Many people forget that the music of Billie Holiday was unknown to a younger generation of music lovers in the early 70's. Diana Ross' portrayal of Lady Day resurrected interest in her iconic musical legacy. And doing it in a respectful way, yet bringing her own unique vocal styling to the project, is perhaps Diana Ross' greatest achievement, in a career that is truly unique in its own right! BRAVO, Miss Ross!
You can blame Berry for that. That's alright. Diana's got many awards that Liza doesn't even have in music and never will. Liza was a singing star, too. Also, Diana won the French Academy Award for Mahogany. So take that, USA MPAAS
IT's alright. The fans knew the truth. Especially after Liza Minnelli made a mockery of the award later with her silly theatrical choices. Besides Diana won a French Academy Award for "Mahogany". I wasn't even a teen-ager yet when I saw that movie "Cabaret" and I thought it was incredibly silly and light weight. I saw LSTB and I was like wow, what a tour-de-force.
DIANA ROSS is phenomenal in "LADY SINGS THE BLUES"......I wonder why this behind the scenes gem was left off the DVD release....Thank you for posting this great video :)
OH God this brings back memories....I was about 6 or 7 years old when I saw this film.....it changed my life permanently... A little boy tends to have strong feelings to protect even older women... Add a woman who sings emotionally charged songs & who looks like the most beautiful & perfect thing a boy ever saw in his his young life? It changes him forever... This woman from the hand of God Himself became the hero of my life ever since... Diana is bigger than her songs bigger than her voice ..bigger than her body....bigger that her smile.....and even bigger that her hair or her other worldly eyes! She is a force of nature in her character alone! She is an ALL out POSITIVE CHARGE & THRUST of ENERGY LIFE FORCE to be reckoned with ... And NO ONE can resist her....because no one really wants to! Who does NOT crave that which is pure & positive & beautiful? The truth? Not a soul!

Because Paramount Pictures are such butt heads...their stupidity is atrocious. Just look what they did to the 40th Anniversary DVD release of Mahogany. It was just the same DVD with new cover art. They didn't even bother to upgrade the sound from 2.0 mono to 5.1 DTS stereo. Nor did they bother to even include the Mahogany trailer or any deleted scenes or anything. So it doesn't surprise me that the air heads at Paramount didn't include this awesome behind the scenes footage to the DVD release of LSTB....smh

Those were screen tests. It is common for motion picture producers to shoot several different versions of the same scene. Here you can see her wearing different costumes so that the producers could decide which one would look best depending on what she was singing, or what the set looked like, etc..
Truth is for the Academy Award a certain number of people voted for her, and a certain number of people voted for Cicely Tyson essentially cancelling each other out and the oscar went to Liza Minelli.
Because Google blocks videos depending on the copyright, or permissions based on country it is shown in. Just like they can't have Pandora in several European countries. Semantics the consumer doesn't care about, but the greedy big wigs certainly do.
The Hanging and KKK bus scene keeps me from watching this movie, as much as I'd like to.....terrible imagery. I hate that part of humanity. I hate it especially,when it needs to be reenacted for movies
The movie is worth watching regardless of that horrible scene. But remember, it was more than just a scene in a movie. There are people who directly experienced those horrors. The most any of us today will experience that part of the ugly history is seeing it on TV.

Just a comment that, as the film was made in 1972 , grace jones wasn’t really on the scene at that time so I think it’s more her channeling a cool look from the 40’s. Billie holiday was a very very stylish lady as of course are Diana Ross and Grace Jones
