@@MichaelAndersen_DK Yes, this song is only the most meaningful of its original intend, is to a friend and not a boy friend or a lover. Cause the words says that both side in the story knows that each one is finally not for each other in life's endeavor. It make sense to me now after listen to Dolly that why would two lover love each other too much and would say they are not for each other, only music partner make sense.
I know.. They are both the same song.. but so different. And you can tell that Dolly was the writer. There is an authenticity in Dolly's voice. Dolly was singing it to a friend... (Or Ed Earl in the movie.) Whitney was singing it for another reason, which gives the listener a different meaning. Whitney was singing it as a love song.. They both hit SOOO differently.. but deeply!!
Dolly's is better,Whitney could not be doing that song today ,if she were still alive,it would be out of her range now,she struggled with it in 1999,imagine 21 years later, no way ,she set the bar so high vocally, that no one could be doing it in their late 50's ,early 60's,much like Steve Perry of Journey did,he vocally speaking, set the bar so high ,its impossible to sing in that register when you hit your 60's ,or older, he's 71,but its OK ,his legendary status remains just like Whitneys,
What's remarkable is that, even after Whitney ´s astonishing performance of this song, Dolly is still here to tell us the original story with her unique voice and genuine feeling. Isn't it beautiful how two great singers can honour a song differently?
Dolly Parton has a great story about the first time she heard Whitney's version. She had given permission to _The Bodyguard_ to use the song but didn't know they had. Whitney's epic version came on the car radio and it took her awhile to realize that it was her song! Dolly tells the whole story wonderfully as you would expect. It's on a RU-vid video somewhere.
@@Skywalker444 Much as I don't like the WH version (too overdone IMO), I hope you never have the misfortune to be addicted to anything. It's a disease, not a lifestyle choice.
Yes, Whitney's cover is powerful -- but you can just tell Dolly owns this song. She sings the real emotions because she lived it. I will forever love this performance. It's raw & soft & everything. I wish it had been released.
I know that Whitney owned this song and everyonce knows her version, but Dolly wrote it on her real life experience. You may say that Whitney's version is better, but it's still Dolly's song. This, ORIGINAL version is soft, sad and kind at the same time and it's beautiful.
+nicshe malik ... I think Dolly's version is better... Always have ... Not that Whitney's was bad or anything, but I like the twang in Dolly's voice and the passion in which she sings it ... So I beg to differ, I think Dolly own's this song, because she does..
Dolly Parton sang this song like Dolly Parton, and Whitney Houston sang it like Whitney Houston. Nobody messed up the song. It's called music folks. No one complains about who sings the ABC song better so no need to complain about who sings a love song better. Rest in peace!
Dolly song is a farewell to mentor song (it's not about romantic love). Foster (and Houston) took Linda Ronstadt's 1975 arrangement and and just played with the melody line. Dolly had to call to give David the final verse of the song - which Linda didn't included in her recording (when she heard that they were using Lindas' recording as a template). But in the movie the song is used, as a song, about romantic love....so there is a difference.
😂 probably country singer but she not even in the TOP 10 best vocalist of all time...Most ppl think this is Whitney Houston's song they forget about Dolly...Dolly get get paid for Whitney's version of her song
drummer703 and still Dolly sings as a dying sheep in live! I made the mistake to go to her concert and if i want to listen to dying sheep i will go to the field for no money! Whitney had the most feminine and natural voice!
obviusly Dolly wanted to be humbled, as we know her, she would not say, "the song is only mine" She would have rather say " It is her song" only a good person will say that!
Porter had done her wrong in many ways, yet she still had the heart of an angel seeing the best in him. Only from the heart of Dolly can a song like this be written about a situation like that. Only Dolly.
Porter tried to sue her and dolly gave him the money as porter was bankrupt. And when porter was ill in hospital dolly sat with him and his family and sang to them.
+GINGERbloodSUGARsex Dolly also does a better performance of her song than this one but i cannot find it any longer- i remember she is dressed in wihite and it is solo eventho she does several duets - maybe i'll run across it again one day-
Can you imagine writing, I will always love you and Jolene on the same night?! Dolly is definitely in the top ten songwriters of our lifetime. Long live this incredible legend.
Whitney's is tehnically perfect but hearing Dolly's you can't even think about the technique because it goes directly to your heart and I feel the pain behind the lyric.
They are not the same song, Dolly wrote the song about leaving her mentor. It's not about a romantic love, as used in the Bodyguard; and Houston version was taken from the brilliance of Linda Ronstadt's 1975 version.
Houston and Foster took Linda Ronstadt's arrangement - they just played with the melody line. When Dolly found out that they were using Linda's version as a template (for their recording), she called David to give him the final verse - which Linda did not use in her recording.
