Watch Disasters Of The Century Season 4 Episode 10 Knickerbocker Theatre Collapse on Bad Day HQ
The Knickerbocker Theatre was a Washington, D.C., movie theater located at 18th Street and Columbia Road in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. It collapsed on January 28, 1922 under the weight of snow from a two-day blizzard that was later dubbed the Knickerbocker Storm. The theater was showing Get-Rich-Quick Wallingford at the time of the collapse, which killed 98 patrons and injured 133 more. The disaster ranks as one of the worst in Washington. D.C. history. Former Congressman Andrew Jackson Barchfeld and a number of prominent political and business leaders were among those killed in the theater. The theater's architect, Reginald Geare, and owner, Harry Crandall, later committed suicide, Geare in 1927 and Crandall in 1937.

My Grandmother’s brother Clarence was there with his Fiance. As New England residents the snow didn’t trouble them at all and they telegraphed their evening plans. Not knowing in the immediate aftermath it was a puzzle to both families that he died in his seat and she survived. I happened upon this tonight. I finally know why my Mom always was against me going on a date to the movies in the 1970’s if it was snowing.

My grandfather played the trumpet in that band but he arranged for a substitute that night upon learning that his wife, my grandmother, was going into labor. The substitute in that orchestra chair was unfortunately killed by the roof collapse. My father, therefore, de facto saved his father’s life by being born.

Projection booths in movie theaters were required by law then to be completely separate concrete structures because of the danger of fire. That's because movie film at that time was extremely flammable. If it caught on fire, the flames had to be kept away from the auditorium where the audiences were. Thus the projectionists weren't touched by the collapsing ceiling in this case.

My great-great uncle and aunt were supposed to be there the night this happened but she came down with a cold so they stayed home. They’d been married less than a month. Crazy to think what could have happened. She always said it was God’s way of saying their time had not come. She would always urge us to stay home whenever it snowed. This explains why.

I am impressed with the re-edit and the additions to this. When originally done, I was disappointed because I made some incorrect statements that I was unable to correct because the Canadian producer never had me preview it. Other factors were also a part of the reason that I did not give correct details. One incorrect detail unfortunately is still remains in the video. My grandfather lost his arm at his shoulder and he was the one that asked them to not amputate his arm because he could then never play the violin or horn again. All the doctors had to do is put a few stitches in because the cut was so clean and straight. He visited our home in Cleveland, Ohio in 1948 a few months after I was born so I never knew him. But I have a photo of him which shows his entire sleeve of his jacket hanging at his side. My mom never liked him and asked or told him to leave our house. When my dad drove him to the airport, there was a terrific snowstorm that day. It was a wonder that he would be willing to fly back to Philadelphia in the snow but he seemed eager to leave according to my dad.

We had a TON of roofs collapse in the 2008-2009 Snowmageddon event in Spokane Washington. A lot of old barns, older flat roofed buildings, and even warehouses collapsed. Heck a Walmart Super Center did a emergency evacuation when an employee noticed a steel beam start to bend due to the amount of snow pushing the down! A Yokes grocery shoved so much snow off their roof that it was safer to slide down the resulting snow slide then to climb down a ladder! Heck I had to climb on the metal slanted barn roof because unlike the past 17 years the snow froze to the steep roof, it slid off usually! So I know ALL about snow load on a roof. Here in West Texas the locals had no CLUE! 2 feet of snow and MULTIPLE roofs collapsed! I will NEVER live in a flat roofed house after that winter......
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
equarg any architect or structural engineer will tell you, the roof is the LEAST likely part to give way. Once a building is up, it wants to stay up. On the other hand, I've seen crews literally bang on roofs and floors trying to pull a great building down. What they replaced it with, would come down in a stiff breeze, but they're stupid enough to spend 4 mil on it.
@corettaha7855
@corettaha7855 5 лет назад
equarg I’m a West Texas Native, and I knew. But it doesn’t make a lot of sense to plan your West Texas architecture around the certainty of a ton of snowfall all the time. It’s actually a desert, believe it or not. So people often think it makes sense to plan for the common instead of the exceptionally rare. Stupid humans, I know, but there you go.
@charlieangkor8649
@charlieangkor8649 4 года назад
An architect is not a meteorologist. He cannot know that there is snow in the winter. Nobody told him. He had no lecture on that which would present it, reiterate it, and then test it on an exam. That's a different area of expertise. Different degree, different school, different science.

This continues to happen to this day, water or snow on top of a building collapse it’s roof and it falls down below. Recently it even happened to an NFL stadium, luckily with nobody inside. A family run theatre a couple towns over from me collapsed from water on the roof. Nobody was inside because it happened at night. But this still happens, we’ve yet to out master the force of Gravity.

I looked up the address on Google Maps and there is literally nothing on the site to remember those who died. There's just a bank building that screams 60s-70s design. (Edit: I checked and the Ambassador was torn down in the 1960s during the great era of "lets bulldoze our history" in many countries. The site sat unoccupied from 1969 when it was bulldozed until a bank was built there in 1978). Just as an aside both the theatre architect and the owner both committed suicide, in 1927 and 1937 respectively.

