I'm part of Maker Max Network, to sign up, click here: awe.sm/t7G4Z I decided to upgrade the 5400RPM IDE hard drive in my Dell Latitude D610 to a 32GB Transcend PSD330 SSD. Yes, an IDE SSD, and boy is it fast!
i got one of these mom was tryna toss it out by hiding in a bag with all sorts of other goodies computer related, so i yoinked em all and hid it. currently working on getting it runnin again
You could get a harddrive caddy for the optical drive bay (D-bay). It would still have to be an IDE drive to work with the official Dell part. I believe third party caddies exist that allow SATA drives to be used, don't quote me on that, though.
Hello, I recently got a Dell Latitude D610 from my younger sister who inadvertently ruined the HD. I found this out by running a Diagnostics test and got a Error code 1000-0146 on the DST Short Status Test. The computer is rather old and was given as a toy but I am hoping to upgrade it as a 'Tinker Toy' kind of deal. Aside from doing this SSD upgrade, do you have any suggestions?
Kyrie Eleison Upgrading the RAM and processor might also be good options. Pentium M chips are very cheap and DDR2 1GB sticks are also. I'd recommend to get an mSATA to IDE 44-pin adapter and an mSATA SSD since IDE SSDs are very overpriced. A CPU upgrade is slightly more tricky, although it will accept the latest Pentium M chips based on the Dothan core, as long as the BIOS is up to date.
I prefer not to flash the BIOS on systems I have to rely on that are more than 5 years old, plus I wasn't aware that I was running that particular version.
could i do a 128gb ssd in place of my disk drive? i have a 120gb hard drive in it already with android 5.0/cyanogenmod 12 running on it (more of a project than serious computer) but i dont use the disk drive since it really doesnt have support, figure it would be better to just replace it with more storage space
Sure. But be aware that IDE SSD's are really expensive. You should get a 2,5" IDE to mSATA adapter and a small mSATA SSD if you don't intend to spend $300 on an IDE SSD.
yeah, i know theyre expensive ive got a store where i live that has 128s for $30 but i want to keep the exgisting hdd somewhere and i figured why not swap it for a useless drive
very tempted to upgrade my ssd, my laptop currently isnt charging its battery but it its not discharging either, runs on battery but not on the adaptor without battery.
That means your adapter isn't powerful enough to charge the laptop without the battery. I believe you need a 65W adapter minimum with battery and a 90 to run without.
The Intel 915 chipset that the Latitude D610 uses actually has a SATA controller. Because SATA hard drives weren't yet commonplace when the chipset was introduced, most implementations (If not all) use a Marvell SATA to IDE bridge chip. This means that the system will properly address drives above 137GB. The bridge chip can actually be bypassed, making it possible to natively use SATA drives, but of course some electrical rework to the motherboard is required. can anyone help me I can't get any help with this... I have an old pata ssd that use ide...if I was to buy an adapter to convert it to sata would I get faster speeds then my standard 500gb 7200rpm hard drive I'm talking about boot time and being able to start programs strait away after boot and use my 500gb for my games.... or would it be slower any help appreciated
The SSD will never go faster than what IDE is capable of (100-133MB/s). It will feel faster than a regular 7200RPM drive due to significantly faster access times. Writing and reading will be roughly on par with a harddrive, if you have a top of the line IDE SSD.
+nelizmastr all I want is to be able to.use my computer as soon as It boots as I have to wait a while to use it when it.boots due to to stuff loading and I literally have no start up programs.. the ssd is probs not a top notch one just a standard 1.8 inch pata
+nelizmastr yeah that's the plan I was just trying to get away with spending more money but tbh since I've gone back to Windows 7 my start up time has improved and I can use the computer nearly strait away with out waiting.... Windows 10 is heavy on disk usage
Unfortunately, it's limited to 137GB. The drive is supported, but needs to be partitioned. The boot partition may not exceed 137GB or your boot sector will be overwritten at some point.
nelizmastr Thank you very much for your quick response. That's what I wanted to know. In fact I always partition hard drives when only one is installed in the system.
This laptop should be able to work with hard drives with partitions larger than 137GB, since it uses a SATA controller with a SATA to IDE bridge chip and therefore should support 48-bit LBA. I have at least seen Latitude D810s with 250GB hard drives from the factory, and I've also read of people using 160GB drives in ThinkPad T43s, and both of those laptops use the same chipset as the Latitude D610.
I can't mount a phone to a tripod, and I don't have the funds for a $300 camcorder and a decent tripod, so yeah, you have to make do with what you've got.
nelizmastr They make tripods for phone. $3.29 is a fairly cheap investment. The video quality was fine. www.amazon.com/Octopus-Portable-adjustable-Cellphone-Bag-Blue/dp/B007NFJN0I/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1417884357&sr=1-5&keywords=tripod+smartphone
