This is a detailed guide on how to change the diesel fuel filter on a 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6. The procedure also applies to the Discovery 3 and Discovery 4 with the same engine family (TDV6 or SDV6). I'm keeping with the recommendation I made when I replaced a similar filter on the Kia Sportage - that they be changed after 30,000 km (19,000 miles) or 2 years at most.

Great video, very detailed. My land rover has died, and I can only think the fuel filter must be old, and it’s broken down. But I can now explore this confidently.

Nice in depth video thanks. Any chance you can show the bleeding tool conector that you made please
@TheMissingBolt

Hello! That connector is just a standard air pump nozzle designed for filling bike tires. I haven't customised / modified it in any way. It works because the fuel bleeding point uses a Schrader valve, just like a bike tire.

Hi, thanks for that in-depth explanation. I'd like to ask some questions: I have scanned my car and got the error "water in fuel" which was active but no light lit up in the cluster. What comes up is the yellow triangle saying restricted performances even though the car doesn't go in limp mode. Could it be the water sensor and or the fuel filter? I bought the (same as yours) car used and don't actually know if or when it has been replaced. It says also P0033 "turbocharger bypass valve circuit open" but I checked either the solenoid or the harness and it looks to be fine. Thanks again!

Hi! The sensor which triggers the "water in fuel" warning is the one at the bottom of the fuel filter. What I suggest is to check for water in the fuel yourself as I described in the video starting from 22:16. If you do see water in the fuel, then you need to purge the fuel tank and lines up to the filter immediately. Since you have no history of the filter, it's best to also replace it as preventative maintenance. Also worth checking when the "water in fuel" error was logged in the system - if the error is still present but you don't find any water, then most likely the sensor itself needs to be replaced. As for the P0033 code, check if the error is present or is historic / not present. If it is present, verify if the electrical connector to the turbo is attached correctly.

@@TheMissingBolt Thanks a lot for your kind reply. I can confirm that the error about the water in the fuel was active and present at the moment I scanned the system. Soon after I erased the errors and it was gone, but I didn't check for it later so I assume it came back on later since it was logged as "active". I'm gonna check the filter for water and will do as you suggested. About the turbocharger bypass valve, I checked the harness and the solenoid itself and both look good. The only strange thing was the voltage that trigger the solenoid. The moment I turn on the system it reads 8V and as soon as the system checks the solenoid voltage appears to go for 11,xx which I believe is the battery voltage at the moment. If I fire the engine, the voltage reaches 12.8 V but after a while, the restricted performances appear on the cluster. If the car sits out for a certain time and the outside temperature is quite low the light doesn't turn on. I'm going crazy...

first of all thank you for your great videos I need some information please, in fact I have just bought a Range Rover sport 3.0 V6, and the radiator turns as soon as I start the engine even when cold, is this normal??
@TheMissingBolt
@TheMissingBolt 3 месяца назад
Hi! Yes, this is normal because the fan is connected to the crankshaft via viscous coupling, not driven by an electric motor. This is done for increased reliability when off-roading and especially water wading, as an electric motor might short out if subjected to water, potentially shutting the fan down. Depending on the temperature, the fan may spin slower or faster (as controlled by the coupling), but it never stops spinning.
