My biggest issue with the entire show is that at no point did I ever feel like the exorcism was a huge threat. There was no suspense. No tension. No sadness. No fear and anger at what the angels were doing. No one seems to be freaked out after the extermination. No one mourning the loss of their friends or partners. It completely destroys the entire show since absolutely none of the characters care about its premise.

I think the reason people say that happy day in hell is better than welcome to Rosas is not because one is technically better than the other. HDIH is just the more memorable and catchy song. I know that's a low bar but for the general audience and even the people who do think about the media they consume they just don't have the technical know all to judge it against. I remember the instrumental for HDIH atleast, I watched Wish a few days ago and I have no idea how welcome to Rosas sounds

I LOVE your suggestion to include Vaggie in the song! I think that actually adds a lot to her character that I wish was shown more in the series. So the fact that you could do that in a SONG makes me giddy! Showing that Vaggie is part of the reason for Charlie's continued naivety due to her tendency to shield her away from the nasty parts of hell also leads to more for Charlie. Setting up for a wake up call in the future when she actually has to do something on her own/acknowledge her people's struggle in hell! It'd be nice if her dad did similar for her when she was younger/lived with him, all the while not really listening to what she wants. The show tells me and implies that she has daddy issues through her attitude while interacting with her dad (as well as other characters reacting accordingly), but I couldn't wrap my head around it because it felt like they must've been talking about a different dad, because... Lucifer didn't really do anything. Not to mention it being introduced and solved within the same episode. Your videos make me want to study up haha. I love storytelling and enjoy musicals, and while I can recognize when I think something is off in a song- I can't express myself like you can. I don't have the vocabulary or know-how, and now that it's becoming something I care about, it feels really stifling. I don't know if this is asking for too much, or if I'm overstepping by aaying this- but it would be nice if you made videos about the basics of musicals through various topics ^^ as well recommending books or something. Either way I'm gonna look some stuff up, so thank you! The songs in Hazbin Hotel sparked a lot of interest in me for how musical songs worked, so thank you to Hazbin Hotel too lmao.

The issue with not properly showing the fact that there is redeemability of the sinners honestly feels like a first draft issue or something, because they basically hit the balance you were talking about later in the series in the canibal town section, where it shows them as basically a particularly close community that help eachother out and everything, but just happen to also eat people, which is drastically different from the mention of them in the intro. It feels like it should've been reworked to fit their later characterization better.

Hard core Hellaverse fans are territorial to insane degrees sometimes. I got shit for pointing out that not only is it very bad practice to just expect every watcher to automatically know to watch the pilot on _RU-vid_ because it serves as pretty much mandatory episode 1 But also because there is now a pretty damn obvious *language barrier* for every viewer in the rest of the world who "dare" to rely on watching it in the dub of their own language. This show has official damn dubs and it's crazy that the writers and producers just ignore that to the point where now out of the sudden the poor _International Fan dubs from years ago_ are being dragged into the crossfire because now they have to represent the show's pilot for their language, which no one ever consented to. I got SHIT for calling that out because hard core Hellaverse fans think the show only gets to exist for their little bubble and acknowledging anything else is "mean towards them". Even when it's literally about the treatment of OTHER extremely dedicated fans :/ probably even more dedicated than then considering the international fans are doing all the damn work to make Helluva Boss and the Hazbin Pilot more accessible and popular, and they are doing it for fucking FREE. The show putting them on blast now is beyond *ungrateful!* So, yeah, I feel your pain. Even if on a much smaller scale. Keep up the great work! We support you! ❤

I’m so sorry that some fan crazies made death threats- that’s awful. I would say some of them are children but surprisingly I’ve met a lot of 30 yr old fans who do this cyber bullying shtick was a hobby in the fandom at this point and that’s why I left personally.

Your problems with HDiH are a representation of my main critique of HH. I think the show could have been amazing, but it suffers from a lack of thematic focus. Does it want to focus more on individuals and their capacity to change, or be an epic tale about challenging a higher power? As you said in regards to the song, it doesn’t have a strong thesis statement, a main point that’s trying to be made or *really* focused on. I felt that the show played all its cards too soon, and, in turn, nothing really worked for me. Great video, probably my favorite analysis of yours :))

With the whole people thinking Hazbin Hotel revolutionized adult comedy musical, makes me think they dismiss or not know about other actual mature themed musicals that still does it better. Be it A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, Book of Mormon, South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut, Avenue Q, etc. I wonder if you could be able to talk about something like that of other similar mature themed musicals vs Hazbin Hotel. What they were able to get it right with their questionable topics and scenes mixed in the broadway musical formula.

