Delboy's Garage, 'How-To' lube and free-off stuck control cables.

After a few requests for info on how to replace slipping clutches, i thought it would be good to show how to determine if it actually is the clutch slipping, or if, like 9 times out of 10, its just a stuck and binding cable....and how to free them off to last another few years..! "why buy new when a good clean will do..lol"

I was gonna title the video.."Lubing your stiff cable"...but i thought that would be childish and smutty, and nobody would find that level of humor funny....but then i forgot that you watch the videos now..Doh..!... thanks for watching chap, its great to have made yer acquaintance, i see much rib kicking to come..muah ha ah..! P.S., ill need some help and advice with the mic for the GoPro in the new year buddy, ... have a happy holiday buddy, and ride safe in the snow. take care, Del & Penny..

What I did with mine was put it in a vise to hold it vertically. Put a chunk of shrink tube on the outer casing, only shrink the end where you want it sealed onto the casing. Then its like a funnel, filled it up with some deepy Creepy and let it soak. Same as your idea basically, just another method! I seen another video where He drilled a hole in a water bottle lid slightly smaller than the cable so when you stick it thru it seals. Then fill up the bottle with oil. And hang it. Same shit different pile! Cheers!!🍺🍺

Yes indeed was looking for a way to free up a blocked b & s mower throttle cable, to be sure ur cable is fully lubed keep working the oil/lubricant until u see it come out @ the opposite end,if u flood it continously u will flush out any gunk inside then continue til u get just oil/lube only .

Hi Joe, you're most welcome Sir, thanks for your kind comments, it's simple stuff and basically no more than housekeeping... but these days with the sense of foreboding that dealer's project, people are increasingly less willing to tamper with things they're not familiar with... it's usually nothing that difficult, jus familiarity with the parts!

Hey Mr Del Let me start by saying a most sincere thank you. You not only in still know-how, but you also give riders like myself the confidence to tackle those jobs that are essential to keeping our bikes on the road summer and winter. I had no idea about looking after my bandits brakes, or tensioning the chain, etc..., I have purchased myself a set of tools, at less than the price my dealer (motorcycle dealer, not the other type of dealer, you know what I mean) would charge me for the 15k service on my bike, and have systematically started working my way through all the things that service entails. With the help of Mr Haynes and to the most part your fantastic videos. The detail to attention and no nonsense approach to each task is most helpful, I am working my way through you back library of vids, each time discovering more little gems, that again give me the confidence to attempt yet another job on my bike. I will be tackling valve adjustment in the next few weeks, and if you have any vids in your library on this subject, I would very much love to see them or it. Don't stop the amazing support you give to all your fraternity of followers, in particular me, I would have already spent hundreds on the jobs I have needed to do to keep my bike running properly and safely this past winter. Here is to many years of safe motorcycling, All the best brother Andy

Moonfleet41 i have a GSF 650 SA bandit k6 on a 56 plate. it is abs model. i brought it last Oct and it has been well looked after by previous owners and i want to be able to keep looking after the bike in the same way, without hefty service bills! thanks for your very prompt response my friend. much appreciated. all the best Andy

Ok, as thats a later model motor, ive not been inside one of those, the earlier motors (oil cooled) had a locknut and adjuster setup... but im not sure if yours has shims... if they do, then you can adjust them, only replace the shims with the next size up...and that manes taking the cams out.... then re-timing the cams exactly, can you do this level of work yourself..?

Thanks dude this is a great idea!About to go try this... I flip lawn mowers and at least 60% of the time its just a sticking cable to fix them. They are cheap to replace but this is even better if i can get them usable. People let them sit out in the rain and water gets down there and they get bound up in like one or two seasons. Its pretty pathetic how crappy the cables are on these things. I replace miy personal mower cable every year or two but more because it snaps. There has to be a better way than these darn cables!

