This is not a true comparison in a sense that these two scopes only look similar on paper. When you put them side by side and look both at them and through them, it is immediately apparent that the fill a very different niche.
On terms of optomechanical quality, they are both quite nice and surprised me a little with how well they do for the money.
The Trihawk is faster on target, partly because of the wider FOV and partly because of a bold and visible reticle. If you do not mind the weight (and it is not really that heavy, until you put it up next to the RT-3), it is a really excellent option. I am about my TriHawk off to a friend of mine, so I am very curious what he thinks. If it has a MRAD reticle, I would have kept it.
Burris RT-3 is really tiny and light. It ended up being quicker in actual use than I expected and the FOV is still quite respectable. It is, for example, wider than the ACOG 3x30 (although eye relief is less flexible) and wider than the discontinued Elcan Spectre OS 3x that was previously my favourite 3x prismatic. I gave one to my brother, so I will do a comparison in not too distant future.
In many ways, one of the biggest surprises of the last couple of years for me was how good prismatic scopes from several Chinese OEMs have gotten.
SwampFox Blade 1x and Trihawk3x along with Burris RT-3, PA GLx 2x and
a few others are a testament to that as are some new offerings from other makers. More are coming as well. As much as I like several ACOGs and higher end prismatics, it is increasingly more difficult for me to make a case for them given how good these $300 to $400 options are. Time will tell how durable they are, but so far they are really holding up nicely.
It is also important that these have adjustable eyepieces (ACOGs and Elcans do not).

Awesome Vid! The 9oz weight of the Burris RT-3 really makes it rather attractive for a lightweight rifle application.

Very nice review, i was thinking of getting the RT-3 till i saw this review ! With the much larger reticle and fov combined with the shakeawake of the Trihawk it was a done deal for me, i just ordered one ! Thx for this review !

I just bought the Swampfox - I like the reticle - love those chevron reticles as I cut my teeth on ACOGs - If you had a part in that design then Thank you! But the size & weight I don't care for. So I'm liking the Burris' weight. 8.8oz. w/mount - Yes please. The reticle doesn't look good though. I know it's a small thing, but I think I prefer the bikini scope covers rather than flip ups (that always fall off) I can use a zip tie and tie the bikini scope cover to the optic, so it never gets lost. FYI: Athlon Optics Midas TSP4 Prism: 16.8 oz. (negative). FOV 24.9 ft. takes Aimpoint micro mounts, but has optional Green & Red reticle illumination.

I prefer the reticle on SwampFox, but Prefer the red over the green. It just seems a little less cloudy. So for me, it's really just a toss up. Little bit of weight don't really matter to Me. To Much. Im not a small guy. Haha. Thanks for sharing neighbour. 👍🇺🇲✌

Can you recommend a scope for me? Between the Arken ep4, the element titan or the Athlon Midas Tac. I was liking the Arken but the 3-4 month back order has me worried. Especially if I ever need warranty work. Is that going to be 3-4 months. That being said I think the Arken ep-4 glass is Japanese. I know Japanese and European glass is the good stuff but I hear China has stepped up their game as well. Bottom line I need a scope that has lots of internal adjustment, zero stop, parallax down to at least 25 yards but hopefully less and has a wide range of magnification and GREAT glass. All for less than the nightforce nx8 or atacr. I’d like to spend up to $900. I just bought a Tract Toric and Athlon Midas Tac but haven’t got the tract yet and haven’t used the Midas. Leupold doesn’t parallax down enough so I sold 3 of my HD scopes. Shooting .22’s for competition and we go from 25-300yards.
@DarkLordOfOptics
@DarkLordOfOptics 3 года назад
I have not tested the Arken, so I do not have any strong opinions about it. I do like Element Titan and Athlon Ares ETR quite a lot. Midas Tac is a nice scope, but I really like to have reticle illumination in FFP scopes. It helps a lot on lower magnifications and in tricky light. Take a close look at the reticles in these scopes and see which would work best for you. That would be a good start.

