What is interesting about these statistics is that they influence each other. For example, if a card is unbalanced, it ruins the Fun for other players. If a card isn't Flavorful enough, it hurts the Fun somewhat. If you can make a balanced card that is flavorful, it will most likely be Fun.
Btw, I think I want to mention that since Blizzard is not an indie company(despite the number of bugs), I’m pretty sure that the design team and balance team are completely separate, due to the sheer quantity of cards. As for the video itself, I do agree. This is basically also how I review custom cards for the past year or so.
Zilliax really is the best balanced card in the game’s history, strong without being oppressive, has mech synergy, and can be removed for a comparable cost
you should do an episode on parasitic designs. cards designed specifically for another card (see: tri rune death knight cards on r/customhearthstone and CNE). what kind of interesting design space for cards designed to synergize with other cards (plot twist) and the opposite (skulking gheist)
Im curious as to your opinion on why some cards seem to be published without play testing. Such as ones that are absurdly powerful when they are launched. Is it oversight or different expected use cases?
I truly believe all cards are play tested before they are released. Now as I mentioned Balance I think is a tricky thing, ensuring a card/archetype is competitively viable and also not obscenely broken is like attempting to hit a bullseye on a target. I think the Hearthstone team does a great job at consistently hitting around that bullseye which is incredibly impressive. And even when the dart misses, it’s usually because of overcompensating when a class is too weak for an extended period of time, which shows that dilemma of making sure all players can have Fun. That’s just my opinion on it though, I mainly see balance as this separate big final boss after initial design and because of that I don’t feel too qualified to give any real insight on it, but it’s fun to think about.
I agree with you that there are quite a few cards that if one number was slightly altered they waiver between busted and out of meta which is impressive. Thank you for your detailed response
Hey! I was thinking of making a Custom Warlock set and came across your video and thought the Soul Fragment idea was super cool and would like to expand upon it. I'm not the best at using editing software so I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the Soul Fragment design? Either way your videos are super inspiring to someone who newer to making custom Hearthstone cards!
I wouldn’t mind at all! Can’t send the Soul Shard assets rn but I should be able to tomorrow! Do you have a discord or somewhere you’d like me to message you them?
@@bionicdoor Yeah I have one. Its Masquerade 9750. Wanted to say thanks for doing this as it helps a TON and I hope that all your future projects turn out to be as awesome as all your others have!
echoes of the pantheon is a great idea for a quest reward, i feel like benedictus is fine for both classes without the 20 card restriction, to referernce back to frozen throne benedictus. i think a card that adds your opponents cards to your deck at start of game would be a neat renethal replacement
I disagree on the design of Timeloop Voyager. The point of it is to have all the "conditional battlecry" effects. Keywords also rarely keep the identity of their original set when they are reused, this is similar to the amalgam that has a bunch of triggers to summon a 1 cost. The fact that it just says "do it again" repeatedly is amazing flavor too.
I feel like for the funni Zeph to be balanced it'd need to be a discover where you see random 2 of the funny spells and the third is a "mystery option" similar to Vulpera Scoundrel. Choosing one out of 3 would make this a little too consistent for a 2 mana effect.
My thought was "Battlecry: If your deck has no duplicates, your opponent Discovers a very funny spell to cast" Maybe tweak it to be more like the suspicious Nathria cards, but the opponent interacting during your turn would be something that Hearthstone hasn't done before, like OG Zephrys
20:10 I believe the guy who made the card clarified in the comments that this Zephrys also has an algorithm that determines what the 'perfect' funny spell is, so if your hero is low health it would cast Tree of Life, for instance. Althought it's not stated in the card. Edit: Nevermind, I was misremembering, he only states that was his ORIGINAL idea but dropped it. The spell is indeed random.
Eh that’s a bad quest reward. I think he didn’t recall what powers titans have. Many of them would be simply board clears and discover. A 10 mana board clear with maybe 3 cards added to hand with a chance to be “free” isn’t that great. I think the duels treasure seems more appropriate Like getting warrior, dk, dh, mage, yogg, hunter, warlock as your 7 would really be pretty meh for 10 mana.
Maker of Wrap battle here. The card was kinda meant as a joke. I knew it wouldn't be made so I tagged it as humorous. I just thought it would be funny concept.
Hey maker of wrap battle. I would give the loser of duel Dormant for one turn. See Battlecry goes first then go dormant for one turn happens. So rogue cards aren't handicapped at all (if they lose its a soft handicap)but paladin cards, mage cards and even demon hunter cards all suffer.
