Sharing a honest first time experience modding the IMS competition basket for my Breville Barista Express. When I was looking into this I had a lot of questions about how to actually do it, so I figure there will be others out there with the same questions. So hopefully after this video, you will decide if this mod is worth the effort for you.
Though not perfect, but the mod is functional.
For those that want to avoid the trouble, this is the newer basket designed for Breville.
There seems to be 3 sizes available, but are out of stock everywhere I looked at time of writing.

Happy weekend guys! So after some searching and confusion, I ended up finding the right IMS basket for Breville AFTER I completed this project. Just to avoid any confusion for you guys, you can purchase the IMS Breville basket here amzn.to/2T7XH3z, as of time of writing, it seems that its $37 vs $20 that I paid for this one. So if you want to avoid a DIY project, you can opt for this one.

I got the IMS Breville basket and I do not need to do any mod. But I do have to remove the plastic piece in the stock portafilter before it fits perfectly. I was able to brew without taking the plastic piece out until I figured out that can be done from Hoon's video. The difference in shots was like night and day. I highly recommend this upgrade. cheers

IMS are now making baskets for Breville, you no longer have to do the mod if you buy the right basket.

Fastest comment ever =] Yeah I was looking around a lot and did not come across the 53mm one that they made for Breville till after this little project was done. If I am not mistaken this is the one amzn.to/2T7XH3z for $37. However it seems that it's not in stock at the moment. Either way I figured that it would be nice to share my experience to either deter or entice people from doing this lol.

Haha yeah, still a good idea if you can't get the Ione made for Breville, modding it is still worth it. I reckon the IMS baskets are much better than the stock baskets!!!

@@clumpyification Just a lot of work without the right tools, did not expect so spend so much time doing it lol. But yes the water spread is a lot more even, though for denser light roasts I would probably need a single basket for the 18 gram shots that I normally pull, this works better for medium-dark roasts.

Thanks for this! I just got my basket today.. the Breville basket isn't in stock... Late july For me I wanted a bigger basket so that I can pull 18+ g of coffee.. right now with my stock basket I do 17g

Hopefully you have a better tool at home for this lol. But for your purpose I think you will enjoying using this.

@@XICups I did it based on your recommendations.. it took me around half hour.. it's not pretty but it works😂😂 there's a round gray stone that's for smoothing and removing metal that works great. Now that it's modded, the dosing funnel doesn't sit properly because there's less surface area for it to sit on but still works.

@@JustNel Oh wow, that's so much faster than me lol shows how horrible I am at this, or perhaps my dremel was just too weak. But did you over grind the lip? cuz I still have a fair bit left after I was done.

@@XICups I am like batman... i do a lot of prep before doing anything haha! i tried to make sure i wouldnt have clearance issues but it works. Ill by a dosing funnel that is 3d printed so that it hooks into the portafilter instead

@@JustNel Yeah that's going to work great. I am actually using a 3D printed dosing funnel and it really helps with some of the irregular edges left by my crappy hand work lol. Side note, after testing for a few weeks, I think the sweet spot is at 22grams if you are using a medium to medium light roast. Hope this will give you a starting point to play with the adjustments.
