Yeah and that's the opposite of what gets taught in more new age spiritual circles. And they're wrong. I dated a woman for about 3 months that was from a Unity church, and this isn't so much a knock against the Unity churches as it is about what ideas can be taught in them. I used to go to 2 different Unity churches and I enjoyed the life lessons. But she has a list of maybe 25 - 40 things that she was looking for in a relationship. When I saw that I knew it was over before it ever became serious, because that's a LONG list of expectation. She had made this list in a class being taught on relationships in the church we were both going to at that time. A few years later I sought a different option. I'd been married and divorced 3 times already and didn't like what I was seeing in general. I met a woman online from the Philippines. She was from a Catholic upbringing and that means something in the Philippines as far as commitment to marriage. But there's other things. She's from a rural area, not a lot of money in places like that, but in general people are happy because they figure out how to live life with what they have. So, a conservative approach to spending money, in general. The longest I was ever married was 7 years before us. We've been married 15 years, own property in the Philippines and are building our retirement home in about 2 years. We've helped her family quite a bit and that's the fastest way to a Filipina's heart when they come from a poor family AND they have morals about life and marriage. We aren't wealthy, but the home we're building in the PH is much better than most homes there, and included solar panels and electric generators to ensure we have power, along with central AC which is unusual in the PH. Most of the time our relationship has been easy but over 15 years we've had about 3 really hard arguments. So, one every 5 years? We come from different cultures and that brings up issues. But along with that "creating" when it comes to a healthy relationship, comes commitment. This is the problem I've seen in the US. It seems like it's too easy for people to walk away from each other and I'd say at least 1/3 of marriages in the US that end in divorce, didn't need to. It was the easy path. But it's a RARE thing that a lifelong marriage is easy. They're hard. It takes work. It takes sacrifice on BOTH sides. And this is why I married a woman outside the US and since I've known Filipinas and seen how they conduct themselves in life and marriage it was an easy choice. But this isn't an American Filipina, it's a Filipina from the Philippines and it makes a difference.

@@johndoh5182 I agree with you. 100%. I have traveled alot. The Filipina was probably younger then you which is good. Hopefully under 30 with no children. So she is probably a feminine women which balances out a masculine man. American women don't know how to be feminine they think it makes them look weak of course they are wrong. When you are with a feminine woman, a man naturally becomes more masculine and takes control and leads. Of course always making sure you both are on the same page. But she trusts him to be the leader. I would never marry an American woman they are not brought up to respect men they brought up to compete with men.

I got married when I was 24. I am now 39 and still happily married. I was young, but I met my husband and he was such a great person and he helped me to be a better person, and still does. We learn from one another, we grow together. We made a commitment 14 years ago to do life together until death parts us...and we have NEVER even said the word divorce. We have been through some really hard things, but we have always grown closer through the hardships. We have worked hard to not build resentments about things, we always talk it out when we have a problem. But one of the things we always try to do is to love and serve the other person before we are selfish.

Kelly, you are the perfect woman for stating that. this woman has some great advice but I would not take it as gospel. She was looking for a Chad and she hit the lottery. She displays some selfishness in the relationship and I find it to be a warning sign whereas you are what most relationships should strive for. This woman is an attorney who is making a strong 6 figure income and she was or still is on her life path. It works for her but for 90% of the women out there, this is just a Cinderella story.

I was so frustrated, I kicked the tire of the truck (with my Birkenstocks) as it drove away. In the back of my mind, I knew there would be "consequences", but I was so mad, I didn't care. THAT is the direct "assault" that inspired him to stop the truck, get out, walk back to me and "defend" himself. Which included pile driving me headfirst into the hardest part of the driveway (he went out of his way to carry me there), then strangle me to unconsciousness, while sitting on my back, and grinding my face into the gravel driveway. As a happily married woman, the BEST advice any single person could take from this is the conscious decision to love. I will never forget when me and my husband were dating we were watching a movie and he held me and whispered in my ear "it's not always going to be like this" at the time I didn't understand what he was saying, and I didn't ask, but I remembered what he said. My boyfriend at the time knew and understood what marriage was because of his parents. I on the other hand hadn't experienced marriage in anyway. It wasn't until we got married I understood that night what he told me. Being married and in love can be described as a light switch "off" "on" ; moods, sexual desires, bills, children, lifestyles ect. I often think on that night when we were in the "butterfly stage," it moves me as a wife to keep going!

I won't say someone is automatically better because they would have to live up to those expectations. If we're willing to accept the short comings then the better off will be of what you're willing and won't accept.

