People just don't like Taylor Swift so they will find every reason to flip this situation on her but fact of the matter is, she is correct. She SHOULD have the opportunity to buy back her masters. Every artist should. This is bs.
I just don’t get why artists don’t demand the rights to their masters before they sign a deal. I guess talent alone isn’t enough to make it in the industry
@@ThePvPBros1 If it's 2021 and you still don't get why this happens, you need to do a lot more research than watching Anthonys channel. It's been long documented why certain practices in the music business persist, and in this particular case, Taylor was a child. She didn't even sign her own deal nor was she able to be at some arbitrary negotiating table (which actually doesn't exist.) And yes, talent alone is not enough to make it in the music industry. That's been pretty much exposed in its entirety for decades. If you did a bit of the research I mentioned before, you'd know that by now.
@@allelitememesaem3916 hi so this might be kind of weird but I’m kind of writing a story where my protagonist (a music artist) is at one point in the story kind of in a similar situation as Taylor was here (like he was making music as young as 15 for other artists and got some of his material stolen and he is currently unable to profit off of it as an adult) and you seem to know much more than i do about the music industry and stuff (I am just 16 after all btw) where can I find more info about contracts and masters and all that stuff works also my first language isn’t English sos sorry about that lol :p
It's always a choice. Given what ressources and leverage you can find. Do you prefer 2% of 10 millions. Or 60% of 500 thousand. If you choose to swim with the sharks you know you might get bitten. If you choose to build your own boat you know there are going to be a couple of hard storms.
@Mayan Ruins who? Taylor is the biggest musician on the planet. What are you even talking about? Actually, save it, you're just gonna make yourself look dumber
@@jasp9661 she is, amount of social media influence and fan dedication making her chart, the fact the media watches her next move, she is the biggest female musician out there today.
"I think.... uhhh.. tyler schwifty... uhh.. she's a good singer. and i think that she should uhh... get another boyfriend again and hope she feels better"
MoonlightBae “I get X but saying Y went a little too far” is a meme in the comments section of the channel, Anthony didn’t actually say this. The more you know
Esosa Osagie I’m not 100% sure but I wouldn’t be surprised. I was just going off of how Melon said that in basically every contract, it states that you don’t own the rights to your music.
I seriously think this is why people have gravitated towards indie artists/rappers/bands so much (and I think to an extent movies). These studios produce highly polished and very produced products but it ends up being something the artist didn't have 100% control over. No matter how much you like or dislike Taylor Swift, there is no denying that her label restricts some of the things she can say/do and her musical output. Indie artists have the worry of not making money, being promoted, or being famous, but they still have their artistic integrity. What's happening to Taylor Swift is a classic case of what happens when an artist gives up their music. She may be one of the biggest pop stars of this era but even she is still under someone's boot and it's a pretty scary thing to realize.
@@kuwabaragriffin5429 I don't necessarily feel bad for her either, but it's just a creepy thing to realize that you can have hundreds of millions of dollars but someone still owns you. You can have so much money in the music industry but you end up giving so much of your own freedom away for it.
It's too bad she's since become completely artistically autonomous and independent, re-recording old albums as well as releasing 2 surprise indie-folk-alt albums :)
Hot take: You do not stand with Taylor because you argue her situation isn't unique, but if it had happened to one of your favourite artists you'd be championing their cause. Love you Waifuni Bonjourno
Nahh this is just a biased assumption which is more likely wrong as we have seen him not giving special treatment to his favorite. It might apply for some people on the internet tho so Where the hot take?
What’s obnoxious about this situation in my opinion at least is other celebrities coming in to weigh in on this situation. It’s hard to be sympathetic with people who seem to be giving their two cents for the sole reason of self promotion
Exactly! I appreciate that Taylor is attempting to help new artists be more careful with their contracts, but the fact that she literally ends her statement with “This is not what is happening with my new album Lover, coming out August 23rd” doesn’t sit well with me. Besides that, her statement is emotionally corrupted, it feels slightly manipulative.
