I remember starting AoT, thinking it really can't be that good. 14 episodes later, I had to pause it to get up, stretch, go to the bathroom, drink some water and finally have breakfast that day. Amazing show
I envy anyone who discovers this show for the first time. The multi-year span between seasons and in particular a six month wait between the two parts of the series finale was torturous.
Final season? Are more? Than I won't even try to watch this. A series with less than 10 episodes it's a stretch, but I will accept it. A multi seasons series with 100 or more hours? I don't have the time.
@@UmbraFulgur cool, nobody is forcing you. But if 10 episodes is your cut-off point you're leaving out a loooot of great content. And this one doesn't come close to 100 hours, it's somewhere in the 30-40 range. You could also stop after the third season and leave it at that. It's a nice jumping off point and after it the plot changes dramatically, and the ending is polarizing at best. But again, do what you want
@@CptDallas I believe the story is handed down through history. Nephilim. From the Offspring of the Fallen Angels/Humans in the Bible. Just too real at times. Haha. Man, I'm hooked
You can tell drinker is a writer. The way he was able to make an entire video about attack on titan without giving away even some of the earliest twists gets a big 👍 from me.
@@thisisobviouslybaitDude that's how twists should be written in first places. They must already have buildup so if you know what you're looking for it's available but if you don't it's damn near invisible
I think a great part of the success of Attack on Titan is because Hajime Isayama is a master at foreshadowing. He would put small clues and hints about future events in such a way that when the twists actually happen, you recall all those tiny details and, suddenly, all makes sense. This is yet another proof that great stories come from individuals, not commitees.
I completely agree and this in large part is what gave me trust early on that I was watching something so much greater than a cheap thrill ride; while some mourned the apparent loss of the simple Man vs Environment story as it developed, Isayama's masterful foreshadowing told us from the beginning that the story would never be so simple, and indeed, would cut to the heart of not simply why a person may fight with another, but why they have any reason to live and to fight to begin with. A story about the nature of conflict itself and the meaning of life underneath that.
Attack on Titan made me laugh, made me cry, and shocked me with brilliant plot twists every season. It's an absolute masterclass in story telling. If present day Hollywood (and especially Disney) had half the talent of the people who made AoT, we would be in a blessed age indeed.
The thing that boggles my mind about the storytelling of AoT is how many of its twists are so expertly crafted. Every single one felt so natural and planned. Very unlike a show or movie with a twist that you can tell was just made up on the spot to keep people watching. Those can be entertaining... but AoT you can have your mind blown somehow for the hundredth time and just like all 99 times before that realize they had planned all of this from the very first episode. Honestly, typing this now... I'm not sure how in the world this show managed to have such a meticulously detailed roadmap from the outset without sacrificing something important about the characters like their believability or their personality.
Imagine they try to make AoT here but with a diverse cast where all the Marlians were mix race. God please wait at least a decade until this DEI bullshit does down
The trick to why anime is good and "hollywood" isn't is that the manga are created by a single person (at most 2 - 1 doing art and 1 doing the story), and anime are 1 to 1 adaptations, they make basically 0 changes to the manga. If you look at something like Game of Thrones, the show was better the closer it followed the books, which was written by a single person. You can't have consistent story-telling if it's a bunch of executives shouting over each other.
I've never clicked on a video faster. I'm not an anime fan, but I believe Attack on Titan is the greatest piece of media ever made and have always wanted the Drinker to watch it.
@@Jordan-Ramses I believe 98% of anime is cringe or rubbish. I'd never liked any of it, because most of it is all the same. But a tiny amount of it gets away with it and is phenomenal. Attack on Titan is the peak of it all. And despite being anime still manages to be the best thing I've ever watched. My point is that as someone who doesn't like anime, the show is still so good it doesn't even matter it is anime. It transcends being an anime. It doesn't fall for the cringe stereotypes of anime and is fully immersed in itself.

@@Deridus one hundred percent. it’s my personal favourite show of all time and I think you have to see all of the show to understand what the writer was thinking the whole time
The best compliment I can give a show like this is that when it’s all over, the mysteries they set up in previous seasons all make total sense because they had it all planned out.
@@sirhellsing Agreed, I would say seasons 1-3 are perfect and most of season 4 is at that level, but they left a lot of stories unresolved (or just quickly addressed them like Ymir's fate). And that finale is a bit of a gimmick, but it's still a good ending.
@bencarlson4300 I absolutely hated the ending (anime wasn't much better imo), but I guess strong emotions do pass with time. During the ending I would give it a 8/10, minus 2 points just because of the ending, now I give it 9/10 minus 1 point for the ending

I got the feeling isayama was going in one direction and suddenly backtracked on it (very rushed at the very end) . AoT ending reminds me of game of thrones ending :/
I’ve been waiting for this and I had goosebumps watching your review. I dare to say AOT is the BEST fictional story written in recent history. Thank you for taking the time to appreciate this masterpiece.
