You absolutely lost me when this so called Doctor said everyone has violent thoughts along with weird sex thoughts that no one should hear or know about! What a wicked thing to say, and that's not true! He sounds nuts after that!
Summary: 1. Care about your brain health. It is insane to care about looks more than brain. 2. Do not let your thoughts control you. Examine your thoughts: are they valid/true? 3. Avoid social media addiction and the cycle of dopamine addiction. 4. Comparing yourself with more successful others with bring unhappiness. 5. Do not postpone your happiness until you achieve your goals. Live in the present. 6. Have balance in your goals for Health, Spirituality (purpose/meaning), Work, and Relationships. By being balanced you avoid burnout. 7. Avoid undue anxiety. But some anxiety is necessary to avoid doing wrong things. 8. Stanford study found the people who live longest are the conscientious people, that is the people who show up on time for their call of duty. 9. The same study show people who live longest are not the happiest people or the "don't worry be happy" people, or the constantly worrying people. 10. "Everything in moderation" is a terrible idea because it implies it is ok to do harmful inappropriate stuff in moderation. Why would you knowingly engage in bad things such as unhealthy food, alcohol, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and other bad things, even in moderation? 11. Overweight people have less healthy brain. 12. Alcohol and drugs are poison to brain.
He is soooooo right about the social media effect. When i was a teenager and young adult social media was emerging. More so as a young adult. I still remember all my friends hanging out and NOT ONE phone was in anyone's hand at all. The whole time. We stayed engaged the whole time. Always had something to talk about, or were always active doing something. More creative. It has done so much damage, but people don't care because it makes them money or it makes them feel good. Now you see groups of friends sitting together, all of them staring at their phones worried more about what that person they don't know is doing instead of the person right in front of them. Life is very different now.
It’s so sad to see. I was walking through the airport the other day and 75% of people are walking around with their heads down in the phones like a bunch of zombies
@@jsmooth5674 Joshua, this is my constant battle as a parent of two teens. Had no idea the hardest part of parenting when I grew up was keeping my kids off their phones.
@natlovell122 Yes! I saw a young couple pushing their baby down the street and they both were looking at their phones. The lady was holding the stroller with one hand, walking by traffic.
@@permaguard3166 My husband does not care what ppl thing at all and I wish I could be that way, I overly care to a fault. Plus scrolling social media - it's definitely changed my brain, I used to be able to retain info & remember. I need to deal with this stuff NOW. 😓
Nice interview. The habits to avoid are below: 0:10 - Not Caring About Your Brain 2:37 - Believing Everything You Think 7:57 - Scrolling 12:52 - Being Stuck in the Future 17:04 - Inappropriate Anxiety
I though he was going to touch on stuff like diet. Eg, coffee, carbs, etc... what is good or not good for brain. or certain activities like playing tennis or chess and... relationships
@@funtimes8296 I heard someone say once, “a simple error in judgement repeated over time will take you out of your life” You don’t want to out live your brain. 🤫🤯 Would you put diesel in your car, once in a while can’t hurt? 😝
@@funtimes8296 it depends on your definition of junk food. For me after being off sugar my tastebuds have changed and eating a piece of fruit 🍎 tastes sweeter and feels like the new “reward” instead of a 30g sugar candy bar 😁
1. Stop drinking alcohol 2. Stop eating high carb-low fat 3. Stop sitting on the couch all day 4. Stop drinking soda instead of water 5. Stop being sleep deprived. I think that those things are way way way more important than the points this guy brings up.
I think everything you said is a great list of things to do. And everything discussed here are areas of our everyday life that need attention. Mental health has a correlation with our emotional health. It’s something worth considering 😊
Stopped drinking alcohol and soda 18 years ago....Stopped high carb eating many years ago and have been an active person all of my life....My sleep is better but fortunately I've never had sleep issues.....All of your points are way better for your mental health than psycho analysis...I do think social media is destroying people....I'm 63 years old and I have a minimal exposure to social media FB and only use that to keep up with some family and friends...
Thomas, I don’t think you’re obsessed. I think you’re just very passionate because you’ve been in a place that most Americans are currently and you’ve seen great results when you changed your habits. I can see how you want that for the world. But not everyone will listen and many won’t care because they are set in their ways. I’ve learned so much from your channel. Thank you for continuing to provide healthy and helpful content to your viewers!
