I ordered one of these, then started reading some very negative reviews. I tried to cancel, and they said it had already processed. They said I would have to wait until I got the product. So I did, and I am so glad that I did not cancel the order. I see people have problems with this device, and when I was setting mine up I skipped the update. Not sure if this made a huge difference, but I am experience little to no issues. The only issues I am having is the delay in music, which is not to bad. Other than that I love it, I do not plan on updating it until I start running into issues. It connects even when I am at home with home WiFi. Car : 2019 Volkswagen Jetta

My previous car had factory fit CarPlay (a BMW) so moving to a Volvo had me missing it. I bought one of these having seen various adds and reviews. The start up time is similar to the BMW. Wireless CarPlay does take a few moments to start up as it has to first do a Bluetooth handshake before then establishing a WiFi connection, Beyond that, I find this works flawlessly. Audio quality is the same as when using a wire, I certainly don’t suffer from any interference like you described. I also find that the system does go into night mode when my car does. This feature is nothing to do with the dongle. So I can’t help thinking your issues are a combination of unrealistic expectations and perhaps the set up of your self installed CarPlay setup.

I bought this Car2Play. I had an issue, they told me to complete a FW update. So I did. It bricked the dongle. So I contacted them. I had to send it back at my cost, with tracking, they’d review it and replace it after they received it. It is now sitting in my office as a paperweight. The review that is given here is mainly spot on. Delays in connection, locking up or lagging on sat nav. All in all a bad piece of kit.

Purchased one in Dec. 2021 for my 2017 Mazda 6. I have a retrofit Carplay module installed. No issues at first, but recently, the dongle would load up to a black screen, or it won't load up at all or it would not connect at all. I would have to unplug it and plug it back in and that will sometimes make it work. Starting to get super frustrating and on the verge of just going back to the wire since I had no issues with that part at all.

I have the same device which I purchased for my new Jaguar. I have found as long as the iPhone is unlocked and I simply place it in the center tray which is inches from the dongle Carplay kicks in after about 20 seconds and from then on plays fine. I initially kept my iPhone in my pocket and there was a drop out once in a while, the closer proximity has cured this. Tapping the car's screen or generally trying to fiddle with anything simply delays the connection, I have learned to leave well alone and it comes on quite quickly. Is it in the same category as my high-end Pioneer after-market wireless head in my Jeep? No, but better than fiddling with wires.

Whilst I know your video isnow a year old, it does resonate with me in respect of my recent experience with a couple of Carplay AI boxes. An AI Box is the same as a wireless dongle but also adds an Android tablet to your car's infotainment screen. I have tried a Carlinkit and an M.I.C unit and both become glitchy usually when they start to get too warm, with screen freezing and in the case of the M.I.C device it would continually reboot. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the technology is just not there yet, and this is in October '22 and trying some of the latest model's. I think due to the enormously variable systems built in to different brands of vehicles, these devices are trying to cover all possible configurations and as a result fall between two stools. I did wonder whether the simpler purely Carplay dongles that you were talking about got around these problems but they seem to be similarly afflicted.
@BrandonSnodgrass

I’ve had good luck with my 2019 Forester. Got the dongle in December 2020. When it arrived, it would not work with my car. Tech support had me do a firmware update and it’s been good since then. It does take ~20-30 seconds to boot up and connect. Skipping audio tracks is a little delayed, 1-2 seconds. My phone doesn’t recognize that I’m disconnected when I shut the car off for a few seconds. So it’s best to switch a call to handset before shutting the car off if you don’t want to wait for it to switch itself.

Thanks for the heads up. There's a Reddit about this and most posts agree with you. One thing did strike me today. I recently bought a new Subaru Forester and it's my first car with CarPlay. It's also the first car I have bought instead of leased in about a dozen years. I intend to keep this car a very long time. So what happens when Apple removes the lightning port on future iPhones? I know it's not official yet that they will, but the rumors are from very good sources. My guess is that it will take more than a firmware upgrade to my Forester Entertainment unit for wireless CarPlay to work. BTW-The ad that plays on your video is for CarPlay2Air. LOL

I’ve had it for nearly a year and haven’t had any of those issues you mentioned. It really depends on the head unit and make/model of the car. For instance, the dark mode automatically switches on using the sensor built into my car (2018 VW). Also, it only uses BT to make the initial connection with your phone. After that it uses a local WiFi connection. There have also been half a dozen or so firmware updates. I think anyone who is on the fence should check on their specific head unit to see what experiences people have had.

Did you update it to latest FW? Because I have it in my Golf 7.5, I have none of the issues you had. Even the functions you claim not to work, such as auto dark mode, are working in my car. So I bought two of these...one for my car (2020 Toyota Camry) and one for my girlfriend’s car (2020 Toyota 86). It works flawlessly in mine but does the unresponsive thing in hers. Pretty much the only troubleshooting step is to unplug then plug back in. Out of 20 times of doing that, it FINALLY started being responsive. Considered it a success and then shut off the car. The next time we get in her car it auto connects which is good but then back to the unresponsiveness again. I unplugged/plugged it back in about 50 times and it still is being unresponsive. Really unsure if this is something that will work for her car...thoughts?

