Dietitian Reviews Old What I Eat in a Day Wedding Diet

In another edition of What I Eat in a Day Review, because of popular demand, I'm going to review my own What I Eat in a Day video that I posted a few years ago back when I was getting married.
I have moved on from cold brew because it upset my stomach and now prefers espresso.
I stopped using protein powder and anything with artificial sweeteners when I got pregnant. I still love sour cherries after a workout because they help to reduce muscle soreness. Because I was working out a lot back then, I was paying close attention to her protein intake post workout and aiming for 20-30 g postworkout.
I have since figured out a way better way to get protein into oats with something called PROATS. You can find my favourite PROATS recipes in THE MINDFUL GLOW COOKBOOK here www.abbeyskitchen.com/the-min...
I can’t believe how many vegetables I was consuming and now would probably split that amount into two meals.
I now go for the highest fat Greek yogurt because it’s more satiating and less sour.
I still love almond butter and loves it as a topper for celery, toast, oats, ANYTHING.
I am still a huge fan of cottage cheese but recently Ive been snacking on things that are a bit more fun like an ice cream bar, popcorn or mini muffin.
Based on the macronutrient distribution, Abbey was consuming a low carb, higher protein diet.
Here’s what Abbey likes about her pre-wedding diet:
Variety, Accessibility, Antioxidants and Fibre.
How has her diet changed?
Not restrictive or calculated - I still find my wedding diet evidence of diet culture and wellness culture
She still eats a lot of veggies, but not that much!
Abbey eats more plant based.
Abbey batch preps more.
For more tips on staying healthy, recipes, dieting, and information fit for consumption by foodies everywhere stop by Abbey’s blog. abbeyskitchen.com

Soooo many brides. As soon as they're engaged. Get questions about how they're going to lose weight for the wedding. It's suuuch a problem. Thank you for speaking out about it!

It's such an unhealthy part of US wedding culture. I'm engaged, and I've already been working towards better health and fitness (for about 10 months prior to getting engaged). So many people commented that I was "already on the right track" for my wedding or would have "the sexiest bridal look."

Do people really ask that? (I haven’t been engaged or known anyone close that’s been engaged recently). That’s so rude and inappropriate. Seriously.

Unnatural vegan has taken down her old videos. Though I don't see this wedding diet video as very problematic, as Abby has pointed out herself it does kind of feed into diet culture, especially with the low carb thing which can be triggering for a lot of people. I don't know if she still has the video monetised, but still that video goes against the philosophy of her channel and should no longer be up, because it can still influence negatively a lot of people.

So you said it’s hard to eat intuitively if you’re restricting a food group and having to pay attention to everything you’re eating. Could you possibly do a video on how to eat intuitively when you have food allergies or intolerances that require you to pay attention to everything you eat?

@@AbbeysKitchen those changes often go very slow. A lot of people eat like shit and feel like shit without realising the connection or just ignoring the connection because they are just addicted to junk food. Intuïtive eating only truely works if we didn't live in an environment with so many foods that are specificly engineerd to be as addictive as possible. Today "mindfull" eating is the closest you can get. It is easy to crave all sorts of unhealthy foods but you need your mind, your knowledge, to know that maybe you crave it, but it will not make you feel good. Another point, you can be vegan without feeling restricted and it being an all day topic of thought.... I do love your video's, I'm just a bit sceptic with intuïtive eating and the bullshit I see going around in the fat acceptance movement.... Personally I am transitioning into veganism (no way am throwing away perfectly edible food that is already in my house...)(also, meat and fish and everything will be a specialty thing, though I will not prepare it myself) and I eat mindfully. I am roughly aware of what a good portion for me looks like -so no several handfulls of nuts "because they are so healthy" but just a small palm full- but I don't count calories or macro's. A lot of people need to first learn what good amounts and good foods are before they start IE/ME. I would be interested to see your thoughts on the obesity crisis and the fat acceptance and health at every size movement. Sorry for this rambly message, it is unnaturally hot where I live and it is really taking it's toll on me...

