Dead Space 3 is a perfect example of EA messing with a good thing.
All good things must come to an end. Sometimes a series just runs out of steam. In other cases, executive meddling gets in the way of a project and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Dead Space 3 is a case of the latter.
While it's not as bad as I was expecting due to its reputation, Dead Space 3 does fall short of the masterclasses of game design that were the first two titles.

Looking to reach a larger audience, several compromises were made to the formula. Horror was dialed back, and action was dialed up. Coop was integrated into Dead Space 3.
Dead Space 3 also suffered from being one of the first major big-budget single-player titles with microtransactions. The end result ends up being a compromised title - design decisions that conflict with the foundation of what Dead Space is.
There's still plenty that's great here in Dead Space 3, as Visceral was a very talented team. They were making the most of a bad situation. It's a cliche, but it's one of the many examples of EA getting in its own way of its own products. In trying to squeeze out more money from customers, they ended up losing in the long run.
This Dead Space 3 review/analysis/retrospective/critique will look at the changes in Dead Space 3, coop, single-player microtransactions, the death of the series (for a time) and the death of Visceral studios.

Every single bad game review I've ever heard went something to the affect of "the devs had this amazing idea that worked really well, but then the big game company said to make it more approachable to a larger audience " never ceases to amaze that year after year they make the same mistakes and suffer the same faults

at this time, i think all horror games were adding action to compete with call of duty’s audience. that’s why most games at this time that were horror had a “identity crisis”.

It’s only a fault if the goal is to make a fun game. The accountants who run most studios don’t care about quality, they care about units sold and retention and monetization of players. For them a good game is one that is just fun enough to keep the player going, and just frustrating enough to keep them paying

The Co-op moment of 19:45 was flawless and the grenade launcher hit was the icing on the cake! Shameful display how the graceful series(and not just this series) has fallen all due to money. Money is the thing that makes beautiful corrupted, perverted from their original purpose to something unrecognisable from the original. In the end, games(there is always exceptions) have become nothing when they actually appear as Something. No soul, no love.

While I am fucking INCREDIBLY sad this was the end of the series, I’ve always liked that the ending of the dlc is how the series “ended”. Despite the attempts by the characters to beat it back, all is eventually left… as nothing but Dead Space. It’s something that’s always stuck with me as a showing as to how truly powerful the necromorph moons are I doubt I’ll support the series again unless it’s REALLY good but I’d love to see a game that covers a post DS3 universe. Maybe working with the original ds4 idea and scavenging what’s left in a truly dead space.

I wholly agree with the co-op side missions. I'll always remember playing online co-op with a friend, and he was Carver. I'm taking point, and we're doing fairly well, mowing down Necromorphs because of the broken upgrade system, and they make the comment; "What's up with all these nutcrackers?". Literally had me flabbergasted, because all I could see was viscera and frozen over coffins. Great way to completely blow me away, though sadly, that was one of the few times it happened during Dead Space 3. Good in co-op, but singleplayer is a lot of trouble for very little.

Just finished played 1-3 and i have to say that 1-2 really brings out the horror and 3 is more of an action packed game. What makes Dead Space a true classic horror game is the isolation and feeling of dread as Isaac progress into the game. Navigating Ishimura is the horror fuel.

Dead Space 2 hit the sweet spot. It had a brilliant mix of Horror and Action set pieces. If Dead Space was Alien, Dead Space 2 was Aliens. 3 though went full Action and the result just felt wrong.

The reason there is a DS1 remake is even more cynical than you can imagine, same reason why sony is remaking the last of us 1, because the resident evil 2 remake proved that horror action game fans are interested in reimaginations of older horror titles. Of course, RE2 came out in '98, a fucking decade before dead space, hence why EA is being dumb here, they simply dont get why it was successful.
@andu1854

I liked the remake better than the first one, but that is like saying my 97 was better than your 96, and the graphics just made it a better experience for me, even though they need to but a “throw a punch, stomp” action button to get zombies off of you, but I thought it was a great game, but being able to see way more detailed characters was sweet… and I think Code Veronica is what I think they should remake, make the Steve And Jill story better with better dialogue,

As somebody who recently covered all the Dead Space games myself, I feel like for everything Dead Space 3 did wrong (especially in the narrative), it redeemed itself in other areas, especially the expansion of the lore and introduction of the Brethren Moons. The co-op is weak, but for a feature that was mandated by EA, they at least tried to do something unique. I hate playing this game, but I’m very happy that it exists, and I still hold some hope for a Dead Space 4. I’m also very glad to see that I wasn’t the only one who saw the parallels between Mass Effect and Dead Space. I wasn’t aware that they shared a writer, but that makes a lot of sense.