I have had very similar issues with my device. I have a 2018 Mazda 6, and a few times after finally getting it to work (after unplugging and plugging it back into the USB port), it would restart the car's whole entertainment system in the middle of driving! Your video was quite a surprise to find as I have the exact dongle and have had none of the issues you’ve described. Also, as a nugget of information: Wireless CarPlay is available now without the need for dongles with some OEM manufacturers and mainstream aftermarket head units. Also, CarPlay transfers the data via WiFi, not Bluetooth. BT is only used for the handshake to let the CarPlay enabled device know that it’s present, it then switches to WiFi then for all data transfer. Easy to not know this as the WiFi symbol doesn’t appear on your phone whilst using CarPlay. I have had a different issue which is annoying but I’m on the fence about it being a dealbreaker. My handsfree call audio has a noticeable delay which can end up with me talking over the other person. Overall I’d agree that wired is better in the grand scheme of things but I’m pleased with mine as I can now use my wireless cradle in my van and hot foot it out of the door with phone in hand without the need to unplug. It’s more convenience than laziness. Take care

i got this for my f150 and it works flawlessly, but they call it carlinkit 2.0. it requires firmware update when first setting it up. After that, i don’t even notice any delays whatsoever. It must have been pre-optimized for Sync3.4. Quite happy with it, so far. This allows me to charge the iphone faster wirelessly while still using carplay, and not having to fiddle with any wires every time i go in and outta the truck! It’s a convenience worth $120 (on Amazon) without loss of any features.

I just rcveived my CPLAY2AIR in the mail and tried to connect it. My CarPlay unit said, "this device is not supported". I went online to their website and discovered that, it is compatible with third party units such as Alpine and Pioneer (mine is Alpine) but there is a little asterisk stating that the car must have built in CarPlay even if you are using a third party unit. I had the Alpine unit installed because my car didn't come with CarPlay (it's a 2010 model). Now I am dreading this next phase given your experience with the company.

As an FYI, Carplay doesn't use Bluetooth for data, Bluetooth effectively hand shakes the two wifi enabled devices (cplay2air and your iPhone), so the data can transfer over wifi. Think of screen sharing on ios to a smart TV, just with a Bluetooth certification to enable the wifi connection securely. If you turn off your wifi after connecting, it disables carplay. I use this system, and can attest to the bugs, My brother's Kenwood head unit has significant lag compared to my Alpine deck, but on the whole, it's good if you can tinker a bit imo. Good vid!

I didn’t realize that they were shipping from China (didn’t do enough research). I expect some delay and loss of sound quality for the convenience of wireless. I’ll see how important it is. Since I am most interested in phone calls using Siri. Being able to jump in my car, have my phone automatically connect and then do the calling I need is a huge plus. Hoping it works. If not I’ll send it back and replace my radio with a built in wireless carplay.

I’m glad I bought my carplay2air unit before I saw this video. While I generally agree with the 5 points mentioned in the video, none of these have been dealbreakers for me, and in fact after using the device for about 6 months now I am extremely happy with it. Firstly the hover over issue is just cosmetic and in no way affects the functioning of the unit. Hopefully it will be fixed with a firmware update at some stage. Regarding the lag at connection, yes it would be great if it connected a little faster, but in reality, for me, by the time I’ve reversed out of the garage and on the road it has connected.. I can live with that. To me audio quality is no different than the wired connection. That’s not to say that some my detect a difference. For me it’s a non issue. Worth noting that, as I understand, once the initial Bluetooth handshake takes place the connection depends entirely on wifi connectivity. Again, delay for me has been a non issue. The exact delay can be configured to give the best combination of minimal lag with no dropouts. In my case I have set delay to 500msec. I don’t even notice this day when skipping tracks etc. Even when using navigation, the delay is acceptable. My unit does work fine with dark mode in my car. Maybe I have a later firmware, or maybe something to do with the car itself. Regarding occasional freezing, even wired CarPlay would occasionally freeze, and I would have to unplug and replug the usb cord. Yes wireless CarPlay freezes at about the same frequency (maybe once a month), but interestingly, if that ever happens it automatically goes through the reconnection process quite quickly with no input on my part. Overall I am extremely happy with carplay2air. It’s refreshing not to have usb cords hanging around in front of the car. I just get in the car and place the phone on the wireless charger, (or leave it in my pocket).

I purchased one of these and experienced all the same issues. Ultimately, a software update rendered the unit inoperable. I returned it via non-trackable parcel post, due to the $75 cost for traceable service. It's been 4 months and, of course, they claim it hasn't been received yet, so they will not consider a replacement or refund without receiving the old unit.