I think you'd really like Wander Over Yonder. They have a musical episode that's really wholesome, as well as music sequences in other episodes. The show deserves so much more love, it has that pure Disney charm that modern Disney is struggling to produce lately(Which may be part of why Disney cancelled it after only two seasons despite it winning 3 Annie awards....)

I feel like other characters being in a similar music composition space to Charlie is made much less of a problem by it being characters like Vaggie and Emily, since Vaggie is her girlfriend and most of her personality is just being protective and encouraging of her, so it makes sense for her to have a similar musical score, and it's pretty much the same for Emily, she's basically heaven's Charlie, so it also makes sense for her music to sound similar.

Wait are there actually people that think Hazbin is some gritty and real thing? I always saw it as more Beetlejuice the musical energy (unrelated to the multiple characters played by Alex Brightman). It's a comedy story about dead people in hell making their lives better through the power of friendship, musical numbers, and actual healthy coping mechanisms, how is that dark? The only exception to the comedic tone in the whole show is Valentino.

As someone who isn’t into music on a technical level, I actually really like these videos! People need to stop being butt hurt that their fav musical number isn’t everyone’s fav. I honestly don't understand how people get so upset about someone saying something bad about the thing they like. Like, disagreeing with you on some things is half of the fun of these as a Hazbin fan in the first place, because it's usually on subjective stuff like whether something that is a technical mistake is actually bad or if the context of the show around it makes it still good, and at least in my opinion debate like that is one of the best ways to appreciate art.

Did anyone else notice how different Vaggie sounds in this song compaired to the others? Initially I only listened to the soundtrack and not watching the show and I thought "they're bloodthirsty and derenged" was being sung by Angel. I love listening to people who are as passionate as you about a subject But, more importantly, I wanna comment on how well made your rant is. Usually, these types of rants come off as really emotionally immature as most creators would just essentially whine about the fans. But you didn't raise your voice, you didn't insult them directly, and you didn't just lose your temper because of some losers on the internet. No, you first explained what is happening, why it's not fine, why you have every right to do and say what you want, why what they are doing is wrong, and why their arguments make no sense and are hypocritical. I personally think Happy day in Hell and Hell is forever are more Disney-esque than Wish, and we'll see if you convince me otherwise, but I've never had a problem with comparing HH to better disney musicals. As a huge Hazbin fan, I gotta say I always love your videos and how you analyze its songs! You give such good insight on songwriting and its conventions and how each song either goes along with or breaks them, you really manage to make such interesting to me, and not tedious like how analyzing poetry structure was in my classes-- Even though I think Stayed Gone is the only time we've agreed on a song, and I've disagreed with the fatal flaws you've brought up for other Hazbin songs, you've always made some good points in explaining why you think they lacked something. It's a shame that other Hazbin fans have given you grief, though when you're talking about something as popular as Hazbin Hotel and its music it's sadly to be expected that people with parasocial attachments will take your opinions way too personally. I'd love to see you do an analysis on Hell is Forever sometime. As for this part 25:53 according to the episode Charlie didn't know that Adam was the leader of the exorcists apparently so this change wouldn't have worked. Even though I'm honestly not sure how that works, Adam's identity is never treated as a secret yet Charlie was surprised about who he was when he told her. Also! 31:05 your voice is so pretty!!

I feel like the battle between the angels and sinners was a plot point that was added in at the last minute. The episodes barely focus on it all. They seriously have a short one minute segment at the end of episode one where Adam says he's going to exterminate all the sinners and it feels so tacked on and lazy. It's a part of the reason why the yearly extermination just doesn't feel serious. Like at all!

I honestly dont get aggressive hellaverse fans. I like Hazbin Hotel (imo Helluva Boss is better), but I'm not gonna sit here and pretend there aren't flaws. I'm just here for the funny tv man and his high school ass friendgroup, and the heavenly douche-duo.