@Maj Hill food is just food, your body will naturally crave what it needs if you give it the chance and listen
@Amy19959
@Amy19959 5 лет назад
@Maj Hill I'm referring to your comment that food is a product. Food is simply food- it really doesnt need to go any deeper than that. When you remove morality from food and quit shaming yourself for eating things that we've deemed "bad", your cravings for these things naturally decrease. People who eat intuitively arent out here eating hot cheetos and donuts all day. But if you're craving "junk food" then it's likely your body needs some easy calories, carbs, fat, salt etc. You can choose not to eat the cheetos but it's important to give your body what it's really asking for (the underlying need for calories, carbs etc). By all means, choose whatever nutritionist you want and eat on your own terms :). I'm just speaking on what works for me and my clients

I love the idea of you reviewing yourself! It’s awesome of you to sort of put the spotlight on yourself... I think it shows that no one is judging anyone because of what they’re eating(which is easy to get that kind of impression on the RU-vids). It’s just important to take a look at something that’s as important as food to see general trends in your eating habits and what you might be able to incorporate to be a healthier version of you. It’s also great to see that these things change over time, and that’s not inherently good or bad, it’s just life. 👍 Love this, thanks Abbey.

Cw warning weight gain specifics I went wedding dress shopping after i had gained 50lbs in 2 months because of a medication i was on. So i was bigger than i had been in a while. My mom was obsessed with this idea that i would just "drop the weight" once i was off the meds. But i knew that that may not be the case and THATS OK. So i ordered a dress in the size that matched my measurements on that day. I didnt lose the weight in the next 6 months before the wedding. My dress fit me perfectly and i felt so gorgeous. Im at my "bigger size" but i can love myself here too. My husband does.

I’m curious about your philosophy towards intuitive eating. To me, it’s hard to recommend it as a general strategy because due to the omnipresence of junk food, most people will intuitively eat terribly unhealthy. It’s like one needs to have an existing good understanding of nutrition and also not have a palette programmed towards the Standard American Diet for intuitive eating to work.
@AbbeysKitchen
@AbbeysKitchen 5 лет назад
Rampaging Chipmunk it takes time but it’s also about giving yourself permission to enjoy said “junk” without judgment. Also what’s your definition of it “working”? Weight loss? That’s not the intention
@RampagingChipmunk
@RampagingChipmunk 5 лет назад
I define “working” as allowing a person to maintain a healthy weight and get the necessary intake of vital nutrients. Intuitive eating can certainly work for that, but our culture’s food is not designed to encourage healthy consumption. Food companies design “junk food” (Which I’m defining as highly palatable high calorie food with low nutrient density) to encourage us to eat way more of it than needed and that food is the most visibly advertised, most readily available, most convenient, and often the cheapest. That situation doesn’t lend itself to the occasional usage that is harmless like your pizza example in the video. It leads to chronic intake in larger than healthy amounts at a higher frequency than is advisable. I’d even say that people usually don’t even think about it when they eat such foods which itself could be considered eating intuitively as I implied in the first post. This gets back to my initial point that one needs to understand nutrition and not have the previously defined “junk food” as the basis of ones diet for intuitive eating to work. Unfortunately, given the distressingly high percentage of the American population that is overweight or obese, I don’t think most people meet those criteria. Most people aren’t eating a generally healthy diet and as such, I don’t know that intuitive eating is something they should be advised to do. First, they must be educated enough on nutrition so that they are capable of making good food decisions at all. That may lead to a degree of restriction by default since more knowledge will probably cause people to want to reduce their intake of “junk food” from where it was before, but I guess it doesn’t necessarily recommend restriction either; it lets people decide for themselves. Hmm. In any case, I’m out of time. Thanks for the response and keep it up with the interesting content.

i personally can’t eat intuitively because if it were up to me, i wouldn’t eat, because the meds im on suppress my appetite as a side effect. it makes it really hard to get what my body specifically needs. i’d be interested to know if there’s s way around that
@thenellierose
@thenellierose 5 лет назад
Not to mention people with weight issues, health issues, or hormonal and metabolic issues who might actually need to restrict. I do have a decent understanding of nutrition and feel I can eat intuitively at this point, and in relation to my goals, but I agree that's it's not advisable without context. Even in her prior video she was doing things like low fat yogurt that she doesn't do now (and I personally wouldn't advise). People make worse decisions just as innocently but I guess maybe they're not her intended audience...?

Paige's Baking Adventures but the total calories for the day = 100% of the daily calories, and so all contributors to the 100% of daily calories should add up to 100% of the total calories aka total calories for the day surely?

I'm guessing it's the percent of her daily value calories, so she maybe ate more calories than were scheduled for that day in the app. Not sure though.

