Does My Boyfriend Just Want to BAPTIZE Me??!!

Kwaku, David, and Justin talk about dating a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (nicknamed the Mormon Church). Can LDS date outside of their religion? Or are they taught to avoid dating outside? And what are the host's opinions on the matter?
The hosts agree that dating outside of ones religion isn't wrong. It's okay to date whomever you believe is good for you, treats you with respect, and helps you become the best version of yourself. However, Kwaku emphasizes the necessity in maintaining your values in whatever relationship you're in. Don't let anyone compromise your values.
Also, the hosts discuss if "Mormons" who date "non-Mormons" just want to baptize their significant other. See the answers in the video!!
What do you think? Is it okay to date someone outside of your religion?

Isn't it a sad world where most people, so called ' adults' treat those who are wholesome and good as if they are inferior and something is wrong? Back in the days, 50's etc, this was a good thing being chaste, being good.... now it's frowned upon. Last days for sure. Keep being Good. Stay strong and true, no matter what religion.

Personally I think you should date within your faith because of the values that are instilled in your faith. My stance comes from watching my mother have two failed marriages and they always say the biggest reason was the values from church.
@supercalifragic1551

Which is why the church councils as such and has YSA wards. Nobody should date outside their faiths whatever that faith is, unless you're willing to learn and adopt the other's faith based on whoever has the firmer belief. Or in some cases, who has the fullest gospel. Might be bias in saying that but it's hard to see a reason for a lot of Christian faiths not to convert since it's the same faith, just expanded on with modern revelation and promise. A lot of Christian churches (The general ones yo use in every neighborhood in the South for example) are pretty cookie cutter and interchangeable from my perspective in learning about them.
@allieooop3923
@allieooop3923 5 лет назад
Who Knows No doubt we all tend to have our biases, myself definitely included. I would say the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints is not "the same faith, just expanded on with modern revelation and promise" because it doesn't teach the Trinity. For a person who understands the doctrine of the Trinity and its full implications, converting would require dropping all that to adopt a different understanding of the nature of God and story of salvation--it requires significant changes, not simply additions to existing beliefs. That's my take on it, anyway. Peace.

Allie Ooop - No doubt about it, there are some major differences between the different branches of Christianity. I'm going on the assumption that like me, your Roman Catholic. So much of what we believe as Catholics boggles the mind of people outside of our faith. I am not surprised that I can't grasp some of the beliefs of others. I was raised Catholic. I grew up in the North East and it wasnt until I moved down south that I met people of the more evangelical denominations. I had to educate myself in depth on aspects of Catholicism that I had taken for granted or be flattened like a pancake in a one sided discussion. I still have trouble grasping the trinity. I accept it, but I can't truly wrap my head around it. Same with Mary being born without sin. I believe it. I understand why it was important. But I cant explain how it happened. I was 35 when I learned that most if not all Protestant churches teach that Mary had a physical relationship with Joseph after Jesus was born. My initial response? Ick. 15 years later... still ick. But my Lutheran neighbor believes differently . My great grandfather was of a different faith than the rest of us. He told me we will all meet again in heaven and have a good laugh about how close or far each of us came to the actual truth. He believed that we were all carrying pieces of a greater puzzle. I have never forgotten that even thought I was only 11 when he died. I have often thought of his words and felt comforted.
@supercalifragic1551
@supercalifragic1551 5 лет назад
Sorry, perhaps sentence structure is confusing the meaning of that, Are you saying that the Church of Jesus Christ- - doesn't teach the Trinity or that others don't? Because that's a bit ridiculous, the trinity doesn't go a Sunday without reference in fact we have an extremely close tie with the trinity in understanding the roles of God the Father, Christ the Savior, and the Holy Ghost and how they are the Godhead. They're critical and fundamental values right next to the Atonement and Resurrection themselves. Edit: What's that about the concept of Mary being born without sin? It sounds interesting, since we believe that everyone is born without sin. You don't become accountable until 8, which is why we get baptized then (or whenever you convert if already past then).
@allieooop3923
@allieooop3923 5 лет назад
Who Knows I'm wondering if this is a situation where we are using different understandings of the word "Trinity". In my faith, the nature of God is set forth in the teachings of the Nicene Council. I'm referring to that as the "Trinity". From what I've learned about your faith, this is not your understanding of God. Please correct me if you believe that is an unfair assessment. I'm also going by what my church teaches though. Those converting to Catholicism who have received a baptism using the Trinitarian formula do not need another baptism; the first one counts. Those converting from your church would need to be baptized. According to the Catholic Church, the words used at your baptism (even though similar/the same?) do not share the same Trinitarian meaning. About Mary being sinless...in my religion, she is one of four born without "original sin". The others are Adam, Eve, and Jesus. I should emphasize that Mary (like Adam and Eve) needed the Savior (Jesus). She was saved PRIOR to her birth through the atonement (since the sacrifice of Jesus was not confined to space and time), so that makes her unique and able to live a sinless life, but only through Jesus' saving grace. I think the word "sin" in "original sin" confuses people, because nobody is born having committed any personal sins and little ones cannot be held accountable until they knowingly do wrong. "Original sin" refers to the fallen nature of humans. When babies/little ones are baptized it is not to forgive their non-existent personal sins. It is about, among other things, restoring them to right relationship with God--just like Adam and Eve had before the Fall. I hope that made sense, at least a little bit anyway. All the best to you!