FECKING FINALLY! THIS IS A MASTERPIECE. This one got me into anime 2 years ago. I'm 33 yo. And a cinephile. But no other movie, tv show has ever gripped me as this one. When I saw this I was blown away. Now I'm cursed by looking for something at least a little similar to this. But nothing in the whole world could repeat that. If you haven't finished it - just watch it till the end. It's the show that will blow your mind when you finish it. and it becomes even greater on second viewing. So many details were missed by us on the first viewing and they all played a crucial part and could even suggest what was going on. But it's so masterfully done that you don't notice it on your first try. Simply the best show.
Have you tried Full MEtal Alchemist? Try the OG anime first, but stop once the Alchemists teacher gets introduced, around episode 25ish, then go to Brotherhood to finish with the canonical story. It's extremely hard hitting and while I dont thinkt matches AOT, it's just a really fantastically written bit of work
FMA brotherhood, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebob, Hellsing Ultimate, Berserk, ecetra. Just google for something like classic timeless anime and there will be some absolute bangers, anime from the 90’s where great. Don't get me wrong AoT is unique, but it's not the only great anime out there.
“Writers”, nah bro all of this story was done by 1 guy Edit: ok wow so I guess I should elaborate, from my own understanding mostly of all anime is adapted from manga(except for those times when it’s something original) and the anime is an exact copy of the manga, it’s not like other book adaptations where the studio takes parts of it and adapts a similar story(except for the few that do have studio interference) like how marvels civil war movie and book are similar but completely different. Of course there are tv writers whose job is to translate the images into animation. And in most cases the original manga writer doesn’t get to have involvement in the anime. But what makes Hajime Isayama(the creator of aot) unique is that he did have a lot of creative control over the anime since he considers the manga a blueprint and the anime his finished product, because he does make changes from the manga to anime and it ends up for the better. So in this case the creator was the main writer for the whole story, for the manga and anime, and what makes him extra unique is that apparently this is his first ever story that he wrote. Also of course he is the main writer but it’s also possible that he took notes from other writers to help him develop his story better
Even to the manga there's a Head writer, but they have ppl that help, consult and even take decisions. For example Sasha was suppose to go off by 2d. Season but another writer scraped that and restructured her arc
I first saw a traile rot this show at Manchester Comic-Con in 2014, and really wanted to see it. A decade later, here we are. Show if finally done and it's awesome.
@@mrksimka1159 Nah, it's still very high up in the list. It's also probably one of the best recommendations for anyone getting into anime. Because it's at an intersection between being very good and being very compatible with "normies". Let's just say, other shows have more "special" tropes.
@@meawiyaothman7872 you literally were under the last 3 comments I checked, saying the exact same thing everytime. My dad couldn't explain why but basically hated anime even though it's my full time job of 7yrs. One day I put episode 1 on for my mom and he kept glancing up from his ipad. Next thing I know they're watching 1 episode a day and finished a few months back having loved it. Long story short AOT is a great anime and an easy introduction to the media.
I finally finished this show, after not watching anime for years I sat down this year and couldn’t put it down once again. Absolute masterpiece in every way.
I’m glad you enjoyed it and after you finish the whole series, I hope this opens the flood gates for other great anime for you to enjoy and review. I’d love to hear your take on another slightly popular anime called… Death Note
Heads up, the ending is terrible, this is coming from someone who loved the manga for years. Do yourself a favour and just skip the last season and just make up your own ending, can't be worse than what we got.
I always like how the cast themselves come from multiple cultures from around the world, even though they all lived behind the walls for so long. Their names give us that clue. Mikasa (the Ackerman part always confused me), Jaeger, Springer, Zoe, Erwin, Jean, etc..
So glad you've covered this anime, because AoT deserves all the praises. If you haven't been through all of them yet: prepare for season 4. It's pretty much the mother of all plot twists and will turn all your expectations upside down.
Monster - this anime made me applaud in the end, it's one o rarest occasions when the story shows what made a great villain a villain towards the culmination and when you see this you just get speechless in shock while feeling the terror you saw and then you perfectly understand that what just happened can truly make any human a Monster. 10 out 10, I'll never forget it (the psychological aspect of the moment is truly hard core, it really can break peoples sanity if happening to someone, without spoiling it, it's on the same level of shock as Berserks Eclipse moment or imagine how would you be if you'd see a person in front of you burning in fire to the death in agony, stuff like that that can crack peoples conscience, that level of shit happened to Johan, but the thing is, unlike other animes, this one manages to show this moment the best way possible, in a way you would truly get it and don't have any doubt about it's veracity)
Funnily enough I’m in the middle of watching this anime with my dad right now. I’m a bigger anime fan and i show him some stuff he might like but he’s already said the top two anime for him right now are monster and attack on titan.