I have a question. I am also from LA, CA and a fanatic in prism optics. I use ACOG TA31F with Larue RCO mount for my main rifle. For my fun AR22 rifle, I want to use prism so I got Vortex 5x Gen 2 with Venom. I am not so fond of vortex Gen 2. I could not find a good mount to get eye relief to work well with me. I’m thinking I want to try PA micro prism 3x. What’s your thoughts? I read from AR 15 forum that you tried both. Any insights? I tried Burris RT-3 as well and thought it was meh. I was gonna get Sig Bravo4 but it is too heavy for AR22 rifle(trying to keep optic under 15oz). Your insight will be good when you compare new micro PA3x to trihawk. I also want to add I had ACOG TA44 and TA33 but I was not fan of them. Too less magnification on TA44 and TA33 was like looking through a tube. By the way, I liked your video and subscribed

Interesting, I have no issues with the eye relief of the Gen2 Spitfire. TA-31 is much less forgiving to me. PA 3x Microprism is quite nice and I prefer it to the RT-3. A lot of it is due to the reticle. Generally, with magnified prismatics, if you want more flexible eyerelief, you should be looking at large prism options like the Trihawk.

@@DarkLordOfOptics how is glass quality and clarity of the spitfire 5x Gen 2 compared to trihawk 3x ?? I noticed in your video that it is significantly better FOV but it comes with a price of 5 more oz. If you had to recommend me one, which one would you recommend between the trihawk 3x, spitfire 5x, PA micro 3x ? I am planning to get centurion arms micro optic mount to push the spitfire 5x even further back as the fortis F1 mount didn’t work well because of the recoil lug position.
@DarkLordOfOptics
@DarkLordOfOptics 2 года назад
@@kms7852 Comparing optical quality of scopes that have different magnifications is really difficult and usually inappropriate. In terms of "perceived" optical quality, which is influenced by the very wide FOV of the SwampFox, the Trihawk has a bit of an edge of the micro-prisms, but that comes at the expense of weight. That having been said, I am pretty happy with all the ones you mentioned given the price and size. It really comes down to what you are lookign for. If 5 extra ounces does not make a difference for your applications, Trihawk is a really easy scope to use with a huge sight picture and forgiving eyebox. If you are trying to go as light as possible, PA's Micro 3x is really nice with a nicely sized reticle. That al having been said, I'd spent some time on getting the Gen2 Spitfire you already have properly dialed in. It really is a very nice prismatic and good quality 5x at this price and weight is really impressive.
@kms7852
@kms7852 2 года назад
@@DarkLordOfOptics I appreciate the detailed response. I modified the F1 fortis micro T1 mount and moved it way back so spitfire 5x is pretty quick with a long length of pull now. I think I’ll stick with spitfire 5x cause I enjoy Burris Fastfire on top. In fact I like it so much that I bought a vortex venom for my ACOG ta31f and found a piggy back mount(cheaper than RMR version). This way if vortex breaks, they’ll replace indefinitely with good warranty. I use RMR on my 1911 and SRO on buckmark but they’re too expensive for rifle backup piggy back optic.

I think the Spitfire 3x is more or less the same scope as the RT-3, but I like the reticle more. I was not planning to spend much time on it since it is so similar. I have a Spitfire 5x here and that review is coming soon. PA's Micro Prism 3x is probably my favourite of the tiny prismatics and that review will be very shortly.

Wow also a good vid comparing red vs green reticles. I've found both to work but green slightly pops more. Really interested in trying Amber as well. The RT-3's reticle looks so small like it's barely usable for holds. Is that the case in real life? Reminds me of the holosun red dots with ACSS reticle.

I have the amber 1X by Swampfox. I’ll never use a red Reticle ever again. And I was looking for videos right before I bought the 3X in green. I just return the vortex 5X prism scope the new small one it’s would be great if it Had some Eye relief, you got to put your eye right up next to it so it just won’t work for me . A lot of other people are having the same complaints. and it’s almost $500

@@j.p.4541 It is a really excellent prismatic for the money. It is not small, but it is easy to get behind and the FOV is really immersive. I do not think I would get hit with it on a 308 gas gun. To be fair, most of the new generation prismatics have perfectly reasonable eye relief.

@DarkLordOfOptics

That is not a bad way to go, but it will still be heavier (especially with the mount) and to get comparable optomechanical quality in an LPVO, you will pay quite a lot more money. At least double and probably more than that.
