Members of the restored Church (otherwise known as the Mormon Church or LDS Church) often emphasize getting married in one of the religion's many temples. We believe that marriage in the temple can last for all eternity, not just this life.
But do you HAVE to get married in the temple? What happens if you don't? And what would prevent you from getting married in the temple?
Justin, David, and Mimi talk about the reasons why you should get married in the temple as well as why it's okay to NOT get married in the temple.

On my mission in California, I met a married couple who were members of the Church and had 3 teenagers, but they had only been married civilly. When my companion and I brought up the subject of them getting sealed in the Temple, they looked at each other, then at us, and did the whole "What, with him?!?"/"What, with her?!?" thing. They told us, in front of each other, that they were perfectly happy to just be married for this life, and then part as friends at death. My companion and I were dumbfounded, and while we wanted them to get sealed, we didn't want to push them into it. We prayed about it, and felt that yes, we shouldn't push them, but that instead we should encourage them to read the Book of Mormon every day, both individually and as a family. We decided to put Marion G. Romney's promise to the test (if you don't know what that is, look it up; this comment is already way too long!). This couple told us that they hadn't been reading the scriptures at all, but that they would start immediately! Only about 2 weeks later, they had us over for dinner, and I noticed several things: the couple sat next to each other on the couch with their arms around each other, they were much more respectful to each other and their kids, their kids seemed much happier overall, and there was a new "Families Are Forever" plaque on the wall in their kitchen. We asked them how their Book of Mormon reading was going, and they all said excitedly that it was going perfectly; it was even hard to stop sometimes! Then, as we were leaving, they said, "Oh, remember what we said about never wanting to get sealed? Well, we've changed our minds... and we have an appointment with the Bishop this Sunday to get us all ready for going to the Temple." Well, the *tl,dr* is: If you can get sealed in the Temple, do it. If you can but just don't want to, read the Book of Mormon, especially with your significant other. That'll take care of everything.

According to scripture that would qualify you for a hand picted spouse from God at some point in the second coming also until that point your sealed to your closest priesthood family aka your parents if born under the covenant but everyone will be sealed in the second coming so even those unsealed will but how I read it if loose aka unsealed you maybe adopted into another family line within your tribe as we will be gathered in as the 12 tribes. But I haven't studied this in a while so sorry I don't know the source exactly.

My husband wasn’t active in The Church when we started dating. As we started talking the possibility of marriage I told him it was in the Temple or it wasn’t happening. He really didn’t have much to do to become worthy - give up coffee and his occasional beer. He decided I was worth those sacrifices so he went to our Bishop and they created a plan to have him worthy to take me to the Temple. We were married in the Saint George, Utah Temple 24 1/2 years ago. An added bonus of getting married in the Temple- when we had rough patches, especially in the beginning, the knowledge we had eternal covenants gave us more motivation work through our differences - and we can “renew” our “vows” anytime we want by doing work in the Temple

When I started dating my wife I did it all right, I met her at a church dance and got her phone number only to find out she was Catholic and planning to become nun. I continued on with life thinking there was no way that one would work but she kept sending me messages and finally I invited her to another church dance, and she showed up. Then she invited me to go with her to visit at a Catholic event where the Catholic bishop of Tonga was visiting in California. It was in Santa Clara and taking her home I deliberately took the wrong road and went up interstate 580 instead that meant we needed to travel through Oakland to get her home, which reminded me I needed to go visit that place I pointed up the hill to her and she said okay. It was the Oakland Temple, and I took her to the visitors' center and eventually she did get baptized, but we were in our thirties and so waiting another year longer would just mess up plans to have more kids. After some serious prayer, we got married in July 2010, she was baptized the March prior which meant we were going to the temple to do baptisms already, but she couldn't get her endowments. We were married at the stake center and fortunately everyone was very accommodating. My parents joined the church when I was three and we couldn't get my mom's family to our church for anything, but when we had our wedding my grandma who for her whole life was anti-Mormon and anti dancing showed up and since my wife is Tongan that meant a lot of dancing. Most of my family thought my grandma wouldn't like that but she loved it. She said the dancing was done in the church, so the Lord's Spirit was there. I realized that as a missionary we struggled to get people to just arrive that first time and we were really shutting the door in a way to one of the things most people would be willing to go to another church for, a friend or family member's wedding. In the early days of the Restoration Oliver Cowedery wrote that weddings should be public etc and we only changed that due to the sealing ordinance. But in other countries members had to be married civil before being sealed anyways which led to more people arriving for the wedding and feeling llike they were participating in more than just a sit outside an wait arrangement. Before our wedding we took pictures at the temple, and they even let us in the waiting area inside to sit and pray before going to the stake center. My wife was pregnant a month after we were married and she got her endowments out a year after being baptized and the stake president showed us the new rule that we didn't have to wait a year from our wedding to be sealed so we were sealed on Saturday May 14, 2011 and our oldest daughter was born Tuesday morning at 4 AM, so the temple was closed between the time we were sealed and she was born. A lot of what I followed was prayer and reading my patriarchal blessing, plus I had a bishop who married his wife before joining the church and he said "I'd never be your bishop if she would have just walked away because I wasn't a member".

