This is exactly the video I've been looking for. I've been doing acrylic pouring a lot with my art lately and I've recently (around 3 months ago) gotten into disc golf, and all my friends were talking about how cool it'd be to dye discs like how I pour. I saw a TDIDI video featuring a woman who did it, and I want to make a notes compilation of both of your instructions!

saw a video from a disc-dyeing academy and in that video, the dude said to basically just dip a disc in and pull it straight out to begin with so you got that cell formation that you can see happen after you pull the disc... he then also said that you could essentially have multiple beds and you could dip one disc, pull it and move it to another bed to rest and let the color set. that way you could have like 10 discs come out of the same dye-bed all at once basically.
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 3 года назад
Yup! That was probably my dude Brandon Brewer. I’ll have a video out later today showing his method. But yes. As soon as you lift up the disc, all the dye is already set on the disc so you can pull it out and put it in another bed of glue or Floetrol and let it do it’s thing. 🤙

That Force is crazy cool, I'll give the traveling cup method a shot. Thanks a lot! Also, do you think the River looks smudgy because of the opto plastic or because it possibly bottomed out?
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 2 года назад
Cool man! Hope it works out. For the River, I’m leaning more towards the result being because of the plastic. It looks more smudgy on camera but it doesn’t have the same characteristics as other discs where I know it bottomed out. But! I have used Opto, Champion, or Z line where it came out looking much better too. 🤙

Great video! One question, I just bought pro chem neon dye the day before I watchef this video. Will that work for the cell technique? Or does it need to be the prosperse?
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 3 года назад
That will work! I haven’t got all the neon colors yet but I do have a couple and have used them in cell dyes with no issues. The biggest issue I’ve seen with the neon colors is when people try to mix them with alcohol/acetone. They do mix but you have to use a lot more dye (3-5x as much) than you would with other colors and you have to constantly mix them up for the dye to disperse in the alcohol/acetone.

@haytraindiscgolf4697

@@haytraindiscgolf4697 Thanks. After I pulled the disc out, the bed began to cell up. Must have been a mixing error on my part. Throwing another disc in there now. I own a disc golf shop in Saginaw, MI called Evolution Disc Golf. If you are ever in the area, come check us out. Thanks again!
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 3 года назад
@@scottbullock9882 Ok cool. Glad you got some. I usually use the initial bed, but honestly I prefer the way the cells look after you pull up the first or second disc, rather than the initial bed. I’ll keep the store in mind! I’ve got several friends in Michigan and need to make a trip up that way. 🤙

After you pull the disc out of the dye bath, do you just wash it off in the sink? I was wanting to get into doing some glue dyes but I worry washing it off in any sink even if it is washable glue.
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 2 года назад
I used to do it that way but that has to be bad for the environment or water system in general. Now I pull over the trash can, scrape all the stuff off the disc in the trash and then scrape the bed into the trash too.

If I already bought rit dye, would it still work for this technique or should I get the powder dye? Just figured I'd ask so I could save a couple bucks.
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 3 года назад
You miiiiight be able to get RIT to work but it’s pretty unlikely. Before I went to that Dye Academy class, I tried tons and tons of different mixtures to get cells and a few times I used RIT colors when I mixed up the separate cups. Most of the time the results had little to no color for the RIT colors. I’d recommend just pulling the trigger on ProChem. Be sure to get the “PROsperse Disperse Dyes” or the “Disc Golf Dyes”. The other types don’t work.

@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 3 года назад
Somewhat of a spoiler. lol it’s in the next video that I’ll be posting shortly. Little editing left to do. But! It’s 1/2 tsp of dye in an 8oz bottle, 10-12 ml of water, fill the rest with Floetrol, and add a pea sized amount of Dimethicone silicone - or 5ish drops of a thin silicone oil.

@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 2 года назад
Yeah? The big thing I’ve seen that causes the small cells is stirring. More stirring = smaller cells. There are probably other factors too like temperature, density of color mixtures, and others. I’ve usually had good luck on the 2nd or 3rd run of the same cell bed though. Curious to hear how it came out! 🤙

For some reason no one explains why they use a torch on the bed in their videos.
@haytraindiscgolf4697
@haytraindiscgolf4697 2 года назад
Yeah it’s one of those things that dyers assume that people know already. I talked about it in my first dyeing video. Using the torch is one of the methods for popping the air bubbles, that are almost inevitable. I still use the torch but now tend to prefer dipping a toothpick in alcohol and popping them one by one. It takes more time but it’s too easy to scorch your dye with a torch which messes with the colors. 🤙

$15.00 for smallest quantity of Pro Chem 1 color doesn't really make it feasible for a guy who just wants to do a disc here and there and not turn it into a business.
