In case you were all wondering what happened to our indoor guinea pig pasture after a week of being exposed to Peanut, Dumpling, and Tofu... here is a little update for you! Our little hydroponic grass experiment is still green, and piggies are starting to frolic around freely now that they have more time to explore it. They've been sleeping on it, eating it, and sniffing it all day. It's now their favorite location to sunbathe in the mornings now that it is a bit chillier. You could like a rotating pasture system, where you close half of the grass to the piggies so it can grow/recover while they eat the other half, then switch when recovered. We use that for our farm animals but I’m sure it’s work on a smaller scale :)

Could perhaps try two entrances, one for each side, and close/open each side as necessary to get them to eat the side that needs eating.

I’m amazed at how green the grass looks after a couple days! I know if I ever built something like this for my rabbits they would destroy it within 2 hours😂. Much love to your piggies!❤️

Mayne yours is like the rabbit I used to have 😂 they eat a ton! They'll finish off a huge pile of grass and stuff the size of their body in 15 mins... so idk how to go about giving them unlimited hat like people say they need to

Awesome idea!! AWESOME!! I'm so excited for you and all involved building this hydro culture pasture. My only suggestion for you if you make it a kit..have the ability to raise or lower the legs! This is sweet. I live up north. A couple times a winter I plant a "flat" ( the cookie sheet sized tray they put the plant starters in) with wheat grass for my cat. She loves to flop on her side and nibble till she falls asleep. Happy cat.

I remember that I would bring my guinea pig outside with my neighborhood friends and he would eat lots of our grass. They always fed grass to him and they called him a lawn mower. heh I miss that little piggy

Our piggies live outside (for allergy reasons) so grass is their main treat. However much they love dandelion leaves more, piggies will never get bored of grass!

if you remake it have the rocks a little deeper, that way the roots can grow down and the grass will be stronger and not as easily compressed. it will also need less reseeding too.

I used to just plop my guinea pig in the backyard with a laundry basket on top (mostly so something doesn't run up and eat him). He'd just spin in a circle and eat and eat and start chirping when he wants to go back inside.

I don’t know if they eat the seeds, but just spread new seeds on top without even changing anything would probably grow just as well. The roots have a better time growing on top of that old grass compost, also their poop would be good fertilizer. It would probably create its own dirt. I like how they have access whenever they want but do they eat bugs? Bugs would be coool

Hi!!! Hey, I would suggest doing a beehive terrace. how does it work? Basically, you prepare several rubber or recycled plastic trays in a layer scheme, so you grow multiple patches at the time. You could try something instead of gravel at the bottom like stove or horse pellets or similar. Their poos are also great fertilizers! Delighted with your idea, thank you so much!

This is too cute! Can pigs have different types of grass? It would be neat to do an experiment in planting different plots of grass to see if they favor a certain diet. Also, you should separate pastures so you can rotate crop. While one plot is growing the other is open to forage on and vise versa. With your creativeness it wouldn't take much to section it of and have little doors. Thank you for caring so deeply for these creatures. Peanut is sassy! :)

Yes they can eat different types of grass including barley, but legume types (i.e. alfafa) need to be limited unless they are a baby or pregnant. Peanut's sassy alright :)

You could try and make pasture with relatively small mesh above soil (ground), small enough so pigies legs don't get stuck, but wide enough so grass can freely grow trough. In that way, grass would not be stomped and could grow always upright.

I love your set up, I think the only thing I would do differently is maybe grow the grass in a DIY fodder system so it's rotational you wouldnt need many I suppose being it takes them a bit but that way you could replace the biscuits (the patch you've grown comes up together in like a fodder biscuit) when they eat it all up. To keep it going if it takes a few days maybe mist it by hand? That way you wouldn't need to set up the water there where they are. Still really cool though.

I prefer use small trays, when them ruin the grass I just trow off and start again, I have 7 or 10 growing in different stages.. Is easier to me. Nice video.

Haha! A week in and their already picky about which area and color the grass is! That's how our piggies would be, we give them nice hay and they get picky... We have to alternate brands every week so they get in their hay! They won't even eat hay that's been in the trough longer than a full day (like I fill it up in the morning and the next day it's just not eddible to them...)

Awasome video @guineadad the set up looks really comfy and amazing and they truly appreciate all you do for them 💪 how do you think the grass fits into there diet id really wanna make a set up similar to this but am just womdering can they eat grass all the time and also would you ever make your own laundry detergent pods /products to clean your liners i know you showed previously what to purchase but would you venture into that and aswell as other fleece accesories, hideys, ramp covers etc?

Thank you for watching. We are always thinking about new products that will not only support the existing products, but will help guinea pigs live better lives. So, with any food I would make sure you gradually introduce it to them so their stomach gets more used to it. When it comes to certain types of grass (non-legume type), they are totally fine to graze as much as they want (again, once their stomach gets used to it over couple days). These types of grass including Timothy, Orchard, Barley, and Oat (and many others) have high fiber, low protein and calcium. Barley actually has less calcium for Timothy, so it could be better for Peanut who's had mild case of UTI in the past. Hope that answers your question.

Hi, are you referring to Timothy grass? You can plant any grass you wish :) Many of them are suitable for guinea pigs except legume type.

Thanks for watching! You need to try to control the amount if it is their first time so their stomach gets used to a new type of food. Once you do that, grasses are totally fine especially high fiber sources like barley (similar to Timothy and any other non-legume type). It also has lower calcium content than timothy, which is good for Peanut who had mild case of UTI in the past.

@@AdjustingLight depends on each guinea pig. You need to let them learn. I used to have a similar thing but ot was a variety of barley and sprouts and lettuce. Some of my guinea pig adapt to this by drinking waaayy less water. The other one, she did got bloated and kept having mushy poops, but after a week or so it stopped and I noticed now she learns to eat only enough and not to drink much water. I also changed their diet and I don't give them "water" veggies, and give them dried snacks instead (not too much tho! Only on occasion or it'll hurt their stomach). I hope that make sense, English isn't my native language 😅

The pee doesn't really matter because it gets diluted into huge body of water (compared to pee). The poop... on the other hand, you need to pick them out lol. I probably left some, but that's fertilizing ;)

Are you worried about them eating all the grass before it can re-grow or if the grass has enough nutrients? I thought about doing this for my guinea pig but I fear he would eat it all before it could seed new growth.

That is a legit concern. The reason I made the lowest step removable (now the cushion) is to prevent them from going up when it is getting watered or whenever the grass might need more time to grow. Thanks for asking :)