This is one of the rare videos that every single point addressed is utterly enlightening and refreshing. It literally makes people's lives change. Thank you so much for sharing!
My take are these, 1) Life is a gift, don't wasted it being negative and dwell in the past. 2) Live in the moment. Be free from pressure of others, live your own life. Don't live for others. But don't be an asshole either! 3) Balance is the key. 4) Find the truth within yourself and in others. There is absolute truth. 5) You can not change a person nor can you change them. Only when they are ready. 6) Dont waste too much time chasing media, toys and gizmo. They will only disappoint you. 7) Its okay to splurge but only if you can afford it and only if the item save you time (a precious commodity). 8) Avoid drugs. Thanks!
I like the way Dr. Amen phrases his words. He puts his thoughts into bite size phrases…. He & his wife have put much time & effort into helping people examine their brain health….and food feeds our brains! ❤. I thoroughly enjoyed Thomas’ interview with him…. He gives us much food for thought!
Recently I have begun extended fasts. Meaning fasts that last 3 or more days. Because I had learned that autophagy for brain detritus requires extended fasts. This works. Mental clarity improves noticably.
Props for Dr. Daniel for sharing that he was succeeding on the outside but wasn’t treating his brain and health properly on the inside. 💖 Everyone needs to hear this talk! Thank you ❤
As someone with a brain injury, ADHD, and a brain tumour (Stew) and a lot of brain problems…. Chronic migraines etc, I spend a lot of time thinking about my brain and it’s health. 🧠 ❤
Very sorry to hear this! I just said a prayer for you! This is great you are using your intellect to listen to knowledgeable people and get better. I know nerves take a long time to repair and wonder if with your brain injury and the brain I think a lot of it being made mainly of the same material as nerves... will reconstitute itself and you'll get much better. I'm only amateur about the brain and probably wrong about its composition just going by memory. You wanting to improve makes all the difference! More power to you!
I'm too mentally lazy to do social media. BUT RU-vid documentaries have taught me a lot. I love books, but ADHD cripples me. My brain goes so fast that I jump from paragraph. I can play a learning channel over and over and the good stuff sinks in. I love learning now. You are a good teacher. Both of you are.
I decided to give up most social media for the summer. I wanted to be more present with my kids and refocus my priorities. 1 month in and I honestly don’t miss it. I will most likely get rid of it all together. ❤
I’ve learned a tremendous amount about how to eat to be healthy and I’ve put it into practice. What I’ve never considered was my relationship to food. “Only love foods that love you back.” “Eating crappy food isn’t a reward; it’s a punishment.” Thank you for this video, Thomas. It’s a game changer for me.
I always appreciated your videos, unfortunately I had to unsubscribe because as much as I love the nutrition content, recovering from an eating disorder, it can be triggering. However, this video was an answer to my prayers this week, because I’ve really been mentally overwhelmed by EVERYTHING in life. This calmed me and gave me hope and a plan to remove these toxicities. Thank you!! Re-SUBSCRIBED ✅
LOVED this collaboration. Physical and Mental Health goes hand in hand. All about balance to achieve your best overall health. We lose sight of this when we’re too focused on the future self, not enough on the present and what brings us happiness now.
My wife was diagnosed with "post traumatic stress disorder" and ADHD recently and has been prescribed medications. My 16 year old son also will be tested for ADHD. Any advice?
@@permaguard3166 meditation actually. Not some three hour nonsense, just a few minutes in the morning. I would be really careful about letting them put your 16yo on meds. Do what you feel good about, but if they just want to put him on them so he’s more compliant at school, maybe consider other options as well.
You don't have to compare yourself to anyone, you just have to TRUST in your GIFTS. Those are the only things that can make proud of your own actions and success.
Thankyou for making me think again about my brain. I read a book a while ago called “a brain that changes itself”. I decided to become more grateful and encouraging to others. Yay it worked. I like nature and joined a nature walking/ running club and a happiness light came on. Lately I have switched to eating a whole plant based diet, because I heard it was better for me and better for the world, and another happiness switch just seemed to get turned on. After getting a regular checkup I came back a little vitamin d deficient. Supplementing with vitamin D and another happiness switch just came on. At 63 I feel happier, leaner, more energetic, more alert with a greater capacity to give than in my 30s and 40s. I run daily, Life is wonderful, it is such a great gift to have, don’t waste it.