@zzz6valvoline
@zzz6valvoline 5 лет назад
@@MsFitz134 yes... sort of. If you want to be married civilly by a special family member, then get sealed afterward by a random sealer, it's not possible. And if you get sealed first, then the family member can't perform the marriage because the sealing is considered legal by the state. This is policy, not doctrine. It would probably be good to update it, because right now it sends the wrong message. It is essentially 1 year punishment for getting married by a non member.

The question is, is it against the religion to get married outside of the church? and if marriage outside of the church happens, what are the spiritual consequences for that? and you have not answered that question and played around it.
@MsFitz134
@MsFitz134 5 лет назад
It's not against the religion, we are just encouraged (not required) to marry within the church. Even when you do marry in the church, your spouse might someday convert to a different faith. Interfaith marriages certainly can work, but couples who share a faith tend to be happier and more successful. This is especially true when you have children and might disagree about how to raise them. That being said there are several families in my ward who make interfaith marriages work. Spiritual consequences would be the possibility of not having spiritual support in your home, dealing with your kids choosing a different faith, and not being with your spouse in the afterlife.
@faya6974
@faya6974 5 лет назад
@@MsFitz134 Thank you for answering. Will the spouse be together in the after life?
@MsFitz134
@MsFitz134 5 лет назад
@@faya6974 According to Latter-day Saint belief, you will only be together with your spouse in the afterlife if you have been sealed in the temple. In order to be sealed while you are both living, you both need to be practicing members of the church. However, you can also be sealed to your spouse after they (or both of you) have died. Your spouse will still have to accept the Gospel and the sealing performed in their behalf, however. You can't "force" anyone into being married to you for eternity. For example, my husband's grandma married a great man who was never a practicing church member. After he passed, she was able to go to the temple alone to be sealed to him. If in the afterlife he has accepted this sealing (and we believe he has) they will be reunited when she dies. Just like we perform baptisms for the dead, we also perform sealings for the dead. This way nobody will be denied the opportunity.

If you read the old testament and get to understand it, you'll see that God values children and posterity *a lot* . Abraham's big promise was being a father of nations. David's perceived punishment from his adultery and murder was the death of the child as well as loss of his sealing blessings in the after-life. King Ahab (considered the most evil king of the northern kingdom) was punished by having all of his children die and thus having no offspring or "increase". There's more examples, both positive and negative. But in general, this tells me that purpose of Godhood is to have children and have _them_ increase in glory themselves. That's why this is reserved for the top level in the hierarchy of heaven. Sealing and marriage as a whole is the highest ordinance because it allows the binding of the generations, past, present and future and it sets you up for the one thing only exalted beings can do, allow others to become exalted themselves.

I don't understand the whole temple marriage thing. Who really wants to "rule & reign in the house of Israel" forever? Sounds so political and militant. That doesn't sound like a family sentiment. The thought of creating endless children and creations as if you're forever not satisfied with what you have or realizing that we have to walk around on marble floors barefooted and in togas and giving commands with a "return and report" to people who go visit earths, look around and come back with the news. ..looks so quirky and awkward. Reporting that the devil (your wayward son you had to expell from heaven) is there with his robes...ugh. How did they even decide what plants and animals they had to bring to this earth when Jesus and Adam were creating it? Where did they bring it here from? What about the dinosaurs? Can't ignore the proof they were here. It used to all make sense until I started "ponderizing" things. ..then it all unravels and makes no sense. Really. ... God lives on a planet closest to another planet called Kolob? Is that where they got all the plants and animals to put on this earth before they konked out Adam and put him on the earth nude in some grass? Then he wakes up all dazed with amnesia as to the fact he's now living on an earth he helped create by talking to the elements and they moved into place by a command? And why can't people get married on the other side if its so important? Seems like God would allow it. He allows it by proxy on earth (supposedly)....but not the real thing there?...unless you find yourself being one of those old maids who never marry and their bishops always weirdly assure them they will have that chance in the next life? Why does that work for them but not the handsome guy who had every girl after him on earth and never did marry. How do we know that just because he had his chance and didn't get married, now he's been relegated to some lower class kingdom? And then there's that new name thing. ..where everyone going through the temple that day for the first time, gets the same new name. It's hilarious. Most of the men's new names are Biblical sounding yet the wives, ....they get to have unpopular pioneer women names. It's all weird.