I really liked the weapons system, I think it's underrated. It made some classic modules useful like the force gun and introduced some very interesting tools and combinations. Shame they put plain assault rifles, shotguns and rocket launchers as meta because the engineering tools arsenal could have become iconic. Great vid, stone hit.

Ellie not only seemed to have way more personality in Dead Space 2, her character model looked much better too, even though the graphics "weren't as good" Just, quite odd. Almost makes me wonder if they originally had a character model made with 1 eye and some EA exec came along late in development and told them to change it, and so they threw together a rough nu-Ellie.

Personally, I do feel that Isaac's personal journey had wrapped up by the end of DS2, so by the time we got to DS3, it was like "Well, what's left to do with the character? Why, put him in a daytime soap love storyline, of course!" I mean, at this stage, he's been through everything else. Also, I kind of like the idea of discovering the secret origin of the Markers, and it kind of brings the Marker storyline from the previous games to a full circle. So, is Dead Space 3 a downgrade from its predecessors? Yes, sadly it is, but that in no way makes it a terrible game; it's not the best entry in the franchise, but it's still very playable.

The last chapters at the alien city, uncovering the purpose of the machine, learning more about the aliens was really interesting to me. If the whole game focused on that it would've been great. They could've introduced more alien necromorph types that would bring back the horror and hopelessness as we desperately attempt to integrate some of the alien technology into our loadout to even stand a chance. The coop could've been pulled off as well, imagine a necromorph type that could only be killed in a specific way that requires both players to work as a team, more aggressive and more necromorphs, or even separating the players in different areas. In order for a horror game to feel scary, the difficulty needs to be high as well. What's the point of all the death animations if you never die. One of it's biggest problems was it was just too easy and there wasn't a difficulty scaling for the coop compared to the singleplayer. The plot moved too fast and made no sense, the rare times when the game would slow down were it's best moments really

DS3 was one of my first games I picked up for the ps3 when it came out and I was just starting my gaming addiction, it got my attention and I played through it several times because I believed it was _The_ Dead space horror masterpiece, I played through it several times... Then I recently played through Deadspace 2 and I realize now just how much of a missed opportunity the whole game is. I think me and Boulderpunch think alike; there is so much interesting things about the planetside of DS3'S Tau Volauntis and the aliens and Brethren Moons, just the idea of fighting against a ceaseless blizzard while hearing countless chilling screeches within the freezing black void... what monstrosity could be underneath the ice you're on... gets me excited with goosebumps! Here's hoping Dead Space 2022(?) can revive this amazing series...

Most underrated Dead Space imo. I think the start is iffy but getting on the frozen planet was just so much fun. The feeders were a great new necromoprh alongside the aliens. My only issues were the main villain and Norton being a bland stereotype. I would have preferred him to be an actual nice guy and deceive us a little instead of being a scumbag the whole time. Dead space main villains get killed off in the most disappointing ways sometimes.

Let me asked you this. How would you feel if your girlfriends ex was only on the mission to get her? Issac was only there for her, he said it himself. He even tried telling her that on the way into the nexus. Loads of people miss this. Both issac and ellie were marker effected after their experience in 2 (ellie after 2). And them getting together isnt strange or uncommon with people who had been through traumatic events. The thing that speretaes them is this. Issac had enough. He wanted f all to do with any of it. Where as ellie was still suffering from her inability to save her team in 2 which is why she left issac. It wasnt because she didnt love him, but he was withdrawing into himself and she needed to act. Norton wasn't an after thought for ellie either but you can imagine how he feels being stuck in the middle. I mean he only wanted to save ellie as well and his crew, issac wasnt there to save the world. They werent that much different. I think people hate the whole love triangle thing (which it isnt a love triangle) because it shows a human side to their hero. Issac is in love, mental and all over the place, he was at odds with Norton once he found out he was with her. People can look at it however they want, me? I look at it as humanity and our nature shining through even in the very midst of destruction, but what are they fighting for after all? Which is why carver handed over the codes to danik at the end. I agree it's very much underrated. Dead space in one of only a few sci fi franchises that I'm really into, and all of the games give their message in a different way, and out of all 3 is just my fav. Love it.

I really hope they continue the story. I don't know about what the plans for 4 were but I figure the fourth game will probably be some desperate race to scrape up the resources to create a hidden sanctuary for humanity or send out a stealth sleeper ship beyond Necromorph controlled space in hopes of rebuilding because baring Deus ex machina I don't think we have a snowball's chance in hell of stopping them.

