Hello, and welcome to the first session of Ask Kitten School! I thought it would be fun and informative to create a video series from the many questions I get from viewers.
Many people want to know how our six "resident" cats (these are our permanent kitties who we belong to) accept and deal with having so many foster kittens, and sometimes adult foster cats, in the same house.
Cats are really territorial, so unlike dogs, they are not quick to accept new cats who come into their space. In this video, I will discuss how I manage to keep the peace with my own six kitties while also indulging in my life's passion - fostering as many cats and kittens as I can!
Let me know if you have a question and post in the comments! Upcoming Ask Kitten School videos will be covering viewer-generated questions such as, "How do you pick up a hissing, scared cat?", "Why is my cat always licking me?", and "My old cat still HATES our new kitten - help!" among many others.
Thanks for watching and please be sure to subscribe so that you never miss a single Kitten School episode. Engaging with cat lovers around the world is one of my favorite things about being on RU-vid, and we'd love to have you as part of the Kitten School family!

With 40+ years of cat ownership under our belts, it's been my conclusion resident cats will accept kittens more readily than another adult. We always had kittens as the newcomer and they were accepted by the residents and even welcomed, in less than 24 hours. When we took in a stray adult for the first time 3 years ago I was surprised that, once again, our residents accepted him right away as one of the family but I think they had become accustomed to having him around out doors for 6 months before we brought him in. I toy with the idea of fostering once in a while. Maybe when I'm retired.

Oh, I asked Caroline (the Kitten School Lady... I got a Crush on the School Marm...) about the odds of getting a new Female to join my 4 Knucklehead Guys. Last couple of Adult Females I brought in DIDN'T work out. Do you think it might be true that Neutered Males might get along better with other Neutered Males, when introduced, than with Females, because, well, with all the Maternal Responsibility that Females have as INSTINCT, well, it sort of makes them a Pain in the Azz, doesn't it? where the Males just like to be Easy Going Guys. But the can tolerate a Kitten Female and then by the time she is an Adult, they are all used to Her Schitt.

I've heard horror stories about cats that are totally incompatible and will never get along. Two of our cats were returned to the local shelter because of this, although we had no problems introducing them to our cats. It's actually comical and quite entertaining watching them get used to each other, especially kittens. There's never any hostility, maybe just a little grumpiness or pouting for a while. Or maybe we've just been lucky? Can't say for sure.

Yes, I know there are certain instances when two cats just refuse to get along. Our white cat, Snowy, was adopted from me when she was about 6 months old. But she could never get along with the family's other cat, and the two made each other miserable, to the point that they were both losing fur and stressing themselves and everyone else out. So after a few months they asked to return her to me. I said of course, and Snowy never left our house again! She is pretty dominant and sometimes "boxes" with a couple of the other cats, but no major fights. Everyone seems to know their place in the hierarchy. It's just so interesting to see how cats interact, I am endlessly fascinated!!!

@@KittenSchool Thanks for the reply. I'm glad Snowy worked out. I've wanted a pure white cat my whole life but have never found one. I remember the litter of white kittens you had. If I weren't so far away (PA) I'd have taken one.

Yeah, incompatibility is my concern too. In just a few years I went from 7 cats to 4 and the deaths have all been with my Females, and now I think the house could use a little Feminine Energy but I'm worried about upsetting what now seems like a kind of Idyllic Harmony... marred only by a little Jealousy emanating from a very sweet cat to another one of my Cats who LAUGHS in his face and does what he likes. But, yeah, I would hate to bring some Irreconcilable Struggle into my peaceful happy home.

@@leovolont Fortunately, in 40 years of cat ownership, we've never had compatibility problems but we've always gotten kittens which I don't think intimidate the adult cats as much as another adult would. That's mentioned in this video. When we got our girl cat 2 years ago, to our surprise, two of our friendliest males had their noses out of joint for about a day, then they all became buds. At the time our female was unphased by all the big male cats. She just moved in and made herself at home. It's fun watching their antics as long as there's no hostility.

@@1940limited Good Morning Bridgman, Yeah, I saw how that Model Plays out, with the new Female Kitten moving in with a bunch of Toms... well, 3 Toms. But Franky, not even two years old yet, only hissed once and then got curious and sniffed noses with her right away. But Little Siamese Tommy, almost 4, and Big Bear Roary, at 8, well, their 'noses were outta joint". But she was totally non-phased by them and simply went about her business of exploring. I think she was the one initiating 'play' with everybody, who thought at first they were being attacked by some super dangerous little creature, but as soon as they realized that she was just 'tagging' them, and they could see that Franky was having FUN playing with her, well. the House came around. Really, there's been a lot of evolution in the social dynamics around here. Before Franky, Big Bear Roary had HATED Little Siamese Tommy for being a spoiled little Rescue Kitten, whom he NEVER wanted to play with. But Tommy wanted to play and so Roary felt plagued. Then Franky arrived and gave Tommy somebody to play with. That relieved Roary but he still wouldn't play with anybody. But NOW with little Gloria ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mdlb2GJRCYI.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iP-jc8sYp70.html ) Roary is playing. I think I saw the first time. Gloria walked up to Roary and that slapped his face and then ran into the next room, and Roary, without vocalizing in the lease, chased after her. Now, it's even affection. Yesterday I saw her nuzzle with Roary, leaving her scent on his muzzle and he wasn't complaining.

A very interesting video as always. Have you ever had any experience with a deaf kitten / cat? Many white cats are deaf and I'm interested in adopters' experience with them. I worked with deaf pupils/students before I became a pensioner. That's why I'd like to know more about that topic!
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Hi there! I have never had a deaf cat, and our white cat Snowy is not deaf nor are any of her three white brothers and sisters. We did have a deaf dog when I was little, he was part white German shepherd. So I guess the white coat/deafness gene might affect both cats and dogs? My mother had a blind cat and she did very well, except when someone moved furniture in the house.

My resident female cat isn't getting along with the foster kitten I got about 3 days ago. She refuses to sleep or just be inside anymore and is usually outside all of the time. She isn't negelected one bit but I don't know what to do about this.

Does your long haired cat have Maine Coon in her background?
@KittenSchool
@KittenSchool 2 года назад
Hi! That's Malou you're referring to. I have no idea what her ancestry is, but I'd be willing to bet there's a good dose of Maine Coon in her DNA. That, or Norwegian Forest Cat. Maybe someday I will have her take one of those cat DNA tests!!!

I have a 10week old kitten that got his first round of vaccines. 3 days later, he’s vomiting liquid and his appetite has seriously diminished. He’s still pretty active. I’m not sure if the lack of appetite is from the vaccine or because of the heat wave we’re having