She and Loretta Lynn were married only once. And they're both fantastic people on a lot more ways than just singing. I can't get enough of either one of these two!
Jane no one can sing better than Whitney! Whitney had the most feminine and natural and powerful voice and everyone who says that Dolly with that voice of a dying goat( i've been to Dolly's concert and it is miracle that i'm not deaf) is just a racist or Dolly's fan! I can't take away from Dolly's songwriting skills but her voice is not even half good as Whitney's and everyone with ears will notice that!
This is maybe THE classiest lady alive, always considerate of others, always down to earth, always....I will always love this song, I will always love you, Dolly Parton : )' God bless!
Look 10- years old kid first of all Whitney Housten had the most feminine and natural and powerful voice and let's don't talk that someone who is not even alive should be respected! Dolly Parton sings as DYING SHEEP AND I MADE THE MISTAKE TO DOLLY'S CONCERT AND IT IS MIRACLE THAT I'M NOT DEAF! IF IO WANT TO LISTEN TO DYING SHEEP I WILL GO TO THE FIELD FOR NO MONEY!
Yes :) They sound amazing together and the episode where Dolly is on Bette´s TV show is really funny...I saw Dolly last year in Berlin and met Bette in London this July...they are both the best
MrReto2812 OMG i made the mistake to go to Dolly's concert and it was terrible! If i want to listen to dying sheep i will go to the field for no money! She is a great songwriter but her voice is terrible! Whitney had the most feminine and natural and powerful voice!
I always look to who wrote the song. This is where the soul of the song comes from. Dolly wrote this song and nobody could sing it better because no one else understands where the song came from. What I am amazed at is how many songs Dolly wrote. She has stood the test of time. A true legend.
This song was her freedom from someone, who knew the Value of this human, and refuse to let her go her way. The fact she allowed him to produce it speaks of a humane.
I saw Dolly perform live at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville a log time ago - AMAZING. She is also a GREAT human being- she's given millions to education and charities.
Dolly was my father's favorite singer and this is the version we played at his funeral on a loop with Elvis old rugged cross & amazing Grace and we all felt dad singing it with her❤️
Singers are entertainers. Songwriters are artists. That's why I will always prefer Dolly's versions of her own songs. Doesn't mean you have to, though. Whitney made the song iconic.
Words cannot describe how I feel every single time I hear this song the depth of love I have for my husband who passed 7 years ago and others I love dearly. Thank you Miss Dolly Parton. You are an amazingly wonderful talented woman with so many beautiful gifts. Thank you!! God bless you!! Kim… see you in the choir of heaven!!! Yippee!! What a hay day that’s going to be!! A day of rejoicing!!! YaHOO!!
I honestly don't know there needs to be comparisons. Dolly is a country singer. Whitney sung a completely different genre. They sing it in their own way, and that is just fine. There is no need to praise one person at the expense of another.
Oh my god I've never heard dolly's version before. Always so used to whitneys but oh my goodness tears came into my eyes as soon as she started so softly. So much emotion ❤️
I can't believe I shed tears listening to her singing this song, and at the same time thinking of my late dad and my late mother-in-law who just passed on. God bless your soul Dolly
❤ always was stunned about her sence of justice, her firm, real caring, proper approach and her timeless physical beauty she was seen and is seen as an attractive woman. Age is really just a number, for Dolly Parton (miss wonderful)
Dolly Forever! She is my all time favorite. I've been to Dollywood many times. I was VERY lucky that one of the times I went, she was there! She has apartment over a theme store there. She came out and talked and sang. I was right up front! I saw her up close! She is absolutely stunning!!
Kudos my role model ! You took the right decision Dolly, not everyone have the opportunity in finding there purpose in life, you are a woman that knows what you want, load's of Dolly.
Dolly, pound for pound, is, probably, the most successful female vocalist, of all time...Her list of successes, include, a ton of number one hit songs; 100 million albums sold, worldwide; has acted in some memorable movies, including, "Nine to Five" and "Steel Magnolias", and, as if, that, weren't enough, she created and owns something no other female vocalist has, namely, an amusement park - Dollywood.
I have loved this woman since I was a child. Daddy introduced us to her angelic voice. Its been over 45 years and Dolly Parton still makes me weep when she sings. God Bless her forever!
@@heartstrings7814 A National treasure, How perfect. Indeed she is. When I was little I would wish and pray and ask Santa to let me meet her to give her a hug. To hear her giggle in person. In my old age I'm content with hearing her sing. But oh to dream. 🤗🤗 Enjoy Heart Strings. And May you have a blessed NEW year 🙏🙏. Long Live Our Dear Dolly !!!!!
I’m a loyal fan of Dolly and have been listening to her music throughout the decades. Always and forever! She’s a beautiful person inside and outside, and a true master in music.