If not for the forced online co op and utter disgusting microtransactions/pay to win mechanics? Dead Space 3 could've been great. I had no problem with the introduction of human enemies in this game. Necromorphs were still the main cannon fodder and it was neat to have 3 way battles between them, the Unitologists, and Isaac. Plus like the necromorphs, the excellent gore/dismemberment system applied to human enemies as well. Sucks we never got a proper Dead Space 4. EA is still one of the worst game companies out there. Though to be fair, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, WB Games, CDPR, etc give them a run for the golden poop awards.

Meh, feels like having the heroes defeat the cosmic horror would be far more of a cop out, when the whole point of the horror in those cases is the insignificance of man against the greater unknown. Some battles can't be won and it's fine to acknowledge that and write stories in that vain. I'm not really a fan of Dead Space 3, but it's ending is pretty much in line with the theme and atmosphere of the series. Dead Space was never a story of a hopefully future for mankind, so much of it's setting is incredibly bleak. The "happiest" you were probably going to get was our main characters barely surviving while everyone else dies, just like how the last two games ended.

I finally played this recently on Gamepass. This was much much better than I expected. Retrospectively it seems highly underrated. And the usual complaints of the horror missing is false. This game has a good mix of horror parts similar to the first two games. Then yes it does crank up the action in other parts. But as whole I think it holds together quite well and is a solid experience. The weapon crafting is better than it is in many shooter games of recent years. I thought the story was decent also.

Some things I wanted to say. 1)I nevern understood this microtransactions thing. I got everything fine just by playing the game. You get resources and the mini robots can be uploaded in so many places to gather stuff. 2)Making any weapon combination was awesome. 3)The boob job was amazing. Every guy that reviews the game always notices that. Clever tactic from the developers! 4)This was the first ever game that I watched a full Let's Play! 5)We finally saw Aliens which I was always interested why we never saw them while it was established that Humans have colonized so many places in like 400 years. 6)The tech seems to not advance at all though since the intro is 200 years before the present yet everything is exactly the same! Talk about stasis! 7)The cliffhanger with the DLC was so good but man so frustrating that it never got resolved. No comics or movies too I believe resolved it. 8)The game sells like 3 milions copies but that is bad. Classic evil corporation. 9)Apparently the alien machine that stops the big bad enemies is like 2 milion years old. Talking about good tech!

We realized it was a pay-to-win halfassed coop with almost no scares and COD mechanics about 20 minutes in and went back to Borderlands 2 in protest. Glen Schofield was our Shinji Mikami, but he's now a leader in the downfall of many franchises and game studios.

i think that if the plot/characterization had been better, i wouldn't have missed the horror so much. it just felt like a mediocre b action movie with silly writing and unnecessary changes to ellie's characterization in particular

I personally think it's a very good conclusion to the series. I believe that no game franchise should exist in more than three main installments, it becomes stale and boring. I was scared shitless by the first game; was awed by the atmosphere and got my payback in part two; and finally had some most amazing time playing through the whole third game once with my friend, once with my wife and once solo over the years -- not as scary sure, but just as fun. Yeah, I wish shooting/aiming would be as tactical as in previous games, but even like that it's a good game. Every single volume felt new and compelling with logical evolution of the characters and gameplay. I have no regrets about anything and nowadays waiting and holding my breath for Calisto Protocol. And it is exactly so exciting because it's a completely new franchise from the same genius mind of Glen Schofield so it's got to be fresh & extra scary again.

Wait the opening cinematic is from 200 YEARS prior to the event of the game?? I never realized that I thought it was like months or maybe a year or so ago, did I miss something apart from the date at the start I thought it was the current year for the entire game or so

1) In the end the mtx economy limits your way to experiment with weapons but you can still do enough not to feel so limited. But timers are my most hated game mechanic, made to annoy players and mobile wise aimed even to continously reopen the game every day if you don't pay. Even without money involved is a mess: in Dragon Age Inquisition you need to wait real hours to complete some tasks like upgrading your stronghold and so on, so you go to the maps to explore around in the meanwhile. If you don't want to do secondary quests you basically close everything and play the next day. Not surprising people on PC mod the game to remove those timers. In Dead Space 3 sometimes i wait for the timer to end to gather resources and work on upgrades instead to continuing. In older games if my HPs regen in a long time i wait not to waste my resources.. i'd rather tune gameplay to other things, not long wait times. 2) Yeah various elements in the story are worse than the average B movie trophes. I replayed the game multiple times more for the enviroments and the mysterious vibes but it's not easy to forget how dull some stuff is there. Like having to find a suit for the cold when you had no problem in the far more extreme temperatures of space :P 3) You can see the different approach to combat when you play the mode that forces you to use the classic weapons. The lack of options in the customization really make that mode the hardest thing in my opinion because monsters assault you even more. Without thinking about the survival element going out the window when you can reload any game chapter and re-harvest stuff over and over. 4) I recently read a novel called the Wanderer by Fritz Leiber about a moon coming to Earth and reminded me a lot of the ending of the DLC. A bit of a waste not seeing how the series would have gone.