Del, I've not examined the comments in detail, so maybe someone has already said it, but here is a simpler way to create the fill-funnel (one that can be done with things most people already have at home): 1) Cut the corner from a plastic bag (a sandwich bag or baggy will work, although a thicker freezer bag is better). Begin cutting about 3 inches from the corner, and follow a semi-circular path, always about 3 inches from the corner, 2) Trim off just the very tip of the piece that you cut from your bag--no more than 3/16 of an inch or so. Now you have your funnel. 3) Slide the cable into the big end of the funnel and keep going until the metal bits are all the way through. 4) Wrap a rubber band ("elastic band" on your side of the pond) around the small end of the funnel to secure it tightly. 5) Fold the funnel inside-out so the big end is now above the open end of the cable. Bob's-your-uncle--now you have a leak-resistant, and disposable, funnel. Thanks for all you do, mate! Tom

My old XJ9 had a wee rubber gaiter over the clutch lever pivot to stop crap getting in the cable. It worked great and in the 30 or so years I owned that bike the clutch cable always felt great. I've just bought a new bike and one of the first mods I did to it was stick a wee gaiter over the clutch lever pivot the same as the XJ9 had. Good tips on how to clear a bunged up cable though Del :)

Loverly tutorial and humor, hand actions hmm :-) Just had that de-ja-vu moment, yesterday i told my frends young son the same thing. His cheap ajs generic motorbike seems a bit odd on the clutch, took a gorp and noticed the cable was dry as a bone. I told him to use plasticine to make the cup, i thought that method was forgotten lol :-) I said to chase the cable with wd40 first to push the water out, then 3-in-1 or similar to do the lasting lube. Happy xmas to you both :-)

Great video. Instead of that White Tack stuff, which I don't know really know what it is... I made the little funnel using a bit of my kid's modeling clay to get the WD40 in there, and it worked just fine... At least that part did. Turned out the cable was all frayed inside, and that's why it kept getting stuck, so I still have to replace the whole thing... But thanks for the idea

WD40 is, primarily, a solvent/cleaner not a lubricant. It might be best to clean the cable with WD40 as shown in your video and follow this up with some oil. Almost any oil would do (engine oil).

Had to do the same a couple of years ago. A friends speedo cable snapped on his er5, luckily I had an old cable lying around which had seized so bad the inner cable wouldn't come out...a good soak in WD40, did what you did and got the cable running like new. I also use GT85 as more of a cleaner/protectant. Yes it's great for freeing off rusted nuts, cables etc..What I find it excels at is cleaning chain lube(you'll know how messy that can get). Usually I spray it on the rear wheel then use a micro-fiber cloth to wipe the wheel clean, I find it also works great when cleaning the underside of the chain guard and around any area that's been splattered with chain lube. Only word of advice I'd give to anyone using GT85 is not to get it anywhere near any areas that require grease as it acts as a degreasing agent. I see this vids a couple of years old and have tried a couple of your methods including cleaning my brakes with hot soapy water. Saves a fortune on brake cleaning products.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Hi mate, good points on GT85...its great stuff....but has its down sides too.. one of the best things to clean a chain with is fresh cheap engine oil....then use a Scott oiler....but then that's really a winter riding solution..i guess im tuned to that at the moment as Autumn is round the corner and ill be making the prep-for-winter-riding videos soon... thanks for watching mate and take care... Del.
@Katana-qi8bn
@Katana-qi8bn 9 лет назад
Moonfleet41 no worries..its great to get some extra tips and advice :-) Been using a scot oiler for 4 years...2 years with the dual injector. I still occasionally give the chain a quick spray so that I'm not completely relying on the scot oiler. Dual injector is great though only thing I find is it sometimes gets blocked where the feed pipes sit against the sprocket. Keep up the good work and the Bandit is looking great :-)