This subject came up in my Gospel Principles class when I was investigating the church. All I could think was " I wouldn't even be here if it weren't for my boyfriend , who is a member! " I saw the peace in his life and I wanted to learn more about it. I had a master's degree in theology and a doctorate in ministry from the local seminary but I was still searching for something more and my boyfriend, Mark, seemed to have found that in his faith. I began studying with the sister missionaries and attending church. As I heard the older members of the church agree that people shouldn't date outside the church, I was staring at Mark like a deer in the headlights. Mark pointed out that he wouldn't be a member of the church if his first wife hadn't decided to date outside the church. Folks in class got kind of quiet. A month later I was baptized and confirmed into the church. Six weeks after that Mark and I were married . I kept in touch with my sister missionaries and after they returned home, Mark and I traveled from Albany, GA to Provo, UT to see them and meet their families. While we were there in September, they were able to go with me to the Provo City Center Temple for my endowment. It was awesome! I am so happy that my husband was secure enough in his beliefs to date outside his church. His strong testimony helped me to find the Restored Gospel and it answered all my questions and the temple has made everything fall into place.....there are no more empty pieces in my heart.

I'm investigating the church currently and have always lived a sexually pure life. Its so hard to find men that aren't in the church that are willing to wait until marriage. I think it's so great that people of the LDS faith really live the gospel and respect themselves, their bodies and Jesus Christ. Hopefully more men take a page from all your books.

Zoe A. That's so awesome Zoe that you think that way, especially as the standards of our world continue to erode at an ever increasing rate. It's wonderful and a great blessing to have a literal "Father in Heaven" who has given us these standards so that we can be truly happy and joyful. I heard recently someone say: "our bodies are 'temples' and not meant to be 'playgrounds' before marriage. It is so true! Cudo's to your parents for rearing you and instilling those values. You are what I would call a: "Diamond in the rough." Keeping ourselves pure in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a must goal for both men and women throughout ALL of our lives. It is the way of our Savior...always has and always will be. God bless you in your journey young lady!

I was terrified of dating my now husband. I was pretty adament his faith was wrong and I didn't want to get involved. From the beginning of us dating I asked him so many questions about the church. I basically told him I would never convert and he was totally okay with that. We got married I began meeting with missionaries and going to church and now I am working on finding a baptismal date, which he has never pressured me to do. Dwayne, I totally agree. If a girl isn't interested and knows she's not interested and doesn't see any chance of it going anywhere, then I totally support her saying "no" to a first date. Facing rejection is better than being led on, and _then_ facing rejection haha. If she says yes to a second date, I still can't promise they're interested, but it's a _much_ safer assumption to make after the second date than it is after the first. You just never know haha. I think a lot of the time it takes them a few dates to figure out their own feelings.

I happen to find a situation in my life pretty amusing. Ok...so, we are Catholic but my kid is a celiac and is unable to fully participate in some aspects of Catholicism such as Communion. Shes always been open to exploring other faiths and has a strict personal moral foundation. As she was looking at colleges, she put BYU on the list of places to look at. She likes the emphasis on moral character, no booze, no sex. Very positive things. She approves strongly. The look of horror on her face when she found out LDS church members refrain from coffee was priceless. I'm watching her attempt to nix her morning habbit with mixed results. She figures it wouldn't apply to her, but she doesn't want to make a future roommate uncomfortable.

Christine S Super sweet that she's already taking into account the feelings of her potential future roomie. Kicking caffeine is not easy! So, it sounds like she cannot tolerate the very low-gluten host at Mass? The priest should really consecrate wine for her to receive, even if your church doesn't ordinarily offer both species to the entire congregation. I know you didn't ask, but I guess I sort of have strong opinions about this; she shouldn't have to go without Communion--it's spiritual nourishment after all! Anyway, best of luck in finding the right fit for college where she can be surrounded by lots of wholesome students!