Great interview! Made me think of a few things. I really relate to the complete reversal: "Eating crappy food isn't a reward it's a punishment." Drew Carrey - Drop the Oreos & chips and pick up the strawberries or avocado with veggies with olive oil. I started this a few years ago, I slip sometimes, getting better because I feel better eating fresh colorful healthy food. I have begun enjoying the whole process: Making a list, purchase, prepare, cooking, plating(making my food look good on the plate & serving) and enjoying it. Really - blueberries and strawberries look so cute together on a plate, or surround your applesauce with them or encircle your salad with them - it is fun to me and good for me too. Try it.
I agree, I almost skipped this one because of the thumbnail and the topic was something I though I didn't need to know about...wow was I wrong. We need more of this conversation.
For others to be serial killers is them being true to themselves.. so no .. FOLLOWING JESUS AND ACCEPTING HIM THE UR LORD AND SAVIOUR IS THE most Important thing in ur life
Thomas is amazing to listen to someone so aware of your body. So happy you have Dr. Amen on your channel, such an important contribution. My brain is one of those 250000 scanned. As usual your content is of such great quality. Thank you.
A practial 1st suggestion, a Buddhist / Zen 2nd suggestion, an obvious 3rd suggestion. The third one is the reason my grandchildren won't have phones until they are older. My daughter hardly uses her phone, so the girls don't either. Overall, a majority of these changes are rooted in millennia old ideas and practices: calm the mind and don't take everything to heart/emotion
"Not caring about your brain" - I'm sure there are people who don't care about their health until the SHTF, but most people who suffer adverse health effects DO actually care; they're just told to eat a diet low in fat, to use margarine, not butter, and eat plenty of whole grains.
Wow, such a wise man. I kinda take care for myself, meditate every other day, workout outdoors and eat healthy. But still love hearing summaries like this.
I adored this collab! Thanks, Thomas for bringing doc Amen to your channel, he is one of my favorite doctors! It's exciting to see how my favorite people start to collab together, it brings me even more confidence about the information they give. Keep it going!
@Thomas DeLauer, please don't let haters get to you. They are on every channel that I watch on YT. Remember all the good comments, which certainly outweigh the bad. You are well respected and appreciated! Keep up the good work and take time for FUN!
Tremendous interview. I love it when you do these longer form health videos in between your regularly great content. Thank you for introducing Dr. Amen to us.
I've watched Doctor Amen on some webinars over the years and have really enjoyed him. I did not know he had a YT channel. I'm headed over there now. Thanks Thomas!
Awesome interview! I loved it! I´m glad he mentioned alcohol use as well. I sometimes talk to my "alcoholic" friends (that consume at least 1 glas of wine or several beers a day and more in the weekend) that there really is no safe way of consuming alcohol and that your body literally treats it as poison by metabolizing it as quickly as possible trying to get rid of it. It also does not improve your sleep, as they tend to think, but actually messes up your sleep pattern. I feel it like is a lost battle, because alcohol is so omnipresent in our society. 🤷♀
I can fairly assuredly say I check all of these boxes for the most part for my mental health. The biggest one left out here and I am surprised it wasn't mentioned is sleep. Out of all of the healthy habits and practices I do getting a good night sleep on a regular basis is the one I neglect the most. It might be the number one most important thing you can do for your health mentally and physically. I can feel how much it affects my brain when I get a few good days sleep versus days of only getting 4-5 hours of sleep. My emotional state is harder to regulate, energy levels plummet making exercise more difficult, and overall cognitive function. I cannot speak cogent or concisely with proper english in full sentences on days with lack of sleep. Great video and I appreciate the information very much but this is so profound I just wanted to put it out there for others just because it was missed in the video. Do yourself a favor and get a good night's sleep as often as humanly possible. Priotize it! I'm really working on that myself I know it can be harder but, it is thee most essential thing you can do for yourself.
Hands down. One of the most informative podcast interviews/discussions on RU-vid. Thank you both for caring enough to share this information with all of us so that we can have a better quality of life! Quality over quantity, Health over wealth, Love God, your family, yourself and others = A GOOD LIFE
Being a influencer and comparing myself to influencers that are richer than me ,..and further than me …etc whew …deff steals my joy! Glad you spoke on this
Thank you for this very worthwhile interview. Most of it is intuitive and common sense (not all), but I feel like I need to keep hearing this. It is well presented here.