i have to disagree with some of your points first of all i don't think the part where charlie sings about "hell's greatness" is supossed to be taken literally, but to show charlie's toxic positivism, like the "warm fuzzy feeling" is refering to hellfire and "every street so revealing" is probably for prostituion and general violent/sexual behaviour and later lines like the "cannibal town where they don't wear a frown" or "award winning demon bukkake shows" are just to show charlie's refusal to look at the crude reality she lives in, i want to think that the reason she cares about sinners is a plot point that simply hasn't been revealed yet because it clearly isn't for her education (since lucifer is shown to hate hell and sinners too) and it definitely isn't for experience (as far as we know), but even if it remained a plot hole, that would be a plot problem not a fault from the song (althoug, since it's an opening song you could argue they're a little intertwined). secondly you mention that the conflicts presented in the song (the exterminations and the people's shittines) undermine each other and are juggling too many thesis at once (you say it's at least 4, but honestly i have no idea what you mean, like lucifer isn't even referenced here), and while i do agree with the latter, you don't offer any good alternatives or consider the fact that they were working with only 8 episodes, so if they could present the main conflicts of the show in one song i think it was a good decision, even if the execution wasn't perfect i don't think lucifer thinks that heaven was right, he just lost to them and that's why he thinks trying to "fix hell" or "help sinners" is pointless and that's what he taught to charlie, not that it's a bad idea, just a stupid one, because "angels don't listen" "they're too close minded", in my opinion it makes much more sense to be depressed about feeling powerless than "having been wrong" i do agree with pretty much eveything in the second half tho, about all of the main characters establishing their respective subplots and tying that to finale to get a "before and after", that's just a great idea and missed potential from the series , especially considering that (as you mentioned) a lot of what's established in the song, was established in the introduction before, i guess my only issue with that is that it probably would turn out too long, or too repetitive if they did that but i'm pretty sure it wouldn't be that hard to work around that. so... that's all i have to say, love your videos, you're very underrated, hope you don't stay that way keep it up!

I liked your idea about the different characters singing in Happy Day in Hell that I actually tried to write a verse for Angel If I could break from these chains that hold on to my heart If I could run it all over, and have a fresh start If I could hold to a place where were miles apart If I could just break from the spell It’ll be a happy day in hell I know it’s not great, but they definitely could’ve tinkered with ideas like this and let every character shine in the opening

Course they ignore her, the way I interpret it is, this is just another Tuesday for them, like "our princess is frolicking through the streets AGAIN, this is like the 4th time this week"

The biggest issue, the 2 seperate perspectives feels more intentional to me, to charlie, who is naive, sheltered and optimistic, and importantly, rich and powerful, im sure it usually is a good day for her, but the contraat, i feel is important, it actively shows charlie for what she is, she doesnt acknowledge that "another shitty day in hell" because shes too caught up in her own moment, thats not a flaw with the song, thats the song showcasibg a character flaw

The beginning of the song was pretty nice. I remember listening to that first part back when Viv released a clip of the song at the start of the year. (Or was it last year?) Everything after that is mid and doesn't tell us anything about the characters or the world other than people in hell are jerks.

This has been a very interesting video and I truly love the way that you speak about and explain a lot of these points I’d love to see you do an in depth video like this on the hazbin hotel pilot cause I believe the pilot tells the story far better than the series. Especially if we compare happy day in hell to first song of the pilot because I think it’s just a better written “I want song” for Charlie.

Oddly enough, im not delusional, their are hazbin songs i dont like (welcome to heaven, you didnt know, ready for this, out for love) but the songs you have the most complaints for are the ones i feel are least deserving of these complaints. Personally, you didnt know is far worse, as i get tonal whiplash after tonal whiplash from the constant switching up of the tone and even music time... It just feels busy

I haven’t watched the video the whole way through yet so idk if you’ve already addressed this: I think the reason fans don’t listen to Charlie’s songs as much as the others, or why they cut out her parts in song edits, is because the other main characters in the show call Charlie’s singing annoying. When Charlie starts singing Vaggie seems annoyed and people in the song will dismiss her ideas and her singing. It sends subconscious message to the viewer that Charlie is annoying. I think they were aiming for this to be funny but in the first episode while they’re still telling the audience who Charlie is, it’s going to make the audience dislike Charlie. I feel like this gag would’ve worked better later on because by then Charlie would be fleshed out. Idk just a thought

12:18 I mean, to be fair, the visuals of "every street is so revealing its hard not to stare" has her literally looking in on a BDSM couple doing their thing in front of an open window, implying that just walking through the streets you can see _all_ of humanity on display. And her face is not disgusted, but wide eyes and intrested(in the "ohh, fascinating" way). It being a "show, dont tell" issue, the lyrics(the tell) being vague while the visuals actually showing it seems to be... what you want? As a stand alone song you have a point, the lyrics dont tell you what she means by "revealing" and that is a valid critique... but the visuals do. I mean, Charlie knows she is in hell. She knows that her subjects are porn stars, cannibals, addicts, and psycopaths(and thats just who she lets in her hotel, but also the types she has passed on the streets). Shes overly optimistic to a fault, but she also knows why they are there and is intrested in their stories. Her "lets redeem sinners" plan is a desperate bid to get the exterminations to stop, an alternative to just murdering them. She knows they are the worst of humanity( [insert list of types of sins from "inside every demon is a rainbow], and the "theyre an aquired taste" from later), shes just not sold on the idea that its all they could be. I dont know, the point is probably diffrent than Im interpeting it, but Im baffled by the idea that Charlie would need to be basically incredibly lucky to never have seen the bad side of hell, or willfully ignorant, in order to like her subjects. Yeah, shes a bit grossed out by visera and blood getting on her, but she also isnt judging her subjects for their behavior on a personal level. Its that acceptance that is how she is even open to helping them be better so they can escape the cullings, as everyone else(Alastair, Vaggie, Angel, even her father) _are_ judging them, treating their sins as reasons to not like them, and questioning whether(if not flat out denying that) they can be redeemed. I feel like Charlie's ability to look at the worst humanity has to offer, and only blink and go "oh... ok" is core to her character, and her singing brightly while looking upon the worst hell has to offer does communicate that. Though that might be outside of the strict critique of the one song that you are looking at and more how it fits into the show as a whole. I also dont have a strong background in music(I have both played an instrument and been in musicals through school, but its not something I've studied, its purely been amature stuff), so Im likely not looking at it on as deep of a level. I have found the critique to be intresting though 🙂