From what I've seen on twitter I don't blame certain people for weighing in on the situation Because twitter is getting pissed that more of her friends aren't getting involved. They're already calling the men sexist and any man that's her friend that doesn't publicly speak on it is the problem. Twitter is being toxic as usual.
I'm going to have to disagree, Melon. Taylor Swift does not have the "best teets in the game" . I'm not sure what that added to the conversation but you said it, and I'm here to disagree
“That’s the way it is” isn’t a good reason to not sympathise with someone’s situation. Just because it happens to artists all the time and Taylor is just one of those artists doesn’t mean it matters less. If anything that makes it worse, this happens all the time, we should be angry at that. Artists should own their own music, it’s their music. With how high-profile Taylor Swift is, she could be the ‘poster girl’ for change in this aspect if people would get behind her on this issue instead of saying things like “oh that’s just how it is, this happens all the time, most major labels own the rights to the artist’s music”. Yes this happens all the time - does that mean we should just ignore it? Leave it as is? Or should we be glad Taylor is calling attention to it, and support her *and all the other artists* dealing with the same issue? Don’t understand the “that’s the way it is for many people so I don’t feel bad for Taylor” argument. Feel bad for, be angry for, be supportive of, all artists not owning their own music, including Taylor Swift
Mayan Ruins are you dumb??? taylor knew he was going to sell her masters. she didn’t know it would be to scooter braun. she wanted to buy her masters but wasn’t given the chance. scott refused unless she gave him one new album for one old one or if she signed a new contract with them so scott could make more off his record label. comprehension is key
well it wasn't just her labor was it, it was someone else's capital and someone else's both musical and music industry knowledge that made taylor swift happen
She wanted to buy her masters and they wouldn’t let her. Just basically gave her the option to be held hostage and eventually get them back. In 10 years. She also literally made the label from nothing. She was Scott’s first artist and fought every step of the way to make her art the way she wanted. He didn’t even want her to release 1989 lol. Just saying.
Standards? Maybe it's a time to change these standars? Taylor is not the first who want own her rights. Before whole situation were: Prince, Paul McCartney...
Anthony. I'm always interested in your opinion on these music related stories. You bring an allround view to most stories and critique them in, what seems like, an unselfish and genuine matter, which I admire. In some cases like this one, you have a tendency to use a specific negative tone of voice, before even getting to your fleshed out opinion, which most viewers can deduct your opinion from. Which I think is unfortunate, as you have a very in depth perspective on these stories, I think some viewers rob themselves of a nuanced opinion piece, because they think can deduct your opinion, based by hearing your tone of voice alone. It's something to consider. Thank you for creating great content.
This whole thing reeks of some kind of dominance power move, this guy harasses Taylor by putting a naked image of her in a music video and then buys the rights to her whole life work up to that point, it really feels like he's trying to take as much control over her as possible, like "I own you now" kinda thing. I wouldn't wanna be Taylor in this situation, this sounds dreadful.
She should of left Kim and Kanye out of it. She was caught out in a lie, and everything is filmed during Kanye album process, His wife is a reality tv star whose life is filmed. The call being recorded, is no suprise and it is good they did. People would have believed there was no call at all, and she was never heard knew and heard anything about the song. The Famous video, was using wax models, and was a social commentary on fame. It was based on the painting Sleep by Vincent Desiderio. Who praised it himself.
Ben E. You can’t exactly make an overall judgment of someone’s music by only listening to singles that are made to attract the GP and chart well. It’s common sense :)
I would have to agree with Fantano here. My fave track of Bandana is Practice but there are lots of great ones. Production on the album is top notch as always. Great review.
This guy Scooter's m.o. seems to be trolling the hell out of a privileged rich celebrity which is ethically questionable and not very professional, but kinda funny.