I seriously hope with EA remaking Dead Space this will lead to them remaking 2 and 3 and fixing any issues with Dead Space 3…..Norton….. and finally giving us Dead Space 4. But no Ellie as main character, fuck that I don’t give a rats ass about Ellie. I either play as Issac or no dice

I still think they should make Ellie a playable character for the series finale (if they ever make it) and do a two play through game (one with Isaac and one with Ellie and play it as though Isaac is dealing with the Marker’s influence and all those issues bring and one as Ellie and how she would have no marker affect, What do I know, but Ellie is bad ass and it would be fun to kill necromorphs… For a bargain but, I didn’t hate this game, but the custom weapons wasn’t as cool as just upgrading with power nodes… and I think Ellie should have been the playable character instead of Carver

While I do agree with the older weapon system in DS1 and DS2, they weren’t actually permanent choices. You could refund node placements with a small fee. Small misinformation, but the video speaks volumes otherwise. I hope this game gets remade and does things right this time ❤️

Just played it again with a friend on the impossible difficultly. As a coop it is way better then I remember. Well at least the first 60% of the game. Then some levels copy pasta of side missions is getting meh. And some setcion just annoying to get thro. Other then that we had a blast on that difficulty. Would buy the remake with no hesitation for coop. The story, as a fan of 1 and 2 I was disappointed.

I forgot, the second half of the game gets more and more buggy, the sounds, the cutscenes, the twitching bodies, it’s bad and it was getting worst and worst after the first half.

To be honest I've played the whole trilogy and it was a lot of fun. All of it. Including Dead Space 3. I wonder if Dead Space Remake will sell well, will devs remake Dead Space 2 and completely redo Dead Space 3? Like it was never there in the first place? And of course delisting all the originals from digital storefronts.

I am this moment playing dead space 3 on pc. It's weird in part 1 the flamethrower slows game for 1 second upon contact and same for the enemies who drag the yellow exploding sack. Dead space 3 this my second play through first was 2013. I just recently done my dead space game again. After enjoying 1 and 2 we now on 3. Loads of enemies one scene trapped the skeleton like enemies hitting me all directions gun and alot of times you have to shoot ripper 3 times before leg comes off making enemies crawl at super speed and bullets doing nowt lol. Another problem is the crafting sometimes the laser so narrow you wonder if hitting them. The twitchers took loads of bullets to kill. Optional missions give you massive amounts of enemies and your praying you don't restart again. It went from remove limbs game to hope i can kill everything in front of me. If motive had to start on remake they should have just done 3. It's a hard game and lacks the enjoyment 1 and 2 had when playing now its become a battle lol. Weapon fully maxed out and its emptying entire weapons and not doing anything the music stops and you realise battle over lol. It's making me look forward to remake so that when comes out i am back to being in control again and doing what game about dismemberment. The flying scenes at Start were great but no worry of oxygen going. As people said i just hope ea was to blame and dead space 3 team said no we want game this way but ea said no you will have huge amounts of enemies on screen hitting player known stop that don't seem to die. Glad callisto protocol wil be how we expect it to be looks amazing i tell thee.

Tbh with the bits we know about DeadSpace4, it sounds like the series was heading into a weird direction nonetheless. Btw I hate it when they swap out the main character in a sequel ➡️ it's like playing Metroid without Samus (you can pull this bs in some weird spin-off)

I actually really dig the non-linear style, imagine fighting and running through the tight corridors and large halls of an abandoned station being hunted down by horde of necromorphs, like in the game Dying Light.

This is the only Dead Space I played growing up. I remember getting it because it wasn’t scary and I was too afraid at the time to play the others. I liked it and I completed it on single player, but felt like Gears and Uncharted at the time.

When I tried to play it as a typical Dead Space game, it was totally unfun. When I played it as a sci-fi third person shooter with all the DLC pirated, it was OK. All in all, I agree with your first statement that it wasn't as bad as I heard it to be, but it still isn't as good as 1 and 2.

I may end up buy the Dead Space remake used out of curiosity, but I'm certainly not buying it new. EA doesn't deserve to be rewarded for killing off Visceral and giving us a pointless remake instead of a true sequel. Even if they wanted to mandate a remake, why kill off Visceral (the very people who fucking made it!) and give it to some other studio who has no prior experience with it?