I‘ve seen the same behavior but it is easy to explain. On my car, once I open the door the dongle gets powered on, so it’s already trying to connect my phone even without the ignition being on. When I turn on the ignition the phone and the dongle already had plenty of time to connect.

I wish I had seen your review before I purchased this. I bought mine, two weeks later took one of the updates, and the device bricked. Sent it back on August 19th. As of October 17th, still haven't received the adapter in China, and will not send me replacement until it is received. Worst experience ever. I'll just stick with a cable, as it's 100% reliable, and won't have the audio lag that I did experience when on a phone call.

For someone to knock a product in front of a camera without demonstrating the issues for others to see says more about the guy than the product! I’ve used this device for days and have had not a single issue with it. My guess is he’s either grinding an axe or flexing his audience, but this ain’t an honest review!
@VittorTech
@VittorTech 3 года назад
I’d like to make it clear to everyone that my review is my honest experience. A creator doesn’t spend this amount of time scripting, recording, editing and then monitoring for a “fake” review. Yes I have my commentary speaking about the product but if you kept watching you see me recording the real life example of it freezing with my vehicle. Watch the entire video before lying about it Peach Warrior.

I don’t have a video manually installing CarPlay because I installed it before starting this channel but if I ever do it again I’ll document the process. It’s surprisingly easy and colour coordinated but it does require clipping some wires.

Just noticed this item pop up as an ad. Upon research came to this video. Thank you for your great feedback. Firstly, the $129 is steep to save me 5-10 seconds to plug in. The issues you point out are significant. Plus dealing with China is a non starter. I did want to point out a 6th flaw that you didn’t mention, which is, while you are streaming CarPlay over Bluetooth and not plugging in, your phone is using power and not charging. I can see that being a problem as well. Not buying this. Thanks.

I played with CarPlay2air for three weeks with my Chevrolet Colorado 2020 with infotainment 3. I tried all kinds of settings and I troubleshot it almost daily. People have said it would not work. In fact, I sent an angry email saying that that lied to me and they said it would work in my truck. However, I got it to work for 160 bucks and it works almost all the time now. May work all the time, time will tell. I was thinking about replacing the head unit, that’s how much I wanted wireless. That would have been a 600 buck decision. Bottom line: if you are not a techie, this may not be your device until it gets more user friendly. If you are willing to plug and unplug, delete Profiles and reinstall, test the start up protocols of your car, this may not be your baby. Some infotainment options seem to have less pain than mine. Overall, I got mine to work when others said it would not. It is very helpful and I’m glad I got it. It will work on 98% of the cars, but you may have to spend hours troubleshooting before you get there. The hover over is not a big deal. Happens occasionally, but then goes away. Recognizes my system in 30 seconds to 1 minute. No skipping of tracks or audio lag or loss of audio quality.

Guilherme Basso I made all my connections blank by for getting them. Wi-Fi outside the home, so it wouldn't connect. I forgot the mychevy blue tooth connection. I then reset my network connections in the general tab on my phone. I cranked the truck and opened up blue tooth and it began to pair. Worked for a few days and then not. Can't figure why I keep losing it.

AngloCock I have a 2020 ZR2 , am curious if your still having issues with it loosing connection since your post a month ago. I just received my replacement unit from their pathetic customer service and head game return policy. Originally I bought a unit March 3rd of this year and I finally have the new replacement in my hands , but after reading all the posts and this video I am thinking this is gonna be a item used during a future road rage and it flying out my window of my truck at the source of my anger 😋
@frtripp
@frtripp 3 года назад
H0CKEY604 I’m pretty knowledgeable about tech, but don’t understand this thing. Three times I’ve updated the software via the internet and it busted by infotainment center on my truck. After cold starting the truck and plugging it back in and driving around for 15 or so minutes away from all the home WiFi in my community, it elects to reconnect. Now, as long as I don’t go into a store for 5 minutes or less and try and restart, everything works great. In the morning when I start the truck everything about the dongle fires up in less than a minute. Only trouble is the quick runs into the store. Power stays on in the usb and upon restart messes with my infotainment. I’ve gotten into the habit of keeping my truck running and just locking the doors on the quick runs. Cold starts in the morning all work great. It is finicky at first, but once you learn it on the Chevy it work fine. My wife’s 2018 Equinox with an older infotainment works flawlessly every time.

I find the carplay2 have the following problems: 1. If you’ve had the phone connected via via bluetooth before in order to make phonecalls the cplay2will actaually cause an echo (for the receiving party). Thus you need to uninstall yor phone from the cars memory and only use the bluetooth transmitter of the cplay2 in order for it to work better. 2. All the calls will experience a delay which is very frustrating. 3. It randomly unconnects. Basically at some point everyday. 4. It takes forever to connect. 5. It frequently disables the volume control. Basically, I regret bying it since it feels like a pre-production unit. Notice: I drive a Toyota Rav4 gen5.