When I divorced the ex, I moved on immediately. I had been working to save the marriage for so long while he just coasted. When I was done, I was completely through. It was a relief to stop trying to save the marriage. I heard from people he and I both knew, all the lies he was spreading about me. I moved 600 miles away for a fresh start. He met a woman with a lot of money, not much else to offer. He married her & is still miserable. I'm happy to have my freedom, the life I built from the ground up, the career I have that I love & have built. The divorce hurt my children & I regret causing them pain. @@mariaakopyan-dignifieddivo5694 Thank you. It took a lot of working on myself, making a new & better life for myself, all while I was working to figure out who I am, all over again. I see people who divorce, jumping into another marriage within 2 years after the divorce. Many will do it because they are afraid to be alone. They miss the regular sex (even if it was just twice per month or even once per month). They don't know who they are, it scares them, so they try to fill the space with another person. The world is geared to couples, telling singles that they don't belong or will be incomplete without another. You probably have seen this, long before I did. Sure, the people who jump into another relationship are content, yet, from the ones I have spoken with, they are somewhat content. They are more accepted by the world, by society, yet, not as happy as they thought they would be once they "found someone". They also feel that something is missing, though, unsure as to what it is.

@Mndzebele Melinda That depends on how good the person has become at deceiving - living behind that facade. There are some who drop the facade within 6 months and others who peek out after a year or two. That's why it's important to stay on the level of friends or associates - not to get intimate - until we either see that the person is not honest, not trustworthy, or is being manipulative, not genuine, or if they are consistently honest, truthful and genuine all the time, worthy of trust.

the advice and tips are great for building a strong foundation to help newlyweds. nothing will ever prevent a divorce. the harder you try, the worst it gets. just accept your partner for who they are. when they win, celebrate. when they lose, stand by them. when they're trauma, bad habits, and/or poor decisions happen, accept it and make a decision that is best for you and your family. be hopeful, but don't be unrealistic. listen to your body and soul and you'll find your answer. if two people are meant to be, it'll be. you have a choice. practice being grateful and don't make problems bigger than it is. Enjoy your marriage while it's working, regardless of when it's easy or difficult. Say goodbye, when there is no longer a string attached. Easier said then done, but that is my value atm and it has helped me tremendously. of course, each to their own.

I think couples should marry when they think they are ready and willing to grow and make mistakes together. It seems communication is the gap missing because one can never forsee all challenges in the future. But if you communicate then you have a chance to smooth out your differences.
@abdulabdul-qg3mc

Compatibility is overrated. You can happily be with someone you aren’t compatible with, as long as your differences aren’t intolerable. Connection is the key. You have to be strongly connected, be able to be completely ‘naked’ (not physical nakedness, in this context) to each other.

It took me or us getting to truly know what is love and knowing that's its continuous growth, respect, forgiveness, and each other to grow support in our purposes that's when the light got brighter. @@vanderumd11 I think we have different definitions of what a high value means. Just because someone is tall and makes a good income, doesn’t actually make them high value. Someone with good character will always pick a good partner. If you go to any high stakes/high society, all the men are married to women their age who are accomplished and attractive. There are a few that have gold diggers but they are essentially the butt of all jokes. I just feel like you guys don’t actually know what the lives of higher income people actually look like. It’s just a bunch of broke people fantasizing about how they can buy night walkers/sugar babies. But that kind of stuff gets tiring for people with wealth. The wrong kind of partner will seriously destroy you. Those people don’t have time to get married to immature high liability partners.

One thing is too see all sides of marriage as she did as a lawyer, watching from the outside in, and another is to be in a marriage. She’s recently married so we need to wait and how she deals with it. I thought too I knew about marriage when we were 2yrs in but turns out I didn’t. I met my wife when I was 20yrs. old and she was 19, I’m now 45 and more in love than ever. We learned life together because we made a commitment to each other at that age.

@@shannonbrowe3870 I don't agree. She doesn't have to be married for 20 years to truly have wisdom on marriage. There are people who have been married for many years who have no clue on how to make a good marriage. I have seen this. Just the same for parents. I don't have to be a parent to know what it takes to be a good parent. I know parents with many children, and they suck at being a parent. Not everyone gains insight or wisdom through experience. Some of us can gain insight and wisdom from looking at other people's experiences. I think it's better to say if she will live by her own words of wisdom. Not everyone live by what they preach. But I hope she will and have a successful marriage.