Jamey: This isn't just "someone that has passed". This was a disgusting case of corporate greed and the victims should be remembered.
@Tsumami__
@Tsumami__ 6 лет назад
ptanyuh And like she already said, expecting there to be memorials in place for every incident such as this is unrealistic. Half of every city on earth would be covered in plaques memorializing victims of a bevy of forms and causes of death from everything like a theatre collapse to a mass murders to plane crashes. If the initial structure is gone it also makes no sense. If it was still standing and preserved/restored, then it would be logical to place some sort of memorial or plaque there.
@AmberStarr911
@AmberStarr911 6 лет назад
Clarrisani ‍ There are many places that put up plaques memorializing those who have died in a catastrophic event so I don't know what this bitch is trying to say. It's sad when so many people die because of the mistake of someone else and that could be the very reason they didn't put one up. So let's forget a part of history. Sad.
@Cramblit
@Cramblit 5 лет назад
@@AmberStarr911 You dont understand her basic logic that literally every city on earth would have thousands of plagues commemorating accidents when some people died by an accident? It's terrible yes, but we don't need a million plagues and memorials everytime an accident fucking happens. Trust me, you're not that special.. nobody is. This also wasn't due to "corporate greed". They did it because there was a serious lack of steel at the time due to WWI, it was a mistake that happened. Plain and simple... If that record breaking snow hadn't happened, that building would probably be standing still today, and you can't blame an architect for not calculating enough for record breaking events.. THe difference between this and other accidents that do get memorials should be apparent to anyone who isn't a moron and actually thinks about it.. Those memorials are more to preserve the incident than to preserve the idea of the people who died, and I for one don't need a plague or memorial on every corner to remind me that people will always be stupid, greedy, self centered, and parasitic creatures as a whole, because some nameless people I have no idea who they are died in an accident... There have been TRILLIONS of humans who have died due to accidents of extreme natures through the course of human history... and there will be hundreds of TRILLIONS more in the future... To think every one of these deserves a memorial is just straight up retarded.

Obviously the new regulations enacted due to the Knickerbocker collapse did not keep up as time passed as demonstrated by the Hyatt Regency balcony collapse in Kansas City. This disaster was also caused by changes made to the original design which the civil engineer of record did not review nor recalculate to see what affect the change would have on the structure.

Ironic, a simple miscalculation or failing to double check blueprints led to disaster, I know I'm probably in the minority but I do feel pity for the architect who designed the theater, his career was ruined and he was forced to live the rest of his life knowing that he could've prevented the disaster if he'd simply double checked the design

I wonder if the Knickerbocker theatre was situated in a tropical climate, would such an incident still happen?
@BadDayHQ
@BadDayHQ 3 года назад
Likely not. The weight of the snow was a major load factor.
@Sashazur

Well obviously there wouldn’t be any danger from snow - but there will be heavy rain sometimes which could be almost as dangerous.

Why can' t only the bad people in this world be the only casualties? I mean the ones beyond reproach not those who will change for the better later on. I'm not referring to any one person mentioned, it's more of an expansive thought brought on by the topic.

flat roof equals fallen roof...... look up Laudherhill middle school 1980......... too much water no place for it to go...... we were in the Kiva watching paul newman and jackie glesason and heard an "explosion".......... down came the water.

I actually saw this things in a dream before doing the research that leads to this video, in this dream i was with my family we came to this place to watch a movie I could remember also seeing one of the organizers try to entertain us in the balcony of the building before we got inside or something like that then I saw that suddenly the building collapse on us later I saw my self as a baby again it’s like we die and we’re reborn. when I watch this video it’s just exactly what I saw before my research it makes me feel like I have lived somewhere before also my left shoulder looks like it’s has been operated before bending toward the left but I have never had any problems or operation but was born like that. What do you think?

I wonder how Movie theaters during that time made any money. a sold out show of 300 people gave the theater like $10.50.
@Tindometari
@Tindometari 5 лет назад
$10.50 was a much more substantial amount of money in this time. You could get a sandwich for a quarter and coffee with it for another dime.

James Batchelor why did that comment get three upvotes? Photography isn’t entertainment. And it wasn’t a major part of the entire 19th century. Theatre is what predates film as far as art-form.

For the steel girders not bolted or connected is a joke, just laying on the wall, are you kidding me, that was going to eventually collapse even without added snow weight, just would've happened at a later date, negligence on a pathetic level.

They say this colopse is what led to regulation on aritecurere. Earlier the architect approved the changes pending approval from the Washington DC building department. That sounds a lot like regulation to me. I wonder why the roofing beams were not connected to the walls and I wonder why this was approved.

Every small childs knows by common sense that if you freely lay long things close to the edge without bolting them down, they are hazardous to fall down when something shifts them a bit. But explain this to architects! They are not small children! They are not bound by common sense! They have their universities and engineering diplomas Piled higher and Deeper (PhD) and lectures of statics and dynamics! Often I get an impression that schools actually subtract education and intelligence instead of adding them. And who would think that dropping a few tons of roof on the heads of an audience might be a problem! No lecture in mathematical analysis or finite element method stated this and it didnt came to their mind because common sense doesn't work in their brain anymore, swamped out by brainwashing of tons of abstract, reality-detached books.

judy valencia why would you think it was necessary: you hear a collapse coming and you run. You don’t think everyone hearing the same cues are going to want to sit there. Plus if you’re wrong they jail you for causing a panic. People slow you down arguing and laughing at you. Every good reason not to.
