This is excellent stuff, Derek. if I had heard this twenty plus years ago I may have become and atheist rather than a polytheist. You're making very clear here what the real story is regarding atheists and belief.

I don't know a single atheist who is a nihilist. I am certain they exist. But think about some deists who have nihilist-like tendencies. Some of them believe that once they believe nothing else in life matters.
@realitycheck966

Who cares? You are merely saying you don't know any atheists who live consistently with atheism. Most atheists live inauthentic lives. That's a deficiency of atheism. It doesn't change the fact that atheism (no God) is inescapably Nihilistic by logical force. There is no basis or foundation in REALITY for any real meaning, significance or objective moral realm without God.

My immediate friend circle is mostly atheist/agnostic. 3 of us are filled with life and belief, one of us has already crossed to the dark Barron hole that lies under nihilism.

I guess it depends on your definition of nihilism. Just my subjective opinion but there is no such thing as inherent value because value is subjective. Also since I don't believe there is some cosmic being dictating life, I believe we give our lives our own subjective purpose
@kayamann321

That’s what I thought nihilism is…I’m an atheist nihilist. Why? Because I say I am. Nothing matters or has meaning inherently, so I make or create meaning and things that “matter.”
@ericb9804

Amen, Derek! "Atheist" is just a boogeyman term because the story of how they make meaning and purpose in life isn't well known to the theist. And so the theist assumes they are a threat.

The problem with many words like belief, faith, spirituality, etc, is the fact organized religion has changed the meaning of such words by focusing on a specific meaning of such words. For example, using the definition of faith as belief for something there is no evidence for, vs confidence based on evidence, facts, logic, and reason. For example, due to how many billions of years the wrath has revolved around the sun causing the sun to rise and fall, we can have a high degree of faith/confidence we will see the sun rise in the morning and set in the evening. By changing the meaning of words like faith to only mean things associated with religious beliefs, organized religion uses such words to manipulate the masses, to gain political power, and oppress those who have views different from ourselves.

Without a death cult membership that makes you half wishing to die and half afraid of what will happen when you do; doesn’t make you a nihilist. It makes you free and happy.

The issue I have with Derek's approach is that many Atheists accuse theists of believing in fairy tales, or in other words, a false narrative . But it seems like Derek is saying create your own myth or purpose. As long as it gets you out of bed, then do it?

@@scottplumer3668 No. First, it's not mythology. Second, it makes everything about the human condition make perfect sense Third, the truth of Christ, is evidenced in the way its changed lives. Fir anyone who compare Christianity to other religions and doesn't see the difference, shows that they have very little understanding of any religion. Fifth, the truth if Christ is evidenced in the accomplishment of Christ followers. If you understood the contributions that Christians have made to the world- the first universities, the first hospitals, homes for the poor, etc. you might not be so flip.

@@pdworld3421 The Grateful Dead changed my life. Does that mean that Jerry Garcia is the savior? Of course not. Christianity may have changed your life, and that's great. Good for you. But it's fundamentally no different than any other religion. Other religion's followers take their faith just as seriously as yours. What makes theirs false and yours true? I'm genuinely curious. I understand that churches established the first universities, etc., but that was because they were the big institution that _could_ do that. That doesn't speak to the truth of their theology in any way. You don't have to answer. We could go back and forth on this forever and not get anywhere.
@pdworld3421

@@scottplumer3668 the Grateful Dead changed your life. Really? In what way? Did you become a better person? Did you become more selfless? More compassionate? Did you give up anything worldly? Did you go qnd feed the poor? Did you suddenly see the least fortunate people, the homeless, the poor in spirit, as worthless than yourself? Did you go into prisons and lift the spirits of the incarcerated because you cared so much for those abandoned by society? I doubt it. When I say, changer lives, I mean changed lives dramatically in a positive and selfless way. Here's what I hear from atheists who's claims that they were religious and becoming atheists made their life's better. "It made me free. I'm no longer responsible to a being larger than myself." In other words- atheists think theor lives are better because, without God, they're able to live a far more selfish life. With Christians, it's completely the other way around and that's the way ots supposed to be.

Perception is all we have in this life essentially, Derek keeps subtly inferring however that previous revelations are myths or just pure stories. That misses out the whole logical thought process of being created and the fact there is being at all. Man wants to put himself at the top essentially, it's dangerously arrogant..we havn't even mapped the oceans for example..yet claim autonomous agency.0
