Welcome to Episode ONE of my Custom Card reviews! Each week I will be looking at the top 10 most upvoted card over on / customhearthstone and giving my feedback on each one.
This series is of course heavily (heavily) inspired by @TrumpSC series in which he did the same thing, but I asked for and was granted his permission. I always loved hearing the Mayor of Value towns feedback on my cards I posted on reddit back in the day, so I thought it was only right to carry on the legacy and pass some of my own wisdom down!

Thanks for stopping by! If you’ve got the time I’d highly recommend making some cards and posting them over on www.reddit.com/r/customhearthstone/s/pQx5vXsi5f I’d love to see what you come up with! Also sorry the audio here is a little less than ideal, just gotta figure out some things better with my set up. Definitely try to have a better quality for the future.

I wanna see more! It’s a great inbetween thingy, as you also design your own custom cards! (Also, having an eye for balance definitely should be good! Like, the HS team should appreciate that, if that’s still your goal, to be a designer for a HS)

Glad to hear it! And yah this series is meant to really fill out the schedule between my big projects. Make sure I’m uploading at least once a week haha. Hoping to pass on any knowledge I can and also hopefully learn somethings myself!

This was a great video! The production design was top tier (like the animated background was really cool, and all the little sound effects!). I really like this type of content, and I'll definitely be trying to make it on the list with one of my own cards :P I hope more people see this video, and hope to see more content like this in the future!

Ul'thk could easily have a few unique secrets that have one of some number of conditions to summon it back to avoid the "Constantly having to update Ul'thk" problem. And maybe a minor reward? like: "When your opponent casts a spell, deal 1 damage to all minions and summon Ul'thk." "When your opponent plays a minion, summon two 1/1 elementals and Ul'thk." "When your opponent plays 3 cards in a turn, draw a card and play Ul'thk" etc.

A good fix for Ul'thk would be to have it resummon itself *alongside" the activation of the effect of whatever secret it gives you, instead of replacing the effect outright

Test of faith is broken with any healing does damage effect. That’s 17 damage for 3 mana at least.

volatile skelemancy could have easily been runeless but i wonder if this is a means of future proofing it against triple blood dks who would use this over reno. you basically get a thassaurian every turn for 2 mana

For Phlebotomy you could make it a random spell to reduce power level

Test of faith would be very strong in an Auchenai deck. 2 mana deal 17 damage. Double Test of Faith plus the Battlecry Auchenai (I wild), is a 6 mana deal 34 damage combo. The card is balanced (kinda weak as a 2 mana kill a 5hp or less target or 2 mana heal 7) when you can't deal damage from healing but is busted as soon as you can... Whether it's actually too busted for wild... I don't actually know cos I think games can end by like turn 4 already, but if theres a cheap way to reduce the spells cost even by 1, it is turn 4 lethal if you have the cards.

Yah missed that interaction with Auchenai and other affects like it. Probably wouldn't be good to print it as it is, but I think it is still a cool start to a design!

@@bionicdoor I think a watered down version could be cool. 1 mana deal 2, if it lives heal 7. It makes it either a 2 damage ping, a 5 health heal or a 9 damage inverted heal (which is pretty strong but you'd have to actually build a stronger combo to lethal with it rather than just 3 cards)

Test of Faith should have been a 1 star for balance. Just think of a card like Embrace the shadow or Shadowtouched Kvaldir (your healing effects deal damage instead). Love the video though

Test of faith is spooky with effects that convert healing into damage. Image doing 34 damage for 4 mana with a little assistance

Test of faith can deal 17 damage to face if you play a card that changes healing into damage

Ul'thk actually doesn't seem too complicated to implement, reminds me of Halkias. Honestly could be like 5 mana and doesn't affect the secret reward at all, it just also summons him when triggered. And Deaf Knight has to be DK cause of the Silence Priest spell

I'd say its in line with a card like Blood Treant, provides a really strong start but at the big cost of putting your Mana a turn behind your opponent. I don't necessarily disagree with you though, the card could maybe be a 1/1 and still be fine. But I don't think it is that crazy

Phlebotomy isn't imbalanced at all. Death knight doesn't have blood rune spells (that card has 3 blood runes) that will be very strong if played on turn 2.

It’s more of the fact that this kind of card would prevent them from ever printing any high Cost Blood Rune spells. Remember that you can still run 1 and 2 Blood Rune Cards in a triple blood deck. The card just really limits Blood DK design a lot.

Ul'thk has a very easy fix. Deathrattle: Turn into a secret. And the special secret has the different effects that you'd gain from changing the reward of current secrets. You'd also be able to make only good secrets. (Ice Block lol)

Just checked it out, seems very cool! Lots of neat designs in there, I'd personally probably keep Beating Heart at 3 just cause at 2 mana it may be too easy to just play it on 2 and draw three, just my opinion there tho. I do really like your rebalanced Phlebotomy, definitely fixes the problems I had with it while actually making it pretty versatile. Well done!

A few redditors were convinced Beating Heart needed to go to two - and I saw the logic so I changed it for the collage but I think you're right, it's too good early at 2 Mana. One great suggestion I saw was to make it Tradeable so it wasn't a dead card below 10 Health.

Many of those custom cards have lots of interesting design ideas but stupidly unbalanced. Fun to look at it though. Also decent video but definitely need better microphone also how tf is volatile skelemancy is balanced, it definitely need to be a Hero card (not rarity, hero change card) and need to be at least 7 mana. Compare that with Metamorphosis' cost (4 mana 2 use) and summoning volatile skeleton with reborn is so much better than just dealing 4 damage. and test of faith too, it definitely need to lower it's damage/healing, currently it's pretty much 2 mana deal 5 damage to small minion/face heal 7 health

super nice series to start. maybe your rating is a bit too nice, i think you should give 4 stars in design for good designs and keep 5 stars for incredibly good !

Thanks! I’ll definitely have to figure it out as I go. I tried to give 5 star designs to any cards that had very flavorful and interesting effects that I thought were in line with cards that release.

also test of faith seems busted as a finisher but mind blast exists, making it holy really did skirt that line of being just okay enough
