It just seems more "real" and relatable, IMO. He doesn't necessarily need a costume, unless it's a big production. Even then, he'll play the Royal Albert in a zip-up hoodie... or a black tutu. You know, like one would be dressed for grocery shopping. hahaha
@@Sc-tch he has hangups just like everyone else. I’ve seen him live many times and the best performance by far was during the Empath tour in Brooklyn, just before COVID, when they didn’t even have a lighting budget and all the money went towards the musicians and the crew. everyone came out in regular clothes, there were no backing tracks, and they proceeded to give some of the greatest live performances I have ever heard
From such a funny lookin guy we get the voice of an angel, the scream of a devil, the talent of a genius, and the sick riffing skills of an alien. damn.
My favourite part about this is you can see how much Deadhead as a song means to him because of how much he puts into this, and doesnt fuck about during it at all, but just falls into a zone. One of the reasons its one of my favourite songs is because of the pain and honesty that you can feel and hear in his words.
Deadhead is the first time I conciously heard this guy! I always listened to SYL, but had no idea about his solo stuff, and finding that was like ascending to fricken nirvana bro!
Deadhead is probably one of my most favorite songs of ALL time and I'm such a music junkie. It chills me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Absolutely in love with Devy.
Well, sometimes he does fuck about during Deadhead ;) First song: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OXWmmloKF2k.html Edit: but yeah, he did look like he didn't want to be there, and fucked about to hide his discomfort and lack of flow (hide more from himself, than from others, happens to me all the time).
Honestly, I think what I love most about Deadhead is the emotion he always puts into that song. I've seen him a bunch of times, and seen videos and such of it, and every other song he jokes through, plays with the crowd, does his thing. As soon as he starts Deadhead, he's into it. Nothing else. No jokes. No banter. Just pouring his heart into it.
One of my favorite Dev moments: Saw DTP open for Gojira in Toronto, and they were having tech issues. This eventually led to Devin yelling into the mic "We're so metal, we don't NEED a kick drum!"
The first show of their 2013 tour here (Brisbane), they had all kinds of technical issues. It was their first show in eight months and everybody was a tad rusty. Dev just strummed away and cracked gags for about 30 minutes until they were sorted. :-) The guy has a career as a Vegas Lounge Lizard just waiting for him!
Fucking RIGHT! Bone crushing screams. Deadhead is probably my favourite song of Devin. One of my favourite songs of alltime. It's so fucking heavy in it's own way.
Probably the best vocal performance ever recorded. So visceral, so passionate, so much control and so much contrast. Definitely the best version of Deadhead ive ever heard. I can't imagine music getting much better than this...
Devin is simply a genious. So funny and down to earth, and at the same time able to create such masterpieces as Deadhead. That song gives me goosebumps all over, and has done since the first time I heard it years and years ago. Simply one of the best songs ever in my opinion. And to perform it like that, in such an intimate setting, it is a gem for those who were there, so thanks a lot for sharing this.
Devin is absolutely legendary. I thought I had devoured all his guitar clinic videos. I'm glad I didn't! I still remember when I discovered him back in 2009. My father had just died and this guy's music just fucking reverberated with me.
@@chinaallthetime69 Actually there's a corelation between body size and voice volume/size, which is what I think Mister was talking about. Not that Devin has a naturally heavy voice, he just has great technique.
50,000 views.... Folks, take a bow. :-) Thanks so much for watching. I'll be speaking to Dev in the U.K next month...and I'll let him know how much you guys appreciate his work. I'm sure he'll be blown away! Good stuff.
I told Devin about this in Glasgow. "Dude, my video has over 60,000 views! People really dig your shit!" Dev: "I know, man. I know. One day I'll be able to understand it myself." ;-)
ComaDave If you really do know that guy then you are a lucky person. Dev played at a music festival in Sydney a couple years ago (Soundwave festival I think) and the only reason I bought a ticket was because I knew he was going to be there. I have social anxiety (and regular anxiety), crowds panic me and I really do not like being surrounded by people. The ONLY reason I went was because Dev was playing. I even had to ditch my friends and go stand in the crowd by myself (wasn't a lot of ppl there but still...too many for me). Deadhead is still my favourite song, and partly because of Dev I have started playing again, and just recently have started learning to play Deadhead. I have been working on pinch harmonics (I suck at them but hey...kinda hard to get to grips with them when you only have acoustic to practise on). If you can, tell Dev I said 'Thank you'; because he has inspired me, and carried me through massive depression, and made me want to play the guitar again. Also, if he is still waiting for it...I make a very good cup of coffee, it is not fetid at all :)
Good man. :) I know Dev from being Administrator of his Forum for quite a few years. I wouldn't call us best buddies...but he knows me well enough to crap his pants when I bumped into him at a Scar The Martyr show at The Commodore in Vancouver a couple of years back. I won't see him until next he ventures Down Under again...so hopefully you'll get a chance to thank him in person. He's so polite, patient and accommodating with fans...hang out after your next Dev show and say "G'day". He'll appreciate it. :)
ComaDave DT seems like a very swell bloke. Music royalty I reckon, so glad he has spent his life in music. There is just something he can do with music, not to mention his sodding ridiculously amazing voice...I mean gosh, the dude has a mouth. I might try and keep my ear out for his next aussie visit. The peeps that got this special private audience are very, very lucky.
Its crazy how this mans voice is so fantastic now. He has done interviews where he has said in his syl days he would hit his crazy highs by just doing the most harsh and crazy ways to get up that register till he bled. Im surprised his vocal chords are so damn good after that
ComaDave nothing on uk though he's here pretty much every year, he did the 4 DTP by a thread shows here, retinal circus and we're getting Z2 at Royal Albert Hall next year. We're VERY lucky
lasoogneypubes oh, riiiite...sort of like how some creepy weirdos on youtube look up others' comments in order to talk bad about them...glad you couldnt live without me lol...a little mental for a DT fan arent we?
This is great! Thank you for posting for all the Dev fans out there. Only he could tear it apart like that while wearing the lamest T-shirt in the history of the textile industry. LOL
I took my video camera along to Dev's clinic last year for a bit of a laugh...to see if I could grab some fun to post on RU-vid. Never ever expected 100,000 views... It's kinda weird that this vid has more views than a lot of Devin's own ones. It's a fine testament to the man and all of his fans everywhere. Thanks. :-) (P.S. I don't get a cent out of it...I could never profit from the guy's work. He's the one who deserves that.)
Thank you for posting this, no idea how I've never found it before, but I was here at this clinic too, lived only down the road in Ripponlea, and man it was amazing seeing him, gonna be seeing devin again at the Forum November 10, can't fucking wait
This is just one of those songs,by a pure musical genius, that no matter where he sings it,in front of any size crowd, gymnasiums or arenas,he gives 100%,the audience gets 100% and you never get tired of hearing him do it.
I have a love/hate relationship with DTs music. The song Life depresses the fuck out of me but I will listen to it when i'm drunk. The only stuff he does that doesn't depress me is the angry stuff. Shitstorm puts a smile on my face, whilst Life makes me cry.
Crazy that he has one of the absolute best vocals ever!! Yet, his mix leaves his vocals nearly drown out on his performances. He mentioned it in a interview that Chad Kroeger, of all people, brought that to his attention. Devin let us hear you !!! Your vocals are KILLER!!
The Man will be back Down Under in a little over a week, and I'm going to all four shows - Brisbane, Sydney and twice in Melbourne, so hopefully I'll have some more cool stuffs to upload. :-)
