I had booked a braces appointment several months ago. The plan was to extract one of my bottom teeth and then use braces to straighten the rest to make a fuller smile. I'm at a point in my life where I can afford braces and it's not a big deal. However, something happened that changed my mind.
I was walking through the gym when I started talking to a younger guy who lost his job. He saw this as a blessing in disguise because it gave him the time and flexibility to work on his business.
As a business owner, I can see when someone has passion for their work. I could tell this young man was passionate about starting and growing his business.
Another subtle thing that I noticed were his teeth. They were far from straight. I knew that he didn't grow up with resources. Rich kids don't have crooked teeth.
I immediately called my orthodontist and canceled my braces appointment. I want to keep these teeth as a reminder because my background, which lacked resources, made me extremely RESOURCEFUL. This is probably true for you; your biggest strength probably comes from something you had to overcome in the past.
There are really 2 lessons here. The first lesson is a business lesson, Try to find a way to have some creative expression in your life. This will help you bring passion to your work. The second lesson is to recognize what you had to overcome in the past, figure out what attributes you had to display to overcome this obstacle, and leverage that strength to become a better version of yourself.
Oh, and also, don't laugh at people with crooked teeth.