@@mrksimka1159 I know, but we only discover what really happened to Johan by the end, and the revelation is simply masterpiece because it allows not only to understand but also feel the moment that basically triggered Johans child mind into what he would become (I'm talking about the switch thing and what it represented to a kid)
Monster is objectively good and he will like it. the end. i'd rather watch his take on shows like "Serial experiment Lain" and "Frieren beyond journeys End" i want to know his thoughts on "Serial Experiemnts Lain" considering the current state of the online world or tge culture war, it would be amazing to see his reactions to how SEL basically predicted the "internet" back in the 1996. there are honestly so many animes to watch where do you even start as a beginner, you can watch absolute classics masterpiece like "Monster", watch the high profile hype show like "Attack on titan" or dive deeper and watch stuffs like "Serial Experiments Lain" , "Paranoia Agent", "Angel's Egg" etc. or Try shows like "Frieren: beyind the Emd" if you have the emotional capacity of it
The thing that got me into anime was the actual incredible amount of effort and passion that go into many of the stories they tell. Even the voice acting thats usually half ass script reading in most countries is treated like and art. When 200 people put 5x the amount of effort on a "cartoon" that studios of 3,000 people on shit movies you can feel it in every frame. Even the cinematography is better and they dont have 80,000 dollar cameras. They have a 200 dollar drawing tablet, a 80 dollar per year software, and whole lot of love/talent
I thought it was going to be about mikasa after trost.. but this is a perfect example of subverting expectations.. isnt just flesh mechs fighting either its deep and cool in ways you could never imagine without watching it.
We don't watch anime. Watched attack on titan, loved it, watched mob psycho next, loved it, watched one punch next, loved it, hunter x hunter currently. Silver lining to every story coming out of the west being so terrible; gave us a reason to try something new.
I discovered this show myself a couple of months ago, being nearly 50 y.o i was highly sceptical it was as good as it's reviews. Turns out it was was of the best shows i've seen in years and the music is absolutely epic imo.
Season 1 shocked me with how Game of Thrones it was like with people I thought would be regulars suddenly dying. It's quite the emotional rollercoaster which is both one of its strengths and weaknesses. It's a strength because it makes a thrilling story but a weakness in that it makes me hesitate to rewatch it as I may not always have the nerves for all the highs and lows again.
@@NoidoDev nah man, frieren fucked me up more than Aot, ever since i watched frieren, my self awareness about the sense of time just put me in constant stress since the anime makes time fly so fast😂
And, like GoT it certainly was...it got shittier with time. Most shows go that little bit too long rather than end when the perfect moment comes. Or the writers have held back some detail they really hoped would be worth the wait only to find it pissed off half the fanbase. Happens all of rhe time: GoT, The Sopranos, Dexter, Lost, Happy Days, Scooby Doo(Puppy Power? Give me break!).
I am a TV junkie and have watched sooo many shows thru the years and I will say AOT is one of the best series I've ever seen. Its one of the few stories I consider perfect
My favorite aspect of the series is being bound and chained by different things. Eren eventually frees himself from nearly every bond. But one thing he could never be free from was Time. The only force or enemy he couldnt fight. The only chain holding him back from Pure freedom. "Everyone is a slave to something"
Oh. Hell. Yes. Fully agree with everything the Drinker said, this is one of the best shows of any kind I've ever seen. Anybody, everybody, whether you like Anime or not, go watch this absolute masterpiece.
The best thing about attack on titan is that all of the questions it makes you ask, all have such interesting logical answers that have been hinted at since the beginning. So many shows with mysteries have so many great questions/mysteries, but the answers almost always flop and disappoint. For attack on titan I never felt like an answer was a disappointment, instead they opened up the world so much more and brought new interesting aspects and themes to the story.
My son insisted this week that he and his 65 year old dad should sit down this weekend, during his visit, and experience together this Anime. Well I was blown away by the story, universe and amazing animation. I got about sceptical around episodes 10 and 11 where it seemed to drag but that soon picked up a couple of episodes later. Well I am hooked. Never been a big anime fan. Watched the "classics" like Akira, Ulysse 31 etc... but this series blows them out of the water with it's adult themes and wondeful character development. Thank you Christopher for insisting. From what I gather we have a long and fantastic road together over the next 80 odd episodes.
AoT is an absolute masterpiece. They did an amazing job with the contrast of beauty and horror in a lot of scenes. For example, being inside a forest with beams of light shining through the canopy while characters you've become fond of are being slaughtered. It really makes scenes like that have a lasting impression. However, of all the aspects of the show that are masterfully done, the way they conveyed conflicting perspectives on the morality of war and humanity was brilliantly done above all else. After finishing it, it felt like a genuine honor to be able to witness such a work of art that was clearly created with immense effort and love.
It's genuinely a modern achievement of a story. Morality is put to the ultimate test, and your conscience is questioned at every turn of the plot and every character revel and choices, to the point you are uncomfortable with the implications of what our beloved characters do, and the triumphs of what the villains do. It blurs all lines of the hero-villain archetypes to tell us a human story of war and compassion.
I wasn't expecting this, but I'm thrilled to hear you're enjoying it so much. Although, honestly, the writing and characters are so strong it's hard to see how you wouldn't. It is a wild ride from beginning to end, let me tell you, but well worth the journey.
I had no idea what AoT was but a RU-vidr like you introduced it and sold it like it was a next big thing. 11 years later i give Huge credit to the young genuis author Hajime Isayama. He's forever a legend. Credits as well to both studios WiT and MAPPA for btinging his works to life. Now I'm an always and forever a fan. I'll keep this series in mind if a major war breaks out to remind ourselves how stupid but hopeful we are.
