This video covers when a cat needs a bath and how to go about it if it does. Top tips on doing it right from someone who has done it all wrong many times.
Good tips! My wife started bathing her cat when she was a kitten, so she got used to the procedure. She tolerated her baths very well bath and really only protested to being restrained by crying. During and after the bath, she always got treats. We would bathe her at most once per year - usually on a hot day in July or August. Our shorthair cat hated being brushed, and my wife felt that the bath removed any matted undercoat. Our cat definitely seemed more comfortable afterwards. We always used cat shampoo and avoided getting her ears and face wet - she didn't like that. My wife would wear a long sleeved shirt and a large denim apron that kept her dry and protected against claws. She used two large bath towels to dry. Once our cat got older (she passed at age 18), her arthritis prevented her from cleaning her paws and near her tail. We would just spot treat these areas with warm damp paper towels. She tolerated this quite well too.
Thanks for the comments, Andrew! I forgot to mention the treats. Great point! Training kittens when they are young is a good idea. It will certainly prevent a huge struggle. I saw a video of a cat swimming in the ocean with a bunch of dogs. I think it thought it was a dog. Anyway, goes to show that anything is possible.
I also use a wash cloth or unscented baby wipe for kitty's butt as needed. Our senior cat can't reach straight down along her spine, and she tends to get debris and mats between her shoulder blades and on her hips, so I've started offering her a warm washcloth about two or three times a week - no soap. (She likes to follow us into the bathroom anyway.) I let her sniff the warm cloth, then use it to pet her from neck, down and over her tail a few strokes as she paces and purrs. Then I either use a comb - a cheap scalp massager from the human hair care section - or a towel along the same path, letting her sniff each first and proceeding if she doesn't attack it. Annually or as needed, we take her to a professional groomer for a full bath, brush, and sanitary shave (trimming butt and "pants" hair short to make it easier for her to keep herself clean). Cat nails tend to peel and shed like an onion, and are easier to trim than dog nails. I use a big human toenail clippers to do it approximately every month or two, or when we notice kitty getting her claws stuck in something, or she unintentionally pin pricks our laps when she hops up or off. My sister and I can usually handle trimming her nails (not too short! Ask your vet): In a calm moment, my sister stands and holds the cat with kitty's front paws over her shoulder. Then, if the cat isn't exhibiting distress, she holds kitty belly up for me to do the back claws. It's not kitty's favorite thing, but she usually doesn't try to bite and only wiggles a little bit - because we only do it when we're all feeling calm and we praise her through it.
We have four cats, the only time we had to bathe them was when they all had fleas. We used a very large Rubbermaid container, with Dawn dish soap, warm water, rinsing well, changing it between cats, lots of towels and treats. With our two fuzzy butts we shave up their fluffy butts to help keep the poopy problems to a minimum. We hire a groomer 2 times a year to do the trimming and deshedding them in the spring and fall. Either way it’s a two person job, one holding ,one washing.
Great tips! My cat Ashy has the same problem with the long hair so I need to keep up on keeping his behind trimmed ✂️every few weeks if I wait too long something will stick💩. He is 6 years old now and has really mellowed out and getting used to it. When he was younger I’d have my husband hold him while I washed or trimmed but the past 2 years I can do it alone. I like the tub better because he’s large.
I always started giving my cats baths when they were kittens that way by time they were adults it was hard to keep them out of the bathtub wether I was in it or not and sometimes the shower I also would turn their claws from the time they were kittens and they were used to it and they done it without a problem