Especially paladins taunt, lifesteal rush divine shield hahahah. Also I case U don't get it . Dormant is ment to resemble Wrapping paper to fit in whizbangs workshop. Edit number 3 oh the card that wins the duel doesn't get drawn?
Yah I think the effect fits both classes (tho I think it probably should remove the setting cost to 1 thing haha) Benedictus as a character is just very much a priest and not much of a rogue at all
@@bionicdoorBenedictus was a double agent for the void/deathwing. He was around a long time and then last patch of cataclysm he’s revealed as working with twilight’s hammer.
Hey y’all! Quick fix here, realized after finishing this that duh Benedictus has everything to do with Thief priest! Somehow his OG form passed my mind, still don’t think he fits rogue to well… Hope you all are enjoying the series and thanks so much for watching!
@@hoodfox6294Oh I did see this one! I really liked that one as well! Assuming it’s Mini is meant to resummon with the buffs gained from the first (as you intended) Design: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Balance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Love the design of the card, a cool different take on a Rattlegor like effect! My one thing for the Balance is I think it’s a little weak. It’s a big 10 Mana do nothing on the first half which I feel could be hard to play. I think it’s alright to bump the cost down a bit, or maybe even giving the card Taunt could help a lot. Love the card though, and mechanically it is very cool! Hope to see more of your cards on the subreddit!!!
Just found you through this series and am enjoying it. If you could id love it if you would describe what your rating system means, for example when you say 5 stars for balance... do you mean if this card was added to the current meta it would see play and not break the game? Or a more general, I think this balance is about right?
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the series! To answer your question a 5 Star in balance means I think it would be playable and not over powered or too weak. Anything lower means I think little adjustment maybe made to push it towards being in line with cards in the game.
Can we all agree that dumb rage is technically just lightbomb in most cases? Idk if the creator realised it but i don't think it shouldnt have 5* deseign.
It is very much just lightbomb but with a Warrior flair given. I think it fits the class and is funny enough to warrant at least 4 stars design, I gave it 5 cause I personally really appreciate the callback and love the twist they did with it
i think guntana would be fine if they just removed the keyword, they did that with phase stalker thyrm is a really interesting card considering marrowgar is leaving standard, and im honestly shocked you didnt mention him because marrowgar summoning doublle your corpse count can often end games on mere stats, especially if you do it onto just one board slot. lots of high level UUU dks use that strategy to go over the head of classes like druid. i think its fine as written, maybe should cost 9 mana also swiss army bot is miserable, being able to magnetic a wargear with windfury makes me want to print out and rip mechwarpers
I really like the first card, as you said it simple has too much going on and its quite powerfull, in my opinion there is two ways to change the design: Removing the tradeable or removing the magnetic, poison and make it a dragon for example. Modern Hearthstone 8cost minions need to be powerfull, but the tradeable makes it too consistent or the magnetic gives it a lot of finish potencial (which for a high cost card isnt that bad, but it just cant be both)
for Multiplying Mechaloc, another reason why Miniaturize doesn't fit is because, for all Miniaturize cards, their Mini versions remove the "Miniaturize" keyword for obvious reasons. So, following that logic, the mini version should say "Deathrattle: If this has 2 or more Attack,", which doesn't make sense at all
(Reworked) Thrym, Hope Ender: 10 Mana Triple Unholy Tune 0/0 Statline Text: Rush, Elusive, Reborn This minion’s stats are equal to the number of ALL minions that died this game. This rework makes it way more sticky. The only thing that could remove the threat of this is Shard of the Naaru as area silence is the easiest way to counter him. Elusive fixes interactions like Execute, Life Sentance, 90% of Priest Spells. The stat buff changes makes it so cards like the ragers don’t have absurdly high win rates even though they’re made to suck. This still has counter play as minion effects like Big Game Hunter or AOE spells like Twisting Nether but makes it much more worth it to run.
I can see MarkMcKz get a butt-ton of minions die in a game, then play Soulbound Ashtongue, then play Silas Darkmoon to send Soulbound Ashtongue to the opponent, and finally play Thrym, Hope Ender and attack the Soulbound Ashtongue for the OTK.
I think with Thrym he should be all undead minions that died and also be a 1/1 but theres still some of the issues you mentioned that remain. perhaps it could have lifesteal to help the idea of stat pile or gives alot of corpses or something like that.
I think Guntana should swap after you attack but it should start in katana form so you get rewarded for overkill. also I do see how it works with inspire because if you swap when you play it the katana will have the plus one attack.
