Here’s some quick research: 22:16 This Barbie is the “National Down Syndrome Society “ first Barbie that is neurodivergent, and has Down Syndrome. She was introduced April 25th 2023, with this doll “Mattel” is increasing their disability representation not only within their brand but also in the toy aisles. The “National Down Syndrome Society “ advised “Mattel” in the creation of this doll making sure that it reflected characteristics and symbols of Down Syndrome. Barbie has changed over the years and is striving to be inclusive and mirror the world around us. In her design they even used fabric with blue and yellow butterflies for her dress, as butterflies and those colors are symbols for Down Syndrome. - It has been sold out in most places. I think that’s why she was shocked to see it.

My brothers & I, when it was time, got to give my parents an idea of what cars we like &/or features we’d like to have but ultimately it was up to them. They would keep it in mind but since it was coming out of their pocket, their decision will be based on the financial aspect, safety ratings, reliability, etc. And it totally made sense to us. But that’s because we started with simple lessons like this while growing up! So same goes for our kids now!

I can relate to the "poor kid opening a video game system on Christmas and nearly dying of gratitude" so much. It was an N64 in my case but I thought it was a mistake, or that it was supposed to be someone else's present. It was nearly 25 years ago and I STILL have that same nintendo to this day. It's my treasure. I feel a little bad for subscribing to DD, but the snark is so fun that it's hard to wait. I always do my own roasts on her stuff while waiting for new vids 😂 Harlee got that enormous pile of every Barbie in the store last summer, too, in Ocean City. I wouldn't even know what to do with all those toys if I were her.

He could have also gotten a lot if that is her love language and break up gifts the night before, at each meal, etc. Or make it a birthday week of a present each day if he was overwhelmed. Instead of not buying him gifts and making him watch others receive “overwhelming” amount of gifts.

You are so right! That 1 gift as a kid. I remember the Christmas I wanted a cabbage patch doll. 1985! It was the year I found out Santa wasn’t real because I stayed up so late thinking about the doll. It was 1 am when I heard voices outside my window so I peaked and overheard my parents and neighbors talking. Apparently they all bought the dolls together from a guy who was selling them off a truck. 😂 I was so sad but pumped cuz I was getting a cabbage patch doll. The next morning I ripped through each gift to not have a cabbage patch. I was devastated. Then! My father says oh Santa left a present in the garage for me. I lost my mind with excitement. I got a girl named Adrianna Melinda, brown pig tails and she was legit. Stamped and all. So yes! These kids need to feel this feeling and unfortunately never will. It saddens me to my core.

The most glaringly sad thing about these birthday hauls is there is zero love put into them. Last minute, throw shit into a shopping cart. Even the way she throws the stuff into the cart screams zero shits given. It’s the high of the buy for her. Maybe she’s lucky that stores like Walmart in the US have every toy conceivable so you can actually do that. Here in NZ, you have to think ahead, we don’t have anywhere near as much variety, definitely not as cheap, and sometimes I’ve seen something on Amazon for one of my kid’s birthdays and then we pay almost as much (if not more) than the actual items themselves just to ship from the US to NZ, and you sure as shit can’t do that a few day’s before. Zero thought, zero care. Birthdays must be such an anticlimax for those kids.

It’s extremely common for kids to bring in cupcakes or ice cream cups for their class on their birthday. Public schools only allow unopened store-bought food though, so nothing homemade. And of course you need to ask the teacher for permission.

For my 6th birthday party, my parents rented a bouncy castle for the afternoon and then we had a picnic in the garden. I'm now in my 30s and that was the best party I've ever had. Those poor kids are growing up not knowing the value of money, or the value of special experiences. They won't be able to look back decades later and remember how insanely cool their 6th birthday party was, because every day for them is crammed full of treats. It's sad.

This is insane!!! Our kids pick an outing for the day and it's up to them if they want to bring their siblings or go solo with Mom and Dad. They get one present we pick (usually Legos, a craft, or puzzle) and they get to pick a present themselves. They choose dinner and I make them a hilariously ugly homemade cake of their choosing. It's just enough to be special without being crazy.

Growing up I don't remember going many places as a family unless it was a wedding or some small road trip. I waited till my 20s to travel and my favorite time away was camping. How wonderful it would be for her and her husband to take the kids camping it to some sort of lodge. Time away together, sitting and enjoying nature, snacking and swimming in the lake. And limiting video taking. What a wonderful time the kids would have and memories they would make.
