I’m literally befuddled at the level of talent in this woman. She’s an absolute star. And I love the fact she conducts herself as such. What an amazing human being.
That’s as close as it gets to American royalty, except it wasn’t inherited, it was earned. Class act that has given so much back in addition to her music. Love you Dolly and as a 35 year old man, still would.
How many of us can say Ken Burns on PBS brought you here! I can !! Made me like Country Music all over again. Made me Happy! Dolly! You saaaaang & yodeled that song! Yodel YayHeeeeeeeeeehe hehehehehe Yeah !!
I will freely admit his documentary brought me to look up the footage. As the first night's credits rolled and this song/version played, I sat up and was awestruck!! Gives me goosebumps listening to it ever since...
ABSOLUTELY the Ken Burns PBS documentary brought me here. I'm 52 and use to HATE country music with a passion. Ken Burns and his meticulous research has made me PROUD. God bless Mr. Burns and his painstaking research to make this all possible. "Good morning to you sir!!"
Her bashful expression during the faltered yodel cracked me up! Oh the perils of NOT lip-synching! On the subject of NOT lip-synching: she's amazing in concert. Total, powerful vocal control with the sweetest sound on record.
I'm here from Ken Burns also. I'm a songwriter and I'm embarassed to say I did not know Jimmy Rogers. Well, that's something that won't happen again! I think I need to cover a Jimmy Rogers song, if I can. Dolly has got such a voice on this, and the guitarist is tearing this up!
Had the pleasure of knowing and working with Jimmie Dale Court, Jimmie Rogers's grandson before he also passed. A very talented musician who relished his background and musical roots, Jimmie Dales carried on his grandfather's love of music, performance and song writing and he played at the various annual Jimmie Rogers festivals across the country and at the Kerrville Folk Festival here in Texas. I remember one time out at his Bee Creek studio while the band was rehearsing I was dancing with one of the musicians girlfriends on the basketball half court next to the studio and got a little too frisky and she farted on my hand. Only in Texas. That's true story.
That Yodel! Dolly, you never cease to amaze me with that voice that has laughter, sunshine and ease in it. I came here because of your singing in the closing credits of Ken Burns' film on country music. Much love!
I just watched Ken Burn's documentasry. Yes, it was great. I knew little about Jimmy Rogers but will seek him out more often since. What a talent and trailblazer. P.S. Yodelling ain't easy.
she was actually born in cuba and smuggled to miami as a baba. i have the evidence. the journey was paid for in diamonds. rare austrian squirrel diamonds.
When I was a little black kid growing up in Philly, I lovvveeddd Hee Haw! Especially because they would sing these type of songs! Dolly i think was too big to be on Hee Haw by the time i started watching in the late 70s, I always wished she'd do thesr type of songs... So this is amazing!! If u haven't watched Country Music by Ken Burns, you're missing maybe the top 3 documentaries of all time! I don't even regularly listen to Country, and I loved every second of it!! And Dolly was hella cute, goodness lol
Steve Phil2010 I really miss the ‘70’s for that reason. The ‘60’s too. I was a little white kid in Australia, but back then colour didn’t matter, it was all about the music. And as a musician I owe sooo much to brilliant black artists, but back in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s we all worked together, and appreciated each other’s talents. I do miss that.
I am a country girl in japan. 😂and i love dolly! i wish i could sing like her. I love her coz she smiles like sun itself.! shinning always! Her blight smile makes me smile always! I can smile like her but can't sing like her. . yet. ! but i wanna try!
I've heard a lot of ppl sing this song, some of the most well known and respected ppl in the music business...but in MY opinion...NO ONE can sing this song like Dolly...she just NAILS it every time!
I would like to thank Country Music PBS and Ken Burns for introducing me to this and many other great songs. It's a wonderful documentary about country music I highly recommend. Dolly Parton is a national treasure.
Arthur Warnock Thanks!! I didn’t know anything about the documentary! Just LOVE Dolly’s music. Grew up watching these shows but didn’t really appreciate the amazing talent!
I think Dolly Parton is one of the most important women in the modern music era. Strong, beautiful, talented and honest. Hard to find those qualities these days. She is really underrated if you look at the span of her career and level of influence.
Hey Samm1909, you can't go wrong with the other renditions. The original works for sure, but Ms. Parton feminine touch and her flair does it for me personally. It's all a matter of what does it for the individual ear. They're all good and lyrics take you back to a time when folk worked and hard. Thanks again!
Thank you Ken Burns! I’ve always loved Dolly, but I’m more familiar with her pop songs than the real country tunes. This is just great, and I really enjoyed learning more about the genre.
I watched the ‘Porter Waggoner Show’ every weekend with my grandparents in South Texas. I saw this live, I’m sure. Dolly was way more talented than he was. Incredible.
She is a real down to earth person and loves and respects all her fans. I have never been to any of her concerts. You were very fortunate to have spent so much time talking with her. Congratulations and thanks for your comment.
This is my favorite version of the song. But it is hard to NOT like anything Dolly sings. From this song to I Will Always Love You, Coat of Many Colors, Hard Candy Christmas, and Jolene.
She had a powerful voice to go along with that genuine personality. One of the most likeable and relatable singers/songwriters/performers in country/popular music history.
It was too late. Voting ballots had already been mailed out. So when she was voted in, Dolly graciously accepted. She had thought only rock stars were members. Once Dolly was told there were members who weren't rock either, it made her see the issue differently. Her friends Brenda Lee and Wanda Jackson were already members.
Thank you Ken Burns for "Country Music" and introducing this 40s something guy covered in tattoos and that listens to hardcore punk to all this wonderful music encompasing Dolly's cover of Jimmie Rogers "Mule Skinner Blues". Damn I love this stuff!
I saw an interview with her, where she never thought she was pretty enough. God, is she adorable here. Look at the joy in her smile when she sings. Just beautiful.
I'm feeling very emotional right now, please forgive. I was raised in a household where classical was king. My father was an amazing classical pianist. We listened to Opera every Saturday....lol hated it with a passion but I always felt people who were 'classically trained' were superior, that was my upbringing. NOT SO. Music is music, no matter the vehicle, the instrument or the upbringing. When it's played, sung and performed from the soul, it's heaven sent.
