QUESTION: how do doctors figure out if a chronic illness is causing anxiety and depression or if the anxiety and depression is causing the symptoms that look like chronic illness?
@SugarandSarcasm

For me, it’s kind of both. They can be interrelated often, especially chronic pain issues.

@@SugarandSarcasmI had my “anxiety attacks” diagnosed in the emergency room. I walked in with a pretty fast heart rate and a “panic attack” that would not go away quickly. The triage nurse sent me right to ECG, no waiting in the waiting room at all, they were surprised that I just walked in. Apparently ten years of “panic attacks” and associated therapy was a pretty textbook case of A-fib. Metoprolol a couple of times a week cured my “anxiety”.

Good question! As someone who has had chronic pain for a decade now, I can say that originally I had mild to moderate anxiety, and as the years of pain continued my anxiety got worse and I got depression. It is absolutely a part of my condition. And mental pain makes the physical pain much worse. But doing all the things that help take the edge off anxiety and depression has improved my quality of life immensely and I want to say that where ever your physical health is at, you do have options. Do everything and anything that helps and don’t give up.

@@southcoastinventors6583 Depends upon whether youre going into pathology. Most pathologists come into med school from either an extensive forensics or a chem backround. In the case of the forensic pathologist, its an eight year degree plus residency all said and done. However its the exception to the rule. One strategy is to get your EMT-P /ACLS via NREMTP certifications - it can be enough to satisfy your premed requirements, and if youre particularly bright you can do it in as little as six to nine months in some flex programs which allow the student to proceed through the curriculum as quickly as theyd like. Some doctors have also used the approach comming to either med or vet med from zoology. And vet med is way tougher because you have more than one species to learn without mixing them up, plus all of the patients are mute.
@tylerthomas9123
@tylerthomas9123 Год назад
Doctor Mike! As the husband of a veterinarian (I learned a lot helping her study in vet school, btw), I would like to point out that, generally speaking, heart rate among mammals tends to have a negative correlation with mass. So, assuming Sasquatch is somewhat larger than the average human, the heart rate for such a creature would presumably be slightly lower than ours--perhaps, 50-90 bpm. Of course, there are exceptions to this, so who knows?! 😅

@@southcoastinventors6583 Hey. Afaik, what the individual above said applies, what I have heard is that your overall resumé is more important than what you majored in (research, jobs, recommendation letters and scores). Since I'm from the EU, I’m doing an undergraduate degree (i.e., 6 year program). To be honest, if you’re a Canadian or US citizen wanting to pursue medicine I would recommend doing an undergrad program in EU. Getting admitted here is easy. Only downside to that is that you as a US citizen will have to sit the USMLE 1+2 tests upon returning to the US (the courses here are recognized in the US as far as the diploma and course contents extend). Tuition is cheaper in EU and the programs are offered in english as well. Given that I’m a EU citizen myself I don’t have to worry about USMLE or MCAT, but there are people from the states studying in my class and as far as I am concerned, they seem to be getting along and doing just fine. Overall, the various universities are international and most people with the exception of locals communicate via english. The debt you leave with here is insignificant relative to what you might expect from a US university of doing 4 years of undergrad and then 4 years of med school. In terms of quality of education, most universities hold up to contemporary standards (facilities as well).

This is a good video because it shows the importance of actually going out into the world and making human connections in person. We can so easily trick ourselves into thinking the world is a so despotic and everyone is so selfish and apathetic by spending too much time only interacting with people online, but the real world is not like that, people are much friendlier and the world is much better in person when you go out. Great video and I hope it helps more people see that the world is a better place than it looks like it is online.

Growth spurts can be freaking crazy in when they occur. I was 5'10" in 7th grade and grew two more inches. My father was apparently 5'9" or so in his senior year of high school then randomly hit that growth spurt and reached 6'4". It's all just a roll of the dice.

The slang lets you understand the process of the conversation (what Dr. Mike's trying to say) and the big words impress upon you the factuality of what he is saying. Hey Doctor Mike!!! This video was very interesting. I love how you in teract with people. The energy you have is just amazing. You love to make people laugh. It shows how sociable you are. The world would be a better place if we had more people like you. Yeah, it’s true that the nurses in our hospitals don’t get thanked enough for what they do. It’s really important that we thank them for all the hard work they do to keep us safe and happy. You should upload more medical Q+A videos. They’re really informative and enjoyable to watch. As always, stay happy and healthy❤❤.

Yess! I absolutely love these curb side consults, and so glad they’re back! Not a medical question, but out of curiosity, what’s your favourite book of all time Doctor Mike?

On breathing exercises! My therapist specifically taught me combat breathing. It's used by soldiers to steady themselves in firefights. I don't remember the exact numbers but you breathe out for longer than you breathe in. So you would breathe in for say 4-5 seconds, and out for 7-8 seconds. Your body automatically slows your heart rate when breathing out and raises it when breathing in

Best way to slow your heart rate or stop it (a plus) is to just stop breathing too 👍

I was 4th generation living military when I joined up in 2004....I have never heard of nor utilized "combat breathing".....not saying the breathing technique isn't effective but it was never taught to us prior to deployment, during deployment or after deployment.

I was in the hospital with meningitis and orthostatic hypotension. Nurses are amazing, when I left the hospital I still wasn’t able to walk a lot. A couple weeks later I went back to drop off a sweet basket with different candies in it for them. They were so grateful and happy to see me walking even with a walker. As much discomfort as I was in, nurses made my stay much more pleasurable. I was so giddy on medication and I am thankful I had the nurses I did because they were willing to joke and laugh with me at myself and out up with me on my grumpy days. Thank you to all the nurses, you guys are amazing ❤
