With the use of floor demonstrations, two-time Hall of Fame basketball coach Doug Schakel, skill development coach for the 2015 NJCAA Div. II National Champions, shows you the drills to help teach the Modified Triangle Zone/Man Offense to your youth basketball team.
The drills, like the offense itself, are simple, easy to teach, easy to learn and include lots of passing, shooting, dribbling, and cutting. There is no wasted practice time which is important for those teams who have limited practice opportunities.

Coach 'B'- The changes/adjustments we make vs. a zone defense are: (a) We run the "Spread Cut" (go to 13:27 mark of Modified Triangle Offense video-part 1 to see it) instead of the "X" Cut. (b) We also use the "Stay Option" a lot and the "Stay and Play Option" (go to 16:01 mark of Modified Triangle Offense video-part 1 to see both of them) (c) We run the Pick and Roll Option on the Two-Man Side with the Post setting a ball screen on the top zone defender. If nothing materializes, the Point runs a backup dribble to the right wing spot and the "Rover comes over" to the ballside Rover spot. Now you have a new Triangle Side. On this backup dribble by the Point, the original Wing rotates up to fill the Point spot. (d) On the Two-Man Side, we call "Middle Post" and the Post cuts to the middle of the free throw line for a pass from the Point who then cuts toward the basket just outside the lane for return toss from the Post. Post can also fake the toss to the Point and then pass to either the Wing or Rover on the Triangle Side.

Thinking about using it with my 10u Boys next season!..1 question though?..What are the action or movement for players if the team run Zones a lot?

Hi. I love the triangle offense. I coach 5/6 boys and I have 9 players on my team. As you know for rec I need to sub all the boys equally which means I always have 1 very weak player on the court during the game who is unable to run this motion What do I do??? He is a level 1 skill level . Thank you. Cindy Bourassa

Cindy- That is a tough one. The best thing you can do is help the weak player improve his basketball skills. The Rover spot seems to be the easiest spot for a less skilled player. Wish I had a better solution for you. Skill work is really important! Best-Doug Schakel

Im thinking about implementing the triangle offense for my 8th grade girls, the team practices 4 days a week, i know you said your girls only practice once a week, so my question is would you recommend doing these drills everyday and do you run them back to back?

+maine2132 Certainly, with 4 practices a week and, hopefully. longer than 75 minutes each, I would insert other items into the practice schedule. Having said that, I am a great believer in repetition ("Repetition is the Mother of Habit"). And there is no doubt that these drills would form the foundation for each offensive portion of practice. I do run the drills back to back as lead-ins to the 5 on 0 and 5 on 5 work. We get great fundamentals work (pass, dribble, shoot) that relates directly to what we want to accomplish in our offensive scheme. We do not run drills just to run drills. We want every drill to apply to what we are doing on offense.
