www.horsepowerm... -- Properly installing your distributor involves a little bit more than just stabbing it in and setting the timing. Here's how to check the distributor depth to make sure you don't cause premature wear to either your distributor or your camshaft.

what if you did all those steps and the distributor still wont " drop in " ? I even dropped the oil pan to replace the oil pan gaskets and also took off the oil pump and dropped out the oil pump shaft and the distributor still wont fully engage 😞😩

The notch you made with a file on the bottom journal of the distributor should be indexed so that the oil stream sprays where the cam gear and distributor gear mesh. This would make it behind the vacuum advance cannister on the passenger side of the unit.

Nice video. Would have be somewhat beneficial to have a few seconds dedicated to the position of the rotor and where it should be when installing.

Thanks for the video. Good to know about measuring the length as not to destroy the engine. :) So, could you recommend a upgraded distributor for my 1976 cj7 jeep with 258 I6? I am going from a prestolite ignition to a GM TBI with fuel injection and a ecm.. Hope to allow the ecm to control spark/timing... :) Oh, by the way... I believe my cam shaft is soft iron, do you sell the dizzys specifically for the set up I'm trying to attain?

i am looking at buying a Mallory distributor this is the model (Mallory 85 Series HEI Distributor) not sure if the one in the video is the same but was wondering if you where using a flat tappet cam? reason i ask is because the one i am looking at is a steel gear and was told you can not use a steel gear with a flat tappet cam was told to use a iron gear but in the description of the (Mallory 85 Series HEI Distributor) it says it will work on flat tappet cams i am little confused

Great video as always!!! for the 2 groves in the collar at the bottom, some manufactures include O rings to go in them. Is this something thats necessary??
@jimmyhobbs5029
@jimmyhobbs5029 Год назад
The manufacturer suggests beveling the top edge of the hole in the lifter galley before you use those 9-rings. If you have a running engine I would not use the rings for fear of them hanging up and getting digested by the engine.

So I seen your distributor has no mechanical advance. why is that I thought my truck was missing it and that's why it bogs down after a few minutes of run time? it's an 80's 350 manual fuel pump. do I need that system to run daily?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 8 лет назад
Once the engine is running, not having a mechanical advance may cause it to stumble when coming up off idle. The big advantage with mechanical advance is it will make a warm engine a lot easier to restart. For race engines, deleting the mechanical advance just simplifies things, but for a daily driver street engine some form of advance--either mechanical or electronic--usually is a good idea.

+The Horsepower Monster OK that makes sense this distributor I pulled out had no vacuum advance no mechanical the module only had one wire plugged into it. I have a msd rotor and cap I order a spector distributor with both timing options. and the timing tab is weird it is not on the side it's right in the middle if you look down from the front you see it. it's a cmj motor not ugh info in it. Has the double camel humps on the heads still have no idea what motor I have .

@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 8 лет назад
+Michael Barnes If you are talking about a high-performance engine with more than 350 horsepower, Performance Distributors or FAST (used to be Crane Ignition) both have really good HEI distributors with a really hot spark, even at high rpms.

The only way to make spark distributor seat properly in some model engines is to get a hammer and bash it in until it's seated
