Donahue was actually ahead of the curve and a lot smarter than most of you think. I believe Donahue's strategy was to play devil's advocate while making it easy for the masses to digest the ideals of freedom of speech. He would ask his guests a question that the audience might ask, and allow the guest to answer. In most cases, the answer was relevant and valid. According to People Magazine, Luther Campell has a photo of Phil Donahue in his home signed, "To Luther, you are bad. Really bad--Phil". Donahue was always a proponent of the 1st amendment. In the episode with Al Jourgensen, Phil did the same thing. He allowed each guest to articulate their right to their position. He treated all of his guests with the utmost respect. In the '60s, he hosted a radio show where he interviewed JF Kennedy, Malcolm X, Vietnam war opponents, Elton John, Muhammad Ali and Noam Chomksy. Then, there's his outspoken position against the invasion of Iraq which led to the cancellation of his show in 2002. Point is, Phil rocks.

Suicidal Tendencies IS the most underrated band in history, they are easily the greatest band of their genre.

Luke did fight against censorship so I gotta hand it to him for fighting through this. He didn't just do it for himself or 2 Live Crew he also did for metal bands and future artists than don't have to fight the wars he and the DK did.

No matter what people say, 2 Live Crew had good music to dance too. And yes its true they did card for 18 and older. And for all those women who say they are disgusted, I assure you there were 20 for everyone of you singing and dancing to 2 Live Crew! As for all those religious groups, I saw many of you out there singing and dancing to their music and then going to church the next day and acting like you were all holy. What a F'ing joke!

It was our parents talk show I guess you could say. This is not what his show used to be like in the beginning. With the coming of Geraldo and then Springer though, Phil started picking up some things like this that he really had no idea what to do with, but it pulled ratings.

I'm a big fan of every musical act on the stage. This is great stuff.

Awesome. When this originally aired back in the day, I was only able to catch the tail end of this program and now I can watch the full one. Also, once Phil asked Uncle Luke the first question, I thought I was going to hear the start of Banned In The USA, well, at least it started in my head, the song did. I never understood what the big deal was back in the day about this. They put out a clean version of the album as well, heck, I even think they did this for all their records but after Nasty As They Wanna Be Pt II: Sports Weekend, I think they stopped doing so. So, I had the clean version because that is all I could buy at the time due to me being underage, but, my one friend made me a copy of the explicit version and boy, was my life changed after that

Never heard of 2 Live Crew, but I grew up listening to Dead Kennedys (one of my most favourite bands), Suicidal Tendencies and in my late teens I discovered the wonderful Wendy O. Williams and The Plasmatics. May she rest in peace.

Heavy lineup. I definitely looked up to Mike Muir as a young un - all these moral majority types always obsess over the 'messages' in the music, but ironically Muir ans ST were probably some of the most positive role models you could have. Imagine any celebrity today breaking down how laws aren't necessarily moral or just and people should try thinking for themselves.
