Fun Fact: According to Dorothy Fahn, Tsumugi’s VA, the cast actually did not know who the mastermind was throughout the entirety of recording lines. Not even Dorothy herself knew she was the villain. You can kind of tell by how manic the voice sounds when gig is up compared to the more composed and soft-spoken voice she had throughout the game. I honestly think that this made her performance as Tsumugi all the better.

To be fair, Johnny Yong Bosch actually forgot that he voiced Hajime. In one of his panels, Johnny said that he didn't even remember voicing Hajime in SDR2. Apparently, the recording session for Hajime only lasted a few days and that it was all a blur to him which is really impressive considering he did such an outstanding job with his voice. A fan even had to go so far as to pull up his page and remind Johnny that he did in fact voice Hajime, So it kinda makes sense why Hajime sounds so different in V3 because Johnny just doesn't remember what he did when he first voiced him which is hilarious in retrospect. I guess it goes to show how much he gets into his character in the moment because he delivered so much emotion in Hajime's lines and really made me feel for him at the end of the SDR2. If you want to see, here's the panel where he talks about it and it's so interesting to hear his experience with the process: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3k3gyAF01WM.html

I just want to say, cause no one else points it out, that the reason for the Monokubs existance, was to show how long Danganrompa has gone on in V3's setting. Usually, when a series runs on forever, they establish new characters to keep it fresh. The Monokubs never really had a purpose, so I think in V3's setting, Team Danganrompa wanted there series to gain even more money, and extend on longer, to the point of adding the Monokubs. Its a further look into how fictional properties try there best to go on.

I always thought that this ending shows how much fiction can make us feel so many things. Even tho it's just fake, it can make us player laugh over jokes and cry over a death of a beloved character. And the meaning of this ending can be seen for every single fictional work we're watching or playing. I love the ending of V3 and I really appreciate that you made that good video to show how good that game actually is.
@ignightroad
@ignightroad 4 года назад
Seconded; I recall so many people in the fandom HATED the ending because of how 'meta' it was but I loved it BECAUSE of that reason. 'Danganronpa keeps happening because people keep enjoying it'. How are you going to hate something that you loved because it's speaking the truth? Even Shuichi's speech about how he felt something for every character, how every life and death mattered; that is a damn good way to end a series because it's all true.

I personally think the most interesting part about the ending is that it isn't really clear if it's true or not. My main reason for believing significant portions of the ending are lies is that the footage of Kaede, Shuichi, and Kaito auditioning for Danganronpa is almost certainly fake. In the prologue, Kaede and Shuichi express confusion at being located inside the school, and Kaede recalls being dragged into a car. This entirely contradicts the footage we see in case 6, where they willingly go to auditions and express desires to join the killing game. Now, the prologue itself could theoretically be the result of more implanted memories, but I don't think that's very likely, as those memories are immediately overwritten by the flashback light at the end of the prologue and never brought up again. It would have been entirely pointless to implant these students with the memories of being kidnapped only to erase them and never bring them up again, which suggests that those memories Kaede had in the prologue were, in fact, genuine. If that is the case, then the footage Tsumugi showed must be fake, which makes the authenticity of all the statements she makes during the ending doubtful. tl;dr: The footage of the Danganronpa auditions was most likely fake, so it's likely that other parts of the ending were also lies.
@RamFaceProductions
@RamFaceProductions 4 года назад
*CONSENT* I agree! More evidence that supports this claim is the flashback to the start of the game, just after having their new outfits given to them. They're in the gym with the Monokubs, and it shows all of the characters getting excited that they were picked to participate. However, in the actual scene from the prologue, they all seem confused and horrified by the prospect of a killing game, before being flashed back to their starting positions. Tsumugi told us that's how the Prologue went, but she lied - and we have proof of that.
@kyliecocoyama1426
@kyliecocoyama1426 4 года назад
If Tsumugi and the Danganronpa Team had the capabilities to make the Fake Audition tapes that would mean that their memories would've had to be erased and overwritten with these new names, identities and motivations, just to make these short videos, which would seem like too much work especially since there's no gurantee that Shuuchi would find out the truth about the world being fiction. One could argue that it could be Tsumugi cosplaying as Shuuichi, Kaede and Kaito, but we know that's impossible because of CosPox. I believe that the purpose of the prologue is to help reinforce the Hope's Peak narrative where their memories were wiped for their protection etc. It can also be explained as a blunder by the Monokubs as they are shown to be very unreliable with extremely important tasks, which even though it seems unlikely could also be a possibility. For a while, i guess i would've liked to think that the ending might be fake and that ambiguity always makes for interesting stories, but the way this series defied our expectations all while getting us to feel something, i think that there's no other choice but for the ending to be Everything Was Fiction.
@Dharengo
@Dharengo 4 года назад
I don’t see how it was ‘most likely’ fake. There’s no evidence that suggests this.
@RamFaceProductions
@RamFaceProductions 4 года назад
@@kyliecocoyama1426 I agree that the game itself is fiction, and that in that world Danganronpa is all fictional - but I don't buy that Tsumugi was being completely and totally honest. I think the trial was honest for the most part, but it was clearly meant to be ambiguous given that Shuichi raises the idea that she could've been lying at the very end of the game. I also personally believe that the CosPox was BS - a fictional part of her fictional character - since CosPox definitely does not exist outside of fiction. How would she have faked this? Probably some makeup applied at hyper speed, which isn't that hard to believe since she can change entire outfits and body types in a flash. (Ironically I'm saying a rash caused by cosplaying real people is less believable than hyper-speed changing costumes and body types.) Either way, it is very cool that the ending messed with the information it gave us, but I definitely think that those tapes were faked based on the information about the start of the game being lied about.
@RamFaceProductions
@RamFaceProductions 4 года назад
@@Dharengo Considering Tsumugi lied about how the start of the game went - what happened to everyone during the prologue - I think it's plausible that either her or her staff faked those tapes in order to sell the narrative she was selling. We can't forget our first memory of being pulled into a van as Kaede, during the real version of the prologue - that must have credence since it contradicts Tsumugi's story.

