Garl is so goddamn loyal, it’s hard for me to not cry over his lore. Just the fact he blocks the way to Astraea with pure determination, the way he whispers “Dearest Astraea... I have failed you.” Then comes back as a black phantom as if still searching for her if she was killed first, fuck, it breaks my heart.
He comes back as a black phantom either way. But, I do like how when you kill Astrea first, he loses all his will to fight, and just stands in place, devastated, his head down, cursing you to rot in the deepest depths of this swap. Hard stuff.
"Do as you like, take your precious Demons's Soul!" ... I'm almost crying here! Indeed the best scene that I've seen in a game. I felt guilty after killing them ;/
I felt like I was a righteous hero the entire game until I got to this boss battle. Then I felt like everything I did was wrong and that I was a vicious blood hungry monster. How many games out there can make you feel like that? How many games make you question the integrity of your actions? Demon's Souls sure did...
I don't understand why fromsofware hasn't done anything like this in the souls series. There was Pricila, who was peaceful and you chould choose not to kill, but she is not nearly as good as this, her lore and fight was not even close to the feels of this fight.
I think on the contrary there are a lot of bosses like this in Dark Souls, maybe it's a bit more cryptic though. The whole Sif/Artorias backstory is kinda sad (too bad they removed Artorias' dialogue). You have Vendrick in DS2 (but don't remember that much if there are other). And of course in DS3 Lothric, you can also think of the Old Demon King that when near dead seems desperate and weakened... but I have to admit Astraea and Garl Vinland have the saddest backstory!!
One cannot help but feel pity for this knight. Sure, he tried to kill Slayer of Demons, but it was out of duty and out of his love and loyalty as well.
Alex Spink It's so sad. They never specifically say Garl Vinland loves Astrea, but you can certainly tell that he does just from what he says to your character.
+Andrewmeda Galaxy I researched the lore (i tend to do that when romance is involved). Garl Vinland and Astrea were together since childhood. After she became the Maiden, he swore to protect her from all and stay by her side forever, not just as a princess and her guardian, but as lovers as well.
God didn't abandon you. You just didn't know what he was. Miracles and sorcery....they all come from The Old One. Astrea's intentions were pure but she had to die. Such is the plight of the martyr.
It's perfect moments like this that this raw, uncut gem of a game had absolutely spot on. So meaningful yet so daring at the same time. The execution had to be band on...and it was! Maybe it's best they dont remake it....leave it be...
Demon Souls - Maiden Astraea/Garl Vinland (The feels) Dark Souls - Artorias/Sif (Ninjas why must you cut the onions?!) Dark Souls 2 - Ivory King/Sir Alonne (Sad stories tho...) Dark Souls 3 - ???/??? (The feel trip will continue!)
Loaf Bloke I never played Bloodbourne but I have seen let's plays and lore videos... and yes Gascoigne is pretty saddening. Especially when you play a certain tune he sort of stops allowing you the player to land a hit on him while he tries to regain his sanity again.
501st Commander Sad to hear that, It's just as great as the rest of the series. About Gascoigne, there's that. Then there's the fact that he unintentionally murdered his wife, his daughters both die horrible deaths and his best friend goes insane afterwards.
I have not played this game, i played dark soul and ds II, but this is a fucking masterpiece. This boss is wonderfull, the nostalgic atmosphere is amizing, the epic battle with the gentleman, the guilty feeling .... etc.
i played dark souls and finished 50 % of the game, and about 1 % of the dark souls 2 and then i played demons souls, and couldnt believe how much more this game is better,so much better about everything so for me dark souls games are past i will play only demons souls from now on
Jesus Cardenas Coming from Demon's, when I first played Dark Souls I wasn't too fond of it. Everything felt sluggish and I didn't like how they reskinned Demon's Souls bosses. And the bosses' themes weren't that good in my opinion (save for a few exceptions). However after playing it a lot I can say I love it as much as the rest of the Souls (except DkS2, that one was really disappointing).
damn it,its been about 2 years and still i cant beat demons souls,i just cant kill her :( i will enter the fog,and when she says please leave us...i will just leave and thats it
I love the Soulsborne Series' portrayal of guardian characters. Garl and velstadt both have striking resemblances. The bell shaped helm, the hammer, the thick armor with the large skirt. Their desire to protect, unwavering in faith.
when entering this place:hmm this is nice i wonder how this is gonna go down sees garl vinland's big ass hammer:oh well i wonder how i'm gonna survive this after getting to astraea:godamnit ninjas stop cutting the onions
this game... i really did´t want to fight!!, it felt so wrong and on top of that you have to do the same to her too... the same feeling you have fighting The Boss in MGS3. There is a ring in this game that you can only get by killing Yuria... but after this boss i never had the nerve to even try to get that ring... you can always get the platinum trophy from other games.
Sage Freke tells you that the "God" worshipped by Saint Urbain and his followers (and presumably by Astrea in the past) is actually a romanticized depiction of the "Old One." The Talisman of Beasts also backs this description up. Basically, Astrea realized that she was worshipping the Old One. Think about the shock that must have caused. It's like being a Christian and realizing that God and Jesus don't exist and you've been worshipping Satan the whole time. Think about how abandoned they must have felt. She then took a powerful demon's soul to help out the defiled of the world. Basically, even after finding out her religion and life were a dark lie, she gave in and accepted dark power, but only to aid those who were cast out by the world. Note that it does not say she is aligned with the Old One, merely that she accepted a demon soul. Now think about the overarching plot. Regardless of what ending you choose, your time spent traveling around and killing the larger demons for their souls is solely to summon the Old One. You are functionally the avatar of the Old One, slaying demons to gain their souls and power. All Maiden Astrea and Garl Vinland know at that point is that a powerful being carrying demons' souls has wandered into their sanctuary and murdered a ton of people. To them, you are the living avatar of the Old One, of the god they worshipped before they realized that their prayers were in vain. They had hoped to flee far from the eyes of others and do what little good they could in a dark world without God. Instead, the avatar of their false god rains destruction upon their sanctuary, murders their flock, and then ultimately kills them as well. The best part of this bit of story is how it fits into either ending. If you put the old one to sleep then the murder of Astrea is a tale of horrible necessity, of committing a terrible crime to bring about a greater good. If you accept the Old One and become a true demon then the murder of Astrea is a tale of bloodlust and wanton destruction. Of a being so caught up in its lust for power that it will kill anyone and anything.
Unfortunately, both the music and voice acting are noticeably much worse in the remake. 90% of the remake is glorious perfection, and they screwed up the most important boss not to screw up.