@@evanmerwin7979 for what tho? Kim kanye situation? Proven lies abt recording. Catalog? Also proven lies abt scooter. Her music? Girl basically talk abt a lot of different things than her stereotype 'break up songs'. Certainly you never did a research on her and now you just look ignorant
So my issue with what you’re saying is that this whole it is what it is just deal with it situation is just not what people should be doing. Change happens when you expose the unfairness of how things are happening. I don’t see anything wrong with her saying what’s wrong with the situation
The only leverage Taylor has for sympathy exposes the exact reason why we shouldn't sympathise with her. "My daddy signed my masters away when he got me signed as the youngest artist ever on my label" isn't really the humble career beginnings she wants to portray, so she muddies the narrative by incorporating the Kanye story and by mentioning other artists. Just another example in a rich history of Taylor Swift emotionally manipulating her fans by portraying herself as a victim.
Yes Prince was saying the same thing Twenty years ago about being a slave to the label by not owning your masters. It sucks but it’s the music industry.
I feel like people are intentionally missing the point of this just because they hate Taylor Swift. She was 15 when she signed the contract and she didn't know if she would become successful. The point is that the music industry shouldn't be able to take advantage of people with big dreams. This is not ok.
I mean, to an extent, it goes both ways. The label doesn’t know she’s gonna be huge when they are willing to pay to produce her records at 15. For every Taylor Swift, there are a dozen, or more, other artists they paid for production, marketing, etc…that didn’t pan out. I still think the idea of not being given an opportunity to buy your masters is BS, and Taylor was done wrong in that regard.
Honestly, the really depressing thing here is, if this is how the music industry treats one of its most successful and profitable artists, imagine how it is for everybody else.
Image comics formed in the 90s when writers and artists got fed up with not owning their own characters/property. I hope the music industry finds a way to do something similar.
Thank you!!!! Some of the tweets I've seen are laughable, saying this happened because she was a woman and scooter is a white man and that this would never happen to someone like Ed sheeran or shawn mendes, do people think shawn mendes owns his masters lmaoo, Taylor put out a manipulative tumblr post for her impressionable fans to soak up because she is annoyed scooter bought her masters not that they were bought in general. (excellent business move by scooter BTW)
Rory you are exactly right. If the roles were reversed here and it was a white man against a woman or another man, they wouldn’t stand a chance in the Court of Public Opinion ™
Scooter might have made a good business move, but that doesnt mean it's morally right. You can disagree with taylor, but scooter definitely shows the shady side of the industry.
I agree with you in that Taylor should've gotten an opportunity to buy her masters back. And why I wouldn't go further than that is because, Taylor left Big Machine knowing that and fully accepting the fact that she would have to put her past in the past, leave her masters behind and start anew since she is now able to own everything she releases under Republic. Taylor should try and get ownership of her masters but at the moment, the focus should be for her new album that's coming out soon. Right now, I feel this is just getting messier as time goes by.
Honestly, i'm glad she opened up about this stuff on social media....cause people even though are aware of all the shady stuff that goes on behind the scenes of the american music industry...not many give a fuck....taylor speaking out about her situation has brought a lot of attention to artists in general who go through the same situation.
@@otterhero6229 it's because she's not well liked. Kanye is actually going through a similar struggle but from what I see he's getting a lot more support comments than "it's your fault" comments. He's loved online so it's just how it'll go. Taylor isn't getting the same support because she has a bad reputation: a poor reputation means you're always wrong to some degree, regardless of the situation
@@otterhero6229 I think Taylor is just unlikeable, she comes across as disingenuous and calculated, Kanye comes across as an unstable mess but he seems genuine. If Adele went through this she would receive a ton of support and she is a woman so... idk
I know she keeps bringing up the Kanye incident and I'm not a Taylor fan but i do empathize with her because she seems to really feel violated by that Famous music video
@@hehhdeg3327 of course you will try to move on, and for the most part you do. Bad shit has happened in my life and I don't think about it 24/7, but it hasn't stopped having an effect on me. Setting an imaginary deadline for how long you can be a victim is just cruel and inconsiderate.