To me, I always though that the reason the killing game ends when there are two survivors is because in this universe the “Ultimate Lucky Student” is the “Ultimate Survivor” while the other survivor gets to become the “Mastermind” of the next game, with the show producers give the new “Mastermind” fake memories that they are masterminds of the show, but enough info to still be able to work behind the scenes, so even Tsumugi may have been another person who was originally a contestant, plus what else were they gonna do with the survivors of past games, they’d probably react the same as those in our ending. There's so much great meta and theming stuff going on, but at a simple level I really love how the twist parallels and contrasts with 2. In 2, the reveal that everything was a game ended up being a relief, with a world still spinning outside and a chance to help those thought dead. V3 turns that on its head, managing to create a society so fucked up that it's actually even more despair-inducing than the idea of a destroyed planet. Also I'm shocked you never even mentioned the in-game equivalent of Twitch chat meming it up about Shuichi's nose while our remaining students contemplate suicide. That ridiculous flavor of black humor is peak Danganronpa.

In the Movie "Gamer" society is pretty similar to that, only a bit more extreme. Basically, a billionaire made a system where people could pay to use other people as avatars, while the people that are used get paid for it( its actually called Society if i remember correctly), while death row inmates are forced to be the playercharacters for people in a pseudo VR-FPS. This all works by some sort of Neuraltransmitter and the inmates automatically do the movements that are being input. You can escape the game by surviving i think 25 Missions and one player named Cable is really close to it. But the billionaire artifficially increasses the ping between player and character in hope that cable dies. Its later shown that his wife has to sell herself to Society and the billionair is planning to use their daughter as the first generation of child avatars. Personally, the ending was a whole roller coaster of emotions for me. I went from "..I AM a terrible person, why am I enjoying this series about kids murdering each other" to "No wait I'm fine, it wasn't about the killings, it was about overcoming trials, finding and fighting for those glimmers of hope, that's a good moral." to "No, that's stupid, I AM evil, even with the expectation of a happy ending, I could get that kind of moral message from a Nintendo game, I'm enjoying this because of the extremes it takes the characters in, I'll never play a Danganronpa game again." And then the game moved forward because I refused to play it. Danganronpa V3 played me like a fiddle, and I have mad respect for that.

I feel like a lot of people who've had the "you don't get it" argument thrown at them are taking it the wrong way. It's not that they're too dumb to understand, it's that they were so blinded by the anger from thinking the ending was about them, they ignored what it was actually trying to say. The whole point is that fiction is important. It doesn't matter that it's fake, it was still able to provide a meaningful experience that left an impression on you. I love how the game's final dark twist is hidden at the beginning of the prologue, SO far back that you'll probably have forgotten about it by the time you realize its significance. Everything that happens prior to the first flashback light is the real truth, because no one was supposed to remember it. It's the only time we see the characters' true personalities- and while they are different, they're more alike than we were told at the end. One of my favorite touches that actually enhances repeat playthroughs of this game for me (a severe rarity for visual novels) is knowing how Tsumugi is the mastermind and writer of the game's plot, and by extension, the host. You noted the Xenoblade X reference she makes in chapter 1, but there's all kinds of stuff like that throughout the game: Monokuma dressed up as Jibanyan, Tsumugi referencing various anime like Death Note and Sailor Moon. Most people would probably make that out to just be pop culture references for the sake of it, but I like to think of it as Tsumugi attempting to broaden appeal and be hip with the kiddies. It always seems like she's directly addressing the player/audience specifically when she does it too. Just a thought.