"I think marriage was invented to make us better....some people seek solace in relationships and stuff but be better than that." I don't think marriage is a better choice than solitude. I'm married because I was married before I was saved and because I am prob too weak not to be but I tend to agree with Paul that anyone who is able, should remain unmarried so as not to divide their love for the Lord. How does the LDS address that? It seems they promote marriage and lots of kids as God's plan for everyone but each new family member you create divides your love.

As I have loved you love oneanother. And there's another scripture that I can't remember well, but basically it says that when you love others you are actually loving the lord, or when you serve others you are serving God. So no, your love is not devided when you marry and have children. It grows. You learn how to truly love. And that's what the gospel is all about.

@@shirlettebrown929 Thanks for your reply. Its an interesting philosophy based on love and one I can respect others living and embracing. Personally, I tend to agree with Paul in 1 Cor 7 where he says that you should remain unmarried if you were saved when unmarried. He goes on to say that one who is unmarried is concerned with pleasing the Lord while one who is married is concerned with the things of the world and pleasing their spouse. But again, even he acknowledges that it is him speaking not the Lord and not as a command but as advice for living wholly for God. Also, I don't see that the command to love one another as Christ loved us is related to marriage at all much less completed by it or somehow unable to be obtained without it. Surely, we don't have to marry someone to love others as we should? Ultimately, I think most people would agree that if you feel led to marry, then you should and if not, then you shouldn't. Both are legitimate ways of serving the Lord. And if we agree with that, then there is a problem with promoting one path over another, especially the path that Paul says makes us less focused on God.

@@Mine4062 ok, I understand your perspective. But, fun fact...marrying and loving your spouse and family is actually a form of worship. 😀

@@shirlettebrown929 That is true. And if it brings you closer to God to do so, that's an awesome and praiseworthy thing! Solitude and celibacy are also a form of worship.

The answer is simple: no. If you’re a member and they’re not, you should not be married. You should be equally yolked in the faith.

@AKS I agree with you. For one thing, there are a lot more single LDS women wishing to be married than there are LDS men active and willing to commit. If these women who can't find LDS husbands are able to find compatible non-LDS with whom they can be happy and raise a family together with, then it sounds like a win-win to me. Life doesn't play out perfectly; we have to take the opportunities that come our way.

There is another simple answer: yes. If you're a member and they're not, it is allowed. Trust in the Lord.

If you marry a non member and they never join the church, it will impede your eternal progress. It's so much easier when you have the same beliefs and goals.

BOY! What a different 'Gospel' than the one I and my mom and my grandmother and my great grandmother etc grew up in. So is this doctrine? Or should I...'go to God' for that? Or only Nelson? Or Spencer W Kimball? So if you get a temple marriage, At some point..... Aren't we all family? Or will it just be me and my kids and what if they want to move out in heaven? OMG! Everything I worked so hard for on Earth would be gone! Ok I jest. But how many great greats and how many 3rd 4th 5th cousins are going to be 'together forever?'* *Terms and conditions apply.

The divorce rate among married temple recommend holders is one of the lowest in the world. One study put it at 5%. That means a 95% chance of being happily married for all eternity. Works for us.

@AKS When you are married in the temple your perspective changes from 'til death do you part' to 'married for time and eternity'. It's more the reason to remain faithful and fall more deeply in love with my wife when considering eternal consequences. When a person who is married in the temple, gets a civil divorce, they are no longer married for time and eternity.

@AKS I wonder why she would be counselled to retain the sealing until she remarries? IMHO it would be creepy to be sealed to someone whom you have divorced.
@hanna9164
@hanna9164 4 года назад
Wait no, being married doesn't always equal being happily married. Of course, people who go through all the planning and thoughts of getting sealed at the temple probably put more thought into it than those who marry someone in Vegas they just met and that may result in lower divorce rates and happier relationships. Another factor is, however, that it is socially just not as accepted to divorce in most religious societies. So even if someone is unhappy in a relationship, they might stay just because they don't want to go through a divorce (sometimes for social/religious reasons, sometimes financial).
