Don't cut your grass too short

Im often asked how high to cut your grass. Honestly for most UK grasses I would be cutting anywhere from 30mm to 60mm typically.
You need to allow for the one third rule which states never cut off more than 1 third the height of the grass blade in any one cut - you can actually even extend that out even more to a 1 quarter or a 1 fifth rule for even better results..
Honestly mowing more frequently and ONLY taking off the top 20% or so of the blade will repay your efforts handsomely.
As for mowing height, some grasses, like golf course seeds can be cut extremely short... BUT you have to mow much more to keep within that one third rule.. a grass thats only 5mm high could grow to 1cm high, if you cut off just 5mm with the mower thats a massive 50% being cut off!
So for most Uk lawns try and cut 2 to 5 times a week, just taking off he very tips and thank me for it later.

This year I am using a 50cm Flymo (non grass box model) to trim out rear small cottage garden lawn. Gets a twice weekly high cut "float" - a 5-10 min job. Result, the lawn is like a thick healthy green carpet. As it's trimmed so often there's little / no grass clumping. Any grass seed go back into the turf and with the fine cut grass seem to thicken the turf.

This has to be the number one rule over anything when it comes to a nice lawn. So many people make this mistake, myself included in the past. Luckily, the lowest setting on my new mower is quite high so I can't go wrong on that one mowing at least once a week.

Hi I reckon it'll get better yet as its been such rubbish weather and as you sys the shade... Regular mowing will thicken it up super fast

Morning shaun,is 50mm short in your opinion?i normally mow at about 3 inches and it looks very healthy and greeen at that but would like to go lower
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Месяц назад
Hi that's fine, but usually you'd wnat to step it down gradually to the new height over a few cuts to avoid any stresses

Lovely tree though 🌳 Can I ask, when renovating a lawn with compacted mossy clay soil, can I add 50/50 sand and compost and which sand to use? There's lots of different types of sand available but I can't figure out what sand I need. I'm planning to start renovating my lawn today after binge watching a lot of your videos. I'm going to hopefully turn my wasteland into a garden.

Hi just go for lawn sand or sports sand.. Id be tempted to add in a little regular soil and also a sprinkle of gypsum down the holes but anything you do will help usually.. have a great day :)

Can you suggest a good seaweed product. I've been using Envii. Is the multi mite product on Amazon any better? I noticed you used the Multi Mite last year on your lawn.

Hi I've only ever used multi mite I'm afraid... I've heard good things about envii

A1 seaweed is pretty good, lawncareguy also 1 but it's less concentrated and seems to give less kf a greening effact... a1s is the best I have used but I alternate between both every 3 weeks

Morning Shaun, I’ve recently reseeded, some of which still hasn’t germinated. The existing grass has grown loads this week with the warmer climate. What is the rule with cutting in this situation. The grass is well over 10 cm long now.

Hi I'd give it a cut but just be very careful to lift feet up and carefully turn the mower

Which feed do you rate as the best? Should of parked the van in front of the neighbour's whilst you were there for the benefit of people driving past 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣 you'll have to post a short of the before and after in a couple of weeks.👍

Hi I'll be completely honest, I haven't really tested different brands.. usually Ive just blond with whatever my supplier sends me (and has always been fine), but many years ago I used to use the Icl branded stuff and that was great

People worrying about the 1 3rd rule seem to forget to mention that you can cut way more than that if you do it in 2 passes. Left to right on number 3 then up and down on number 2. You can do more than 1 3rd in 1 day just not in 1 pass, this should be preached way more as people are just left thinking they cant bring the level down without waiting days inbetween
@adrianjohnson1028
@adrianjohnson1028 Месяц назад
The one third rule has to do with preventing scalping. When grass is long, the top portions shade out the bottom portions so the plant reallocates chlorophyll production to the top portion. Cutting back to this yellowed portion causes excess stress to the turf and leaves it susceptible to pest and weed invasion.