I mean that'd be kind of like saying the Truman Show was attacking its audience. Kind of why they made the reference with the giant dome representing the 4th wall that gets broken at the end. The fictional audience is the one that knows perfectly well that there are real, flesh and blood human beings trapped in a fictionalized world without their knowledge or permission and they continue to do nothing but spectate and support it, only slightly less amoral than the showrunners that are totally remorseless about their inherent cruelty and manipulation of their cash cows. However, the showrunners are ultimately subservient to the audience, so when the audience starts cheering for the subjects to escape, it's already all over. The fictional audience may be analogous to the real audience, but they're very different entities.

In Shuichi's lab, there's 53 pictures, and only the first 3 have dangan styled characters, the rest look like real people. There's a bunch of stuff like that which makes me despise people who just say "I hate the ending, there's no thought, it comes out of nowhere and it ruins the whole point of the game." No, there is so much built around the theme of lies and disappointment, so much so that it's built around the characters' backstories: Shuichi is a detective that didn't do anything Kaito is an astronaut that never went to space Himiko is so disillusioned about herself that she believes in magic Miu is an inventor that builds pointless machines (I'm interpreting it as a "Rick and Morty" dillema, as she could build mind-blowing stuff but decides to not do that) Kokichi's whole character Kiyo's persona Tenko's insecurities coming out as insulting men Maki's whole character Rantaro's motivations (past game was also a lie if we are to believe the ending) Angie's delusions about basically making a cult There's probably something to say about the rest but you get the idea. The explanation to understand: In the V3 universe the main cast are Ultimate real fiction, while the hope's peak cast is just fiction. Kaede was a REAL person with fictional memories implanted on her. So she existed Phisically in their real world, but her habilities, talent,memories of the outside world, family memories were all fake. Meanwhile the hope's Peak characters are just characters of an anime/videogame in their world, they dont exist Phisically. So Tsumugi cant cosplay as Kaede because Kaede is a real person.
@shinnemort4271
@shinnemort4271 4 года назад
@@bandicootsmwcentral2950 this is probably even more likely looking at the audition clips. during those, Tsumugi has to change Shuichi's name and Personality to pretend to be him without getting cospox, to the extent that the person in the clip isnt Shuichi Saihara but a fictional Character who looks like him. basically, We see in the Prologue that Shuichi's name before entering the game is "Shuichi Saihara", which implies that "Shuichi Saihara" is a real person. therefore, in order to cosplay as him for the Audition clips, she changes the name to random gibberish and uses a new personality as a Psychotic Otaku. at that point, it's possible to say that the "Shuichi Saihara who has the personality we've seen", and the "Psychotic Otaku with a gibberish name" are completely different people, and since the "Psychotic Otaku with a gibberish name" isnt real, Tsumugi can cosplay as him, even though he looks like "Shuichi Sahara" it's like how Tsumugi could probably cosplay Han Solo despite looking exactly like Harrison Ford, since "Han Solo" is a completely different fictional person from "Harrison Ford", who is real, despite looking the exact same. Tsumugi could probably cosplay as Han Solo and make people think she's Harrison Ford, but she could not cosplay as Harrison ford directly since he is real. this is just a theory though, but it makes sense.
@paulbutkovich6103
@paulbutkovich6103 3 года назад
My theory is that Tsumugi was lying about cospox from the very start. She only pretended to have it so that all the trials wouldn't be endless discussions of whether people were actually people or Tsumugi in cosplay. In a world that can make Exisals and flashback lights it is not too far to think that they can fake allergic reactions. Thus the Hope's Peak stuff may or may not have been fictional, as Shuichi points out at the end.

Mike Rueffer (Spoilers, assuming other readers have played V3 in it’s entirety) The “Kaede has a twin” reveal was solely for the benefit of the 3rd trial resurrection motive. Like if this was an actual reality show, how would you go about resurrecting a dead person in that case? Get a very convincing body double. Maybe they banked on the fact that Kaede would be the most popular character so they cast twins in the case of bringing back the fan favorite. It’s not something that is explained to you outright but you can intuit it looking at the whole killing game as a reality tv show. The true mesage for me of this ending is "Yeah, it's all fictional, not all of this really happened, just in the imagination of the players/creators. So, what? Just because this, don't you feel sad for the death of your favorite characters more? Neither feel happy with the interactions of your favorite characters, or feel the emotion of the plot twists? Because, well, you all already know that was 'just fiction' since the very beggining of the franchise, now that the characthers theirselfs now that too, all your feelings don't exist anymore?" At the end, the final phrase at Keebo's Argument Armament is very much real, even in our world: fiction CAN change the world. If not, all the books, movies, mangás, novels, etc. would have ended much time ago! Danganronpa V3 was just afirming that, it's not because it's fiction that don't matter; your feelings watching, reading, playing, anyway, *living* that story already changed you and all who does the same.

