Alexander Matias Why would you want to split a bolt? They are usually screwed into a blind hole and all you can see of it is the bolt head. If you break the bolt head, then you can't get the bolt out without drilling it or welding a nut on what's left in order to remove it with a wrench.

Yes the threads are possibly damaged as a result but it is easy to run a die to renew the threads. There are many times that this tool could be of major help. The nuts in the video dont appear to be overly bad but he is just demonstrating the use of this tool. Pretty neat i've been working on cars for years i don't think i've ever seen this tool hahaha.

acalora123 you use a ball joint separator with something like wd40. Tap the thread or bolt with a hammer a few times to crack the rust and let the fluid in. Then with the ball joint spliter/spreader/separator in place or just a pri-bar the pressure stops the track Rod end or ball joint from spinning and off it comes. Nice to see these things work tho

Looking through the comments, I see a lot of people talking about how he hit the tie rod end and it messed up the threads. Clearly you didn't see the boots on them and plus he was replacing the tie rods anyways. Why else take them off unless you're removing the knuckle in which I'm sure he'd use a different method.

@greatnortherntroll6841
@greatnortherntroll6841 7 лет назад
Uwe Sanz If you drive the splitter too deep AFTER the nut splits, you can damage your threads, but generally the nut splits a bit before the thhreads get damaged. You should notice the tension on the splitter suddenly easing off at the moment the nut breaks apart. That's when you STOP turning the pressure screw!
@baklap141
@baklap141 6 лет назад
But you can screw up the thread by knocking it loose with your hammer like you did. After you broke the nut once you need to do it again 180 degree turned and it will fall right off.
@ThatGuy-nv5kz
@ThatGuy-nv5kz 6 лет назад
Great question! Just about to ask this myself
@holton345
@holton345 7 лет назад
You were pretty fortunate that this worked. Usually the back side of the splitter snaps in half. The nut stays firmly in place and the tool is ruined. I have used these about a dozen times and have never had one that did not break. Perhaps the hardware used on my Jeep's suspension is all Grade 8 (or metric 10.9) and is too hard for these cheap tools. Grade 5 (metric 8.8, which is probably what was used on the two nuts in this video).
@DonnieDarko1
@DonnieDarko1 7 лет назад
Holton 345 yep. mostly a waste of money, maybe the higher end ones may yield better results but I doubt it. Even the tiny screw on the side of the nut splitter can easily break off on the middle of the torque process or while you're at near end of torquing down in a real tight area, the splitter will just keep sliding off to the weakest side and prolong the misery. they are a useful tool but in very limited applications. Best to hang on to your vise grips and keep your angle grinders handy.
@gaff205

If the outer tie rod end is bad it really does not matter. If it wasn’t bad before it is now so it still does not matter. Folks if your tie rod end is not bad, use a bit of penetrating oil and a wire brush to clean those threads. If you watch closely there is a allen wrench spot on the end of the stud. Get the nut broke loose then the impact he had should remove the nut. A tie rod separator will pop it out.
@fox10169
@fox10169 6 лет назад
Coy Patton lmfaooo 9/10 that allen head strips out. And in the video he said "if your trying to save it, just use a bit of wood on the top" no need for that and it honestly is a bigger pain in the ass because the wood absorbs a lot of the impact, and can't get the full ass behind it. When you hit what it goes through all of that impact goes to the part. This is pretty basic knowledge in terms of mechanical work.
@cjoe42
@cjoe42 6 лет назад
Pretty tough talk for someone who doesn't know the spelling difference between "they're" and "their". The man said "if you're trying to save this, use a bit of wood on the front of it". He didn't use the wood, so clearly he doesn't plan to reuse the tie rod end. It doesn't matter if he used proper procedure to remove the refuse part. The video was about demonstrating if a nut breaker would work and he showed that it did. And what's this whole thing about him having a purse? Are you so insecure about your manhood that you need to go point out how unmanly you think everyone else is in an attempt to make yourself feel better?
@fox10169