People who are in the media field or studied media know that when it comes to advertisements - a toothpaste or a sneaker isn't the product, it's the viewer.
Loved the interview and the episode. Keep up the great work. Your content provokes self reflection, inspiration and education. Love it, and big thank you!!!
This guy, Thomas... I've seen a lot of his videos over the years, and a lot of Times I've come across RU-vid videos and will click them of mid video if I sniff anything bogus on it, even with people I generally like: don't waste my Time. But I have noticed that his always seem honest and genuine. I want to say that he is a good man.
This was great. I learned a lot, and got inspired to take even better care of my brain. The looking back habit is a gem, since it relates to gratitude and fulfillment.
This was such a good conversation. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing this with us. It's going to be one I have to re-watch, because it's packed with so much useful information.
Thomas, I need more videos like this. I need to feel good being on Keto and IF. I've been doing this for 5 months and I have the body I've always, ALWAYS been wanting.....but the cravings have never gone away, the thoughts of "I'm hungry and I'm unhappy" don't go away....but a video like this really helped. Thank you.
It could be possible that you’re not eating enough fat. But don’t quote me. Maybe you need to find a keto friendly doctor you can do some blood tests on you. Because usually feeling hungry means you have low blood sugar… Which is generally related to having a big release of insulin in your system. But I don’t know. I’ve been on and off Quito… And my experience is… When I’m in ketosis I’m not hungry. Just the other day I did a little intermittent fasting… Just 16 hours or so… Who is Maragaret? All good of course, eight of those hours I was asleep.😂😂
Great interview. Let all the offended , carb eating , wine drinking beer guzzling , coke (soda) drinkers , church hating atheists chime in. Commenting on how dumb this interview was. They are missing out. Truly enjoyed everything you guys covered. I truly heard and seen the transparency in this video. Im passionate about things in my life , and you guys discussed some of them. I’m a new subscriber and your knowledge of nutrition and the body , is impressive. You ain’t reading from a script. You have lived this. And for that , I appreciate your work. I want to be a more knowledgeable on nutrition so I can help others also. Luke 9:62
Religion is not far from drugs. regarding the physiology of the brain. YOu may care about your life, yet the topic here is to care about your brain. The ugly contrasts you are painting, we against the others, is disgusting
@@monnoo8221 religion is not what I’m talking about. Clearly you do not understand what I’m talking about. You seen the Bible verse and clearly got offended. I’m commenting on the video and the content within. Instead of quoting scripture, how about I quote some Hank Williams. “ why don’t you mind your own business and you want be minding mine” have a great day. I like you. Luke 9:62
"Everything in moderation is the gateway to hell." I agree. I wish people would stop trying to force "just a little" ice cream or cake on me. My willpower is usually low. If I say "no, thank you" once, that has taken everything I have. If you push it, I will end up binging. Sure, I'll have the "little" amount in front of the person, but that just awoke the cravings beast. Sugar is my addiction. I wish people would be more understanding and have less "good intentions".
Thank you Thomas for shedding light on such a under talked about subject the brain and the health of it. Pretty relevant to every social issues being it is the organ of behavior. Would love it if more influencers you knew did his show scan my brain.
WOW! This is so filled with valuable insights. As a musician, now I see why rock stars become drug addicts... Performing is a huge dopamine hit. I've been to so many post-gig parties that kept the dopamine coming until the wee hours. The goal setting part was huge in why I'm unhappy now. I've so many crazy, hard to achieve (but not impossible) goals. All of my grandiose achievements were never goals. I just got into what I was doing, out of enjoying the process, and did it. This video deserves repetitive views, and is a keeper. Thanks Thom, for getting Dr. Amen on...
Very interesting and informative video for healthy mind, body and relationships. It gave me abundance of mental self awareness. As a practical person I think we should divide our leasure time amongst different activities such as exercise/yoga/walk, enjoying food, reading books, caring/chatting with family, relatives, friends, other nearby acquaintances and 7/8 hours sleep time apart from work time. Social media should be used purposefully for a stipulated time in a day. Addiction or unbalanced use of everything has always negative effects. Thank you so much.