@@svensei5643 he IS dumb. Makes you think that he is the Danganronpa equivalent of Tarzan, only with even less education. But it makes him mentally basically a small child and he killed the poor girl because gremlin manipulated him into it or to protect gremlin (gremlin would have been unable to do anything if poor girl even touched him, meaning she could have done anything she wanted with him). And the whole reason why the trial went on for so long was because he had basically amnesia of what happend during the murder due to his own stupidity. Had he remembered everything, i'm sure he would have confessed it all easily or he would have been found out easily due to him not being able to tell a good lie or even detect a lie on his own. It was the only way in the story to make it the trial go as long as it did because the only way gonta woundnt have revealed himself as the killer would have been to not remember killing someone in the first place.

@@marcjehle2480 This guy gets it. Gonta's English VA knocked it out of the park, his crying and generally falling apart emotionally is completely heartbreaking. What makes it so hard to watch is that he never really understands what happened, but he accepts that he has to die anyway because in that moment it is the right thing to do. He doesn't even really defend himself, because he he trusts in his friends and knows they're smarter than he is, so he just believes them despite himself.

V3 ending is awesome, it impact me for days, was too real, too perfect, a truly META ending, unexpected, the "No more hope" part was awesome, the end of the game, the serie, its just too good. I mean, i know, i will miss the series, i will never find a game on the genere so interesting and fun to play, especially the class trials, no other games have something close to it, and that makes me sad, but, i cannot deny, the ending, is great. This video just touch my nostalgia, and my love and the feeling of missing this punch spin of the genre, but yeah, V3 is great. But, the series can still come back, i mean, there are other 51 danganronpa games before V3

Ones where youtubers do deep dives into their favourite things, their passions, and talk about them with so much vigour. Glad to know that the few of us who liked the twist appreciated it for going against expectations and not just playing it safe which happens all to often. It’s like they could’ve just made countless sequels like they poke fun off but instead they wanted to give the genre something new can definitely appreciate it for that. Good stuff.

Hey Ramzaes, just finished up V3 and I just wanted to say thank you. I ran across your channel a few months back, and since then I've played through the entirety of the Danganronpa series including Ultra Despair Girls and watched all of the animes. Prior to your videos I'd only heard of Danganronpa in passing and had no idea what it was and really didn't give a shit to learn about it. Today though, I can pretty easily say that this is my favorite game series and that I'm apparently way into hybrid visual novel games. I may not have realized this without you, so thank you so much. I'm probably going to pick up AI at some point soon and for the first time look into the Phoenix Wright series. I'm pretty hype. :)

I'll admit my opinion of the game did an immediate 180 when I first saw the ending. I enjoyed it all up to that point, but then the idea of throwing everything that was built up to that point aside to deliver a meta commentary about the playerbase (at least, that's how I still see it as being a commentary of) left a harshly bitter taste in my mouth. I knew a meta twist was coming, but I didn't expect, nor enjoy, the meta of it becoming so self-aware that it turned into fighting against ourselves. I didn't think too deeply of it at the time (due to being angry at how nonchalantly it threw all the previous canon aside), but with 3 years of hindsight I wonder if it might've been one last little ploy in the Hope/Despair theming; in that finally we, as the player, were the ones feeling despair at what the game was doing to us. In that regard some of the theming in the ending regarding the audience leaving and giving up on the show rings true. ...But even so, I can't bring myself to still like V3. It was the best when it came to presentation and characterization, but the ending pulling the rug out of absolutely everything in the franchise was, and still is, too much for me to look back on it favorably.

Repudiator BIG SAME. I was in the fandom before the first game even got a western release, so the idea of a THIRD game was so incredibly exciting. I was ecstatic about V3 leading up to its release. I was so psyched and ready to play it . . . but the ending felt like a huge slap in the face. My disappointment started when the leaks came out a week prior to the Japanese release of the game and it only went downhill from there for me. I felt like making the events of the first two games fiction within fiction really cheapened them. I had gone through my teen years loving those characters dearly. To learn that their struggles for freedom and hope had not actually occurred at all left a really bad taste in my mouth. I know it seems silly to feel that way because of COURSE they didn’t *actually* happen, they’re literally video game characters. But making it so within their own universe their stories weren’t even real made me feel hollow about the prior games. After this video I might give V3 a shot, but that ending still really deters me.

It’s a stupid ending. It’s not deep. It’s grasping at straws for a more ridiculous plot twist. It’s the one upping that they were trying to mock with the Monokubs and it being danganronpa 53. They did exactly what they were trying to poke fun at and it was just dumb. I get it, it just didn’t really add anything to the franchise tbh.
