First off, check out the 4K scan on RU-vid which was discovered, uploaded, transferred, and color corrected by FemboyFilms: • Dragon Ball 16mm 4K Cr...
Second, yes, this video is only 1080p due to premeire not accepting MKV files. Between the 1080p nature and English opening, you can view this as a proof of concept if Funimation decided to do a competent Blu Ray release of the show.
I tried to show as much of the frame as possible without artifacts; I think it looks good, though rewatching I noticed at 1:18 there was a cut off at the top of the screen I missed. I don't have the Dragon Box on hand to do a true comparison, (but I've been told that release was still a little tight) but I think a Blue Bricks comparison is just as important because not only does it have English subtitles out of the box, but it's the only readily available release in North America. Femboy Fims themselves do have quite a few comparisons with the Dragon Box on their Twitter: / 1367655421398245377
I would gladly frame all 153 episodes if I had the chance.
Personally, of all the Funi Dragon Ball series home releases to use DNR, this is probably the best of the bunch. The Green Bricks, 2014 Z Blu Rays and the 30th Anniversary/Steelbooks look way more blobby. Most of the Orange Bricks are terrible as well, but seasons 8 and 9 of that seem to have it disabled.
I personally feel that the low bitrate, being trickier to get a hold of, and no 1-13 uncut in the US makes the Blue Bricks the better choice over the Saga Sets, in my opinion. I just find the low bitrate more distracting than the slight blur (and this is a guy who'll tell you to go for the singles for Z). Also, if you heard people say the cropping in the Blue Bricks is bad: it is, but so are the Saga Sets. Both releases use the same transfer (of the digibetas, not the film reels), and only a tiny bit is trimmed off the top and bottom compared to the Saga Sets, so it's really only an issue if you plan to watch on a CRT with overscan. So if you watched the Saga Sets on a CRT and didn't think anything of it, the BB's are fine.
I would kill if Toei remastered DB/Z in the the same way as Kai 1.0 (minus the redrawn scenes), but they'd probably be censored like Kai and the movie remasters. Funi proved they could do a great release with Z with the Level Sets, they just choose not to. Sadly, they don't actually have the reels for DB anymore, so it's unlikely they'll pursue .such a thing. So basically this show is screwed either way. There is a Blu Ray release in Spain, but if I recall correctly, it's just either the Dragon Box or Blue Bricks footage upscaled, so that doesn't count.