love your videos the best, you explain it very well.I just bought a 1995 sporster custom,front and rear signal lights are there and wires are wrapped under seat from back signals,, could you describe briefly how to wire them correctly to the switch fronts were left the same way,wires were left at front of bike.,,
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Hi Again Lyndon, to describe this in any detail that makes sense would take paragraphs mate.....and i dont have years or practice wiring Harleys to be able to say "do this, this and that"...but as long as the loom has not been chopped about and butchered, then the indicators should plug into the bikes wiring harness at relevant points.. the back indicators usually plug in either under the back fender, or seat, and if not then trace forward looking for a plug that looks like it fits the plug on the indicator....this kind of job is about investigation and exploration...doing up any old bike is always a journey of discovery, you'll find all kind of things that past owners have botched and buggered with....its just a case of taking your time and working it out..there is no general how-to on a bike thats been lived in for almost 20 years... good luck buddy.. Hey mate helpful vid do you think this will also remedy an extremely stiff clutch also? Bike is 01 fazer 600 Cheers
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 10 лет назад
Yes it will Ben, as long as its the cables that are sticking... just disconnect both ends and slip the inner cable back and forth, if its stiff, then thats your huckleberry......if not, then it could be the actuator arm... good luck with it buddy.. Del.

Del my cbr600f manual mentions no service schedule for this, so do you think some can escape this type of maintenance or maybe do you base it on the feel of the movement of the cable?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 9 лет назад
Purely on the movement of the cable, its not a service item... if they are fine, then leave htem alone mate..

Hi delboy do you have any thing on bandit throttle cable as mine has came lose at the throttle body , can i tighten without removing the carbs.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 лет назад
Hi James, you said throttle body, and carbs, so just to be clear, is it a throttle body, or carbs?? What year is the bike??... and when you say it's come 'loose', the cable usually fits in to a curved slot with what looks like a tiny hammer on the end, or cylinder, that fits on to a hole in a disc, so in what what exactly has it come loose??

I did the clutch cable on my B600. Took the cable off. Couldn't even move the cable inside the cover. Did the bit with the bleutack. After the GT85 it still felt 'knotchy'. So found a funnel that was roughly the size of the cable and screwed it on the end of the cable and used 3in1 oil until it came out the other end. Brilliantly smooth now. Cable still doesn't drop through though :-(.

Get a 50mm plastic bag or part of a bag half filled with light oil, dip the cable in and tape it tight to the cable. turn upright and squeeze the bag gently to force the oil down the cable

WD 40 is mostly solvents, I use it only for clearance, then use slightly heavier oil.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Video on how to correctly set up the Clutch & Throttle cable on a GSF 650 SA K6 Bandit.... Just bought mine & its my 1st bike but Im not happy with the way the clutch & throttle are & have been pleying with the settings. I find there is too much play in the throttle & not much usable clutch contact in the clutch cable lever its more like on or off & no in-between. Ps you videos are Fabulous for us newbies so keep up the good work......

+Robert Cole Hi Robert, we dont have a Bandit here to use for that... its pretty simple to set a cable slack on a clutch cable, its a wheel adjuster by the bar clamp.... for the throttle, its the two adjuster bottle screws under the throttle, at the top of the cables.. But as luck would have it, i will be changing some grips on the Sportster very soon...and that will involve setting up the throttle cables to the correct slack and freeplay....so keep a look out, and once you get the video notification you'll be able to watch the video and set your throttle up yourself.. wont be long, about a week or so mate... thanks for watching.. Del.

Delboy can I pick your litttle grey cells lol. My clutch cable snapped this morning but lucky I was on my way home and only had to push a few hundred yards. I have priced new cables up but have come across a universal cable repair kit for half the price of a full cable. Could I buy the repair kit and jut thread it through the original casing and use the nipples provided to make a working clutch cable??? Thanks as always and loving the new build. Safe riding.

+Ian S Hi Ian, not sure having not seen your kit,, as long as you can attach the hammer to the end securely, and its works ok, then why not. if its half the price it has to be worth a punt aye..! take yer time and make a good job of it, and it'll make you proud of yourself too... good luck mate.. let me know how it goes.. Del.

I have the emergency clutch/throttle cable coming but one of the guys on facebook part owns a company called Oily Bikers who have got us a original clutch cable for a lot less than the others wanted. Will be keeping the emergency kit handy on my trips out just in case for future help. Also got some lower handlebars a steal at 99p as I was the only bidder lol. Not put them on yet as doing it all when cable arrives so hopefully sunday should be a busy day. Thanks for all your inspiration Delboy, Your a real gent...
