffered, she made her way up here because of how bright she shined among her classmates. She was my favourite girl early on, before the Mukuro plot twist, and her personality was amazing) 5. Sakura (I really liked her from the very beginning, and my liking for her only grew as the story progressed. She truly was the strongest in most ways, and her death and case were the saddest IMO. Almost made it to S tier) S 4. Junko (her reveal and personality were simply spectacular, and in spite of only appearing in the last trial, she absolutely deserves this spot. I'm a fan of GOOD antagonists and villains, and Junko most definitely was one) 3. Celeste (after I finished the game, I would have put her in B, or even A, but I don't know why, her character grew on me even after the end of my playthrough. Her personality is just too great for us mortals) 2. Byakuya (my favourite boy from beginning to end. Just like Toko, he was hard to approach, but there was something about him that made me adore him. I can't quite explain. Upon surviving with the other 5, his personality further solidified and became even better) 1. Genocide Jill (not much to say, other than her quirkiness, randomness and commentary was plainly excellent. I enjoyed her a lot, making Toko in general my favourite character)

HOT TAKE: Roamer’s opinions on Genocide Jack MIGHT improve when Ultra Despair Girls

Your tier list is pretty fair from my point of view! It's pretty nice you were willing to give Togami a C, despite how he was written to be despised he does grow on us at the end of the day. Toko being also C is fair considering she was a character that didn't have a good start and did not get any better throughout the game. Speaking of Toko... This is where I really hesitate to recommend you the side game Ultra Despair Girl. Toko (and yes Jill by extension) is the secondary protagonist and they greatly improved her as a character (from C to A) without removing any of the traits that made her "her", from what I remember at least. But why I would not recommend is that this game is by far the most controversial of the entire franchise. Trigger Happy Havoc had his dark upsetting moments but this is a whole other level of weird and unsettling, and I'm NOT saying this lightly. We are speaking major triggering moments regarding a certain age group... Of course to play the game you would first need to play the sequel as Ultra Despair Girl would spoil just about every important element of the second game so you'll have all the time in the world to really consider whether to skip it or not. It IS canon to the lore but if you are gonna play Ultra Despair Girls in the far future, be VERY careful as the subject matters treated there can be upsetting to most of audiences. I'm really saying all this so you don't eventually go in blind expecting a game with the same degree of horror as the rest of the series.

Here's all the differences I know as a good reminder to remember which Junko is Which and just a fun observation Real Junko- Bigger boobs, Monokuma Hair Ties, Rounder eyes, Smaller Lashes, shorter but thicker eyebrows, Black and white tie with red emblem on it, Choker, No Freckles, Red Bow on jacket, Red design on her bra that sticks out, and a slightly redder shirt button Mukuro as Junko- Smaller Chest, Rabbit and Bow hair accessories, Smaller more slanted eyes, Thicker and Longer Lashes, longer but thinner eyebrows, White tie with black dotted design, No Choker, Freckles, No Red bow on jacket, Plain Black Bra, and her buttons are a more darker red

My personal ranking from worst to best. It will be a little biased, ngl, because I simp and/or kin some of these characters, but it's still my personal opinion. I will be using canon and Danganronpa IF to base my opinions on these characters. I won't go into any detail tho about IF- Hifumi (the whole him and Alter Ego thing was horrible and disgusting IMHO, and he killed Taka without asking for more evidence that Taka stole the laptop.) Leon (I mean- we hardly get to know him, and he killed Sayaka purely because the creators got tired at looking at them both.) Hiro (At least he lived longer, but me and him didn't click at all. I felt like he and Aoi could've contributed a little more to the story, not just the trials because they do sometimes help during those.) Real Junko (Yes, her twist was crazy, but she plunged the world into despair just because she could and she was bored. I still love Junko tho!) Sayaka (Same as Leon, but at least we got to know her better before she died.) Toko (Even though I kin her, I hate how she and Jill stalked Togami and said perverted stuff about him. I love her, but not as much as others.) Aoi (I loved her until I realized that her only really big moment was in the 4th trial... it made me feel like we were cheated out of a character.) Mukuro as Junko (I LOVED HER so much, but I felt like she died a little early.) Real Mukuro (I can't say anything, but IF made me appreciate her sm more.) Genocide Jill (I love how random she is- she's just so fun when she's not talking about Togami) Togami (IDK WHY but I love him. I guess I somewhat relate to his struggles?) Kyoko (Just, yes.) Makoto (Protag.) Celeste (Love her design, love the simple motive, hate what she said about Taka) Mondo (I'm sorry, but the butter jokes... made his character even more loveable for me!) I feel people say Makoto is a weak protagonist due to the comparison to other DR games whose protags go through more significant growth/issues. DR1 has some pasing issues which affected Makoto as well, but I do agree with you that he is a good protagonist, definitely much better than the protag of DR2 imo. He had a great journey and grew as a person.

I definitely respect and agree with your opinions on a lot of these characters, but I feel one I can’t really get over is you seemingly completely forgiving, if not praising Celeste’s actions, all because of knowing about her little fantasy lifestyle. I know opinions are opinions, but I don’t know, that’s just never sat right with me (maybe because I could really never tell if you were joking or not)

The Junko with the Monokuma hair tie is the real Junko. The Junko with the rabbit hair tie and ribbom is Mukuro.

Hey calvin, i dont mean to offend you, this is just my curiosity speaking but, didnt it bother you on a personal level that junko, the mastermind, was someone who enjoyed murdering people? personally i think genocide Jill, was about as funny as junko, dont Get me wrong, i do love junko as a villain, but she still, manipulated her classmates to kill eacother, and personally murdered her own sister, just for the pleasure, yes genocide Jill, was Also a murderer, but we never saw her murder someone personally, nor was she nearly as manipulative

Honestly I hate celeste more then hifumi. She literally told him that taka "took photos" and just talked shit about the *ULTIMATE MORAL COMPASS* in general. Hifumi thought he was doing the right thing. He thought he was defending her...😕 still don't really like him but y'now

Makoto is largely agreed upon to be the worst protag of all the games but I guess it doesn’t mean that he’s bad per se but just overshadowed immensely. Respect your opinion nonetheless.