Would you ever consider looking at the songs in the Starkid musical “Twisted”? It’s also parodying Disney, but in my opinion it stands on its own really well.

I feel like if you take out the cuss words, dark humor and them being in hell, this is something Disney would write, and I do like what they tried to do I especially like them showing all the places and all the things that happen, it reminded me of that one song from Encanto where the protagonist shows everything that happens in the song, I guess the song does drag on a bit too long and I feel like it should’ve been two or two and a half minutes instead of three, but other than that it is a pretty solid song. Though when it’s compared to the other songs, yeah it’s not that special, plus I think I like that one abridged song of it more I forgot what the name was.

I like how you point out some of the syllable decisions! One of my least favorite examples is in More Than Anything, where Lucifer says something like "the apple doesn't fall that far" but the stress is on the "ple" part. Stuff like that feels disruptive to the flow of some HH songs and I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed!

Happy Day In Hell is one of my least favorite songs in the show. It's just several minutes making this joke of Charlie being like a Disney Princess in Hell without really doing much with it so it quickly becomes trite.

53:00 But why do we need the "do people deserve to be redeemed?" to be a stand in for class or "what is goodness" when "should people who have screwed up be given a second chance" is already something that is an issue that... not many people seem to want to talk about? The US has a penal justice system that, when you run afowl of it, beats you down and actively makes things harder for you to live on the right side of the law, as suddenly the only jobs that are open to you are the ones that dont pay enough for a person to live off of. People are against rehabilitive justice systems because "they dont work"(despite studies showing they do work at reducing crime, while penal systems increase the chances of further crimes) and would rather lock people away than go through the effort to give them a chance to be better(usually citing the fact that such programs arent 100% effective, despite missing that the current system has a 66% chance of a criminal reoffending). People would rather fund extreme measures like Louisiana castrating child abusers, even though its one of the states with the highest amount of false convictions(and, you know, the fact that those kinds of people have been recorded using objects if they cant get it up so castration would do nothing to stop future offenses, making the measure worse than useless), then fund therapeutic measures to attempt to prevent it in the first place. In case you are wondering why I bring _that_ up, these examples are off conversations Ive had in the last week. People want to "punish the wicked" even if doing so will cause more harm than compassion, rehabilitation, and preventitative measures, purely because its more emotionally satisfying, and I do think challenging that idea is a worthwhile theme on its own, it doesn't need to be a stand in for anything else.

That was a brilliant and thoughtful conclusion; your essay helped me think deeper about a show I enjoyed. I love Hazbin and its songs, but it does have major issues and taking about those issues is, imo, entertaining. Keep it up, and may the haters leave you be!

I couldn't put my finger on why HDIH didn't hit for me. this is a really good and really helpful breakdown of why it sounds nice but doesn't work for the story as much as it could have. I do love the show for what we got, but as a fan from the pilot days I wish we had gotten something better. I think the show's ultimate fatal flaw that created the overwhelming majority of its problems is that it didn't have enough time to breathe. They had so many things they wanted to explore that the opening number didn't end up addressing any of them because they couldn't decide what the main thesis of the show would be. If it had more time to breathe with a proper season runtime instead of a meager 8 episodes maybe they could have settled on what The Most Important Point is and have the other conflicts arise as we learn more about the characters. they take the assumption that you've seen the pilot because they weren't given TIME to reintroduce the story and the characters.

I used to be a moderately big hazbin hotel fan 3 years ago (late 2021) mainly because i was queer and liked the representation, now i dont give a rats dick about thus show and I'm certain that vivziepop doesnt know the fundamentals of storytelling (?)