@@emcvirtues that's not how math works. 2300 kcals= 100%, so 37%= 851kcals, 35%=805kcals, 33%=759kcals. If you add 851+805+759=2415kcals which is 105% of 2300.

So my favorite thing is to make oatmeal and add sautéed kale, season with salt, pepper, nutritional yeast, and garlic powder (also a splash of liquid aminos if I really want salt), and then top it with a fried egg. I hate sweet breakfast but oats are so healthy, so this is my go to!! Really well balanced and gets me going in the morning (and you get a runny yolk)

I use whole eggs in my oatmeal! The yolk doesn't make it savory, it makes it custardy! One of my favorite versions used finely shredded carrots and a little cream cheese and honey (and spices like cinnamon and ginger) because it tastes like carrot cake. Not sure how it compares to carrot cake nutritionally but it probably has less sugar and definitely has more complex carbs. Still, not exactly a weekday breakfast because it takes a bit more time

Re: Sweeteners: What's your opinion on stevia vs aspartame? I'd like to know an expert opinion on the matter, since I don't have to use either of them, but my dad's diabetic and insists on buying aspartame, and I kind of think stevia is better but I could use a definitive answer. Help me win the argument! Or not. Lol
@alexiazamora3500
@alexiazamora3500 5 лет назад
Yesssss!! I think Stevia would be better too, but a doctor once recommended diet beverages to a family member that was pre diabetic and those are mainly aspartame.
@arianacorrea6576
@arianacorrea6576 5 лет назад
Stevia and look into monkfruit. It’s supposed to not spike your insulin like at all. Very low glycemic. But a warning if you buy any sweetener from the “In the raw” brand it’s mixed with regular sugar so be careful.
@saraashkir5793
@saraashkir5793 5 лет назад
stella Hello, I work in a food flavoring company and we use sugar substitutes quite a bit. From what I’ve learned from my supervisor and a bit of research, neither is harmful. Aspartame is artificial, while stevia is natural. The thing is, stevia has a terrible aftertaste to some people, so it may be that your father prefers the taste of aspartame, and if he had to use stevia he would be tempted to go back to sugar or he’d be miserable. I’d ask him and see. I would also suggest trying other natural, non-caloric sweeteners. Someone mentioned monk fruit, also called luo han. That stuff is pretty good at adding sweetness, but it does have more of a candy taste like fructose, rather than a pure sugar taste. Thats fine but it just depends on preference. There’s also erythritol, which does have calories, so it might spike insulin slightly, but wayyy less than sugar would. 1 g of sugar has 4 calories, while 1 g or erythritol has 0.24! Ik calories don’t seem like a big concern but that’s how you’ll know how they affect blood sugar. Erythriol is less sweet than sugar tho, so you’d have to use about 2x the amount of sugar. I’d talk to a doctor and make sure it’s safe for a diabetic since it does have a few calories.

Hi Abbey:) I just bought you book ! just need it in my life. I was looking a bit in to mindfull eating for a while, but the problem is after reading your introduction I noticed you are writing it for a perspective of never-been-obese person. And I am overweight (for short period even cross to the dark side of obese spectrum). How can I start to practice this when clearly I do not have a good relationship with food in the first place (not restricting but overindulge?).

I just found out I'm really deficient in Vitamin D. I have been feeling horrible (relentless fatigue, body aches, headaches, etc.) , and my therapist recommended I get it tested. My doctor didn't even want to do it, but I am so glad I pushed for it. It was pretty damn low. Vitamin D is so important to feeling good and functioning day to day, and so many people are deficient and don't know it. Definitely supplementing is a good idea for a lot of people.

Thank you so much for addressing that restriction doesn’t have to look like restricting calories. That it can mean falling into wellness culture and restricting enjoyable/fun foods in order to stay “healthy”. I have a hard time explaining to people that someone can eat a calorically accurate amount for their body yet still be restricting because they are choosing food because of what they think they should eat, not what they actually feel like having or what their body is asking them for. Wellness culture is just diet culture and it’s so hard to explain that to people but it’s really messing up our ability to eat intuitively!

Hi Abbey! I'm wondering if you can do a video on "how much protein" you "need"....so many different recommendations per kg of body weight, if you're training, or not, etc. Trend seems to be to eat the max amount of protein possible when strength training, but I'm skeptical that one really needs such a high amount if I'm not an Olympian...it's a little confusing.