@@allieooop3923 - That is correct. She gets massive stomavh pain and throws up when exposed to gluten. Shes been a celiac since 4. I'd say she gets sick from accidental exposure about 1x a year. It is possible that the low gluten host available at Mass is low enough that she won't get sick, but she is understandably worried about vomiting the body of Christ. While I seriously doubt that the same God who made her a celiac would lack understanding over a reaction over which she has no control... well, I don't blame her. I've thought about contacting the exceedingly small American Catholic church and the Episcopal church, both of which allow a completely gluten free host, but it somehow doesn't feel like the right choice. My own personal bias? Quite possibly. 1 in 100 people are celiacs, supposedly. I don't understand why the Catholic church has decided that only hosts containing wheat can be concentrated. Its silly. They do offer the wine. Our priest never indicated that it was an option... but I can ask. Thank you for the sugestion!

@@SaintsUnscripted - Its a good school with a good reputation. Shes taken some classes from the BYU independent highschool. I have never seen a better language program. I was not as happy with the math class but overall it was a solid program. The credits transferred with no issues to her regular highschool and it freed up her schedule to take some electives she wanted this fall . BYU us in a part of the country with a lot of natural beauty. Zion and Bryce National parks... well, I can't blame her. We need to do a little more research and make sure that it's a good choice for her intended major. As far as being comfortable with it.... this is her journey not mine. I'm here to guide and support her along the way. I trust her judgment. She will excel wherever she goes. I think it would be a unique experience. Not terribly thrilled with the distance from the east coast. Shes also in the jrotc which has turned out to be a blast. I have learned to expect the unexpected. True story: She picked BYU independent study for her summer classes kind of by accident but it turned out to be a good thing. She was about to pick the University of Texas but they sent her a broken pen and it was a deal breaker. She told me later that if they couldn't figure out how to mail a pen, they might mess up important things too. Kids often settle where they attend college. We are a close knit family. People who love each other, just do. You don't need a religion to tell you who you can or can't love. Love and Respect is ALL you need. My girl is a mormon, I'm an atheist, and she doesn't push her religion on me. Still, she believes in a god. And yes, we do love each other. This is the smartest move, because only rational, thinking, mature and inteligent people can be interested in another without thinking exactly the same way. And what if one of you guys, me, or anyone were gay? Leviticus 20:13 clearly states that gay people are to be put to death, just for loving another person.

Except if she really does believe in her religion, she believes you, and her, are never going to achieve their celestial potential and are in effect damned, and wont be together for eternity (or future/existing kids). Non mormons should not date mormons if they aren't open to learning the religion and adopting it, or move on if they don't want to or in the end decide not to after the honest attempt. That goes for ANY faith. Religion is one of the three core pillars of a relationship. Religion, Politics, and Sex. (Clarification: By sex I mean the couple's individual expectations and beliefs regarding it. Only the other two can damage a relationship as harshly if incompatible)
@brianivan.
@brianivan. 5 лет назад
She does believe in her religion. She does believe in a god. She's smart enough to accept people for who they are and not force them to be what she wants (or better said, what her religion wants people to be). If being damned feels so good, and lets me have this beautiful relationship with such an amazing, caring and special person. Then I rather be damned. Either way, I don't believe in achieving a "celestial potential" nor believe in an afterlife. There is no logical reason to believe so. What we have for certain is the NOW, and I plan on enjoying every single second of my life with her. No one can tell me, or another person who should we date or not. Not you, not pastor, elder, missionaries, the president, no one. Non mormons should definetely date mormons IF THEY WANT TO. Also the other way around. We are PERSONS after all.

A very self-serving and short sighted perspective. You're also essentially calling your wife an idiot for believing in these things, and if she doesn't then by her and likely her family standards, you're putting an end to her eternal progression "Because it feels good". Lots of things in life feel good, yet are wrong. Especially when you factor outright deviancy, arsonists for example taking pleasure in burning things. There is no worse feeling for a family than seeing their child or sibling fall away from the gospel, at least when accident strikes you can hope to see them in heaven. If they fall away there's the risk they wont even make it to the lowest afterlife depending on how hard they fell and how sour their spirit grew.

Who Knows -- Let's let Brian and his girlfriend make their own decisions instead of judging the value of their relationship in a RU-vid comments section. I can't think of hardly anything more effective at pushing people away from the gospel than handing out damnation cards online.

You say that, yet Brian is the one encouraging others to deviate from the doctrine and principles of the gospel his wife or girlfriend believes in, and here on this channel where most people follow or are looking into that same gospel (though about 1 fifth of comments seem to be of this variety, comments disparaging the church in subtle or less subtle ways). So no, it is not a good idea to leave his statements unchallenged for those who might read them. He's actively detracting.
