I was always taught to leave 1/4 inch of plug out of the hole and then light the end sticking out on fire. It melts the plug around the hole and helps to remove the access plug. No need for contact cement or trimming.

I actually built one into my first machine (MULE) and it worked well. However, part of the deal with this machine (Fugazi) was to keep it lighter and simpler so I opted not to carry or install the compressor.
Keep in mind, once you puncture that Co2 cartridge, no matter if you only used half of it, it will leak out and be empty in a day or two. There is no use the rest of it next time, unless next time is later the same day. That is my personal experience.