***** You're welcome, Nu. People often ask me who's version is better and for me, it depends on the time of day. Whitney and Dolly each bring a special «umph» to the table, so to speak.
This is great Terry. I didn't know any of that about her. I grew up with her music. My grandparents were huge fans of her. I feel like I am 10 years old again.
John Palmer Well, Mr Music, so many folks in the Country Music world are upset that Whitney gets all the credit and some people don't know that Dolly composed this song. Dolly brings a tender pathos to it. Whitney with her once magnificent voice before the drugs and her life with Bobby destroyed it, adorned it with operatic pyrotechnics. As I had said to Nu, each woman brings her specialty to the table. I like both versions, but I wanted Dolly Parton to receive her due as the originator of the song.
Terry Westbrook-Lienert I totally agree. Whitney's version was so huge that it has almost completely left the original largely forgotten. The percentage of the population of music lovers that even know that this was a Dolly Parton gem long before Whitney is probably fractional at best. Thank you for doing your part to remind everyone of the beautiful original as well as the beautiful re-imagining of the second incarnation of this tune.
I've always loved Dolly because my now passed Gramp and Gram played her all the time. Her version came on the radio when I was driving with my dad and I was crying. So beautiful
The Brilliance, of this song is the word LOVE can be translated into the different loves people have toward each other in many different ways, and this song supports all of those feelings, no matter who sings or hears it.
I first saw Dolly on the Porter Wagoner Show in 1967, I think, when I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. I was a guitar player from Ft. Lauderdale who loved rock, blues, & Beatles, Stones. Porter didn't do anything for me. But Dolly did and still does. She has always has been a true colossal talent, and a very sweet soul. Thank you Dolly for your wonderful music that has touched so many 💕.
Her voice is so cute and angelic, breathtakingly beautiful. Whitney (R.I.P) was good, but this is how it should be sung, it touches your feelings in your heart much more. Just connects and pulls on every emotional heartstring.
@@ophokeleonard5036 My pleasure. I had the good fortune to work with Dolly Parton as an actor in Hollywood, on her TV show, "Dolly", and she was a joy to behold. A very sweet, genuine lady. They don't make entertainers like her anymore. All best.
I started crying listening to this...Sometimes when you feel like giving up a song like this just really tears you apart. Love Dolly Parton, every single thing about her. Such a beautiful human being...
I believe the person who writes the song always sings it best because they are the one's who feel an emotional connection to that song. Whitney sang it well, but it doesn't come close to Dolly.
Sw499erB0iZ Whitney was just a singer, not a songwriter. She only co-wrote like two songs in her life. It'll always be Dolly's song. And no need to curse (=
Sw499erB0iZ I never said Dolly sang better. I just said she sings it with more emotions and it sounds really sweet. Whitney Huston is one of the greatest singers of all times. I didn't mean any disrespect towards her. Her cover was technically a lot better, no doubt about that.
We Love you too Dolly.... Been to Dollywood and loved it. Thank you for the years of great music........Saw you when you first came to South Africa at Sun City.......Bless you from me and South Africa
It is possible to love both versions, Whitney Houston had an unbelievable voice and dolly had such an original, raw talent for writing and singing, respect to both
True... they are (both) very beautiful women! I doubt Dolly could sing many of Whitney's songs as beautifully as Whitney did... but, I give this one to Dolly.
Two of the most talented female artists of all time. The rendition of Whitney's will always be legendary. The writing of Dolly, plus the composition of David Foster plus the voice of Whitney Houston = epic. It's amazing how a song like this and Jolene can be sang in so many different ways. They are both very simple songs lyrically but have lasted so many years. That's the mark of truly talented songwriting.
volcrazy89- you obviously don't know how the Foster and Houston recording came about. They basically stoled Linda Ronstadt's arrangement, they just played with the melody line. David Foster went into Long Beach to get a copy of Dolly's recording - the record store only had Linda Ronstadt's (from Prisoner In Disguise - 1975). David said when he heard it - he knew immediately what they could do with the song. When Dolly found out that they were using Linda's version as a template for their, she called David to give him the final verse which Linda hadn't used in her recording.
The writer of this brilliant song, the sweetest version with her wonderful voice. Love this so much xxx So sad that the brilliance of Whitney singing this is that we lost her xxx
This song tears my heart out. I can't hear it... without breaking down into tears. Anyone who has ever loved a woman in an impossible situation will identify with every word of this song. Thank you Dolly for setting some of the most painful moments of my life to words and music.
The song, "I Will Always Love You" was originally written and recorded in 1973 by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. Her country version of the track was released in 1974 as a single and was written as a farewell to her one-time partner and mentor of seven years, Porter Wagoner, following Parton's decision to pursue a solo career
