It's just so funny that when the artist that Jack produced made a bad album Jack is the one to blame. I remember soooo many Lorde stans blaming Jack for "ruining Solar Power", as if he didn't help making Melodrama AKA the holy bible of Lorde's discography

yeah because it turns out a lot of fans of pop artists such as taylor swift, lana, and clairo actually have no taste so as soon as these artists go in a more nuanced direction production wise (see: sling, norman fucking rockwell, etc.) and start making another kind of music that they also clearly want to make, these "die hard fans" suddenly think the music sucks. the issue isn't jack, the issue is artists evolving past the shortsighted taste of their dumbfuck fanbases. I've been a Clairo fan since she blew up with Pretty Girl and had always hoped she would come into her own artistically and start making some really special music, and Sling ended up delivering that and being my favourite album of 2021. A lot of average Clairo "fans" hate Sling because they have no taste and the only reason they liked Clairo's early work was either because it was on vogue at the time or because it was catchy. I can't believe I'm saying this but they didn't actually "get" Clairo's music in the first place. Same thing with Lana and Taylor and Lorde and whoever else. Just my take

Casual listener here. Actually, I have listened to Midnights (and a lot of her recent albums), and watched a lot of reaction/review videos on Midnights and so far, a lot of people have been liking it. Particularly those coming from producers or people involved in music production in some ways who react to it, to which I agree. A lot of them say that while the songs may not be for everyone due to the sparse production. I mean, you can't expect people to like all of them right? But they all agree that it is such a cohesive album from front to back, and the aim is to create somewhat atmospheric soundscape, which I think is what Taylor might want to achieve with these songs, and explains why some of the 3am tracks were not included as part of the tracklist of the main album. I can understand that the writing may not be similar to the poetic nuance of FolkMore, Red etc. But such writing was so fitting for that kind of sound, and Midnights is truly a pop album so she bends her storytelling, Nashville-style of writing that she has honed so much over the years before totally going pop to that pop mould, or the kind of pop she envisions for herself, which in the end shows her versatility to write and adapt to a lot of different sounds. At least that's how I see it and what I think she tries to achieve in all her pop albums. I do have a few songs that just I wasn't gravitated towards on Midnights, mainly due to preferences. But, I truly think it has done a wonderful job at creating cohesiveness throughout. I knew from the first listened of the 3am edition, that the reaction would be polarizing for the main album (which it did happened), and some people would probably love 3am tracks more (which they did). I love those 3am tracks as well, and some of her best writings are there and I somehow understand why they were not included in the main tracklist. Putting critics score aside, this album has to be listened to with an open heart, mind and ear, and then decide whether you like it or not. This applies to other artistes with their respective albums as well. I can't say the same for those who may already have disdain towards the artistes and simply do not wish to give it a listen just because they hate them. To each their own. I can't help with that. But, I do agree that some people think that it is going to be a grower kind of album, and not instantaneous. I guess a lot of people expect head-on-the-wall bangers to listen to while having a lot of thoughts and doing some pondering alone in the middle of the night, which is totally fine.

I honestly think the critique (although harsh) is fair. It's not that people think he sucks I just think these pop acts need to mix in other producers into these albums.

I'm not a Jack hater by any means, but I think that Taylor's collaborations with Aaron Dessner just clicked for people in a way that might make her Jack songs just seem a little disappointing. This isn't a 1:1 thing, but for me Aaron's music taps into a pretty emotional vein, and Jack is more about atmosphere and vibes. Neither is worse or better (and his stellar production on tracks like All Too Well 10MV and This is Me Trying proves Jack can make moving pieces of music with Taylor, but he mostly does the bops), it's just that Taylor fans historically tend to value getting into their feelings over grooving to a sick beat. My top 3 Midnights songs are all Aaron bonus tracks, and I'd take an album of High Infidelity and Would've, Could've, Should've over an album of Midnight Rain and Bejeweled (neither of which are bad songs! Just not really my kind of thing) any day. So I suspect this noticeable difference between her two favorite producers has some people who are more aligned with my tastes to feel like if she weren't working with Jack, she'd be producing more of the Aaron stuff they like more.
