I have been researching for about 6+ months for how I want to build out my XJ for camping. I like your design the best out of all the ones I've seen. Yours still allows a wide(ish) platform, with simple storage accessible with doors closed, modular if I ever needed to reinstall the rear seat when I'm not doing extended trips, and allows for a place to be seated. Thanks for sharing!!

Simply came here to show gratitude. Great job! I start my built soon and am hoping it comes out as awesome as yours did. Safe travels

Turn the hinge upside down :)

A piano hinge might have been a little easier to install.

Great idea and good job. Like your umbrellas and tarp in your rain sleep out vid.

Absolutely, and I would go either that way or door hinges next time. Piano hinges would have been way cleaner and easier 👍

Unfamiliar with “salvage stores”, can you give some examples ? Great Job on buildout 👍🏼

240Z2NV They are stores that sell new or sometimes used goods and materials at cheaper costs than retail. They buy goods at auction, or in lots from stores and resellers so you never know what they will have day to day. If you look up Salvage, Discount, Builder Surplus, or Home Surplus you may find some in your area. It’s like a treasure hunt every time lol

Have you field tested it yet? I'm curious if there's anything you'd change after it's been a while. Also I was curious how you we're planning to move the driver's side box back and forth if it's full of stuff. Maybe you just don't move it that often?

George harper I have been sleeping in it for the last 6 months and that is what my channel is mostly about at the moment.. Overlanding the US and Canada. I am very happy with it and have no immediate plans to change it when I return, and before my next trip. 2 things that I have thought about, and may do, are: -Put piano hinges, or just better hinges, on the lids. The ones I put on were a cheap option, but they have held up after non stop use for 6 months. -I would have the rear box lid open from the side so I can access it much easier while sitting on the other side of the Jeep. It can still be opened from the inside, but is not as accessible. It would require a redesign though since I have a lip on the other side and I use that open space by the side of the Jeep for storage. In a few videos after this one I think I show how I move it around. But even full of clothes I can move the box from the front to the back just by lifting it and swinging it around (with an open and clean cab to do it in). But since I am living in it I do not ever need to move it. I did for a while though when I was using it for camping and as a daily. It was not a problem. Currently I also have it screwed down to the plywood seat replacement I made, so it does not move on bumpy roads. For sleeping I have a 4” foam mattress with a heavy sleeping bag on top. I sleep better in my Jeep than in my own bed. Here you go... at the 5:25 mark. It is easy even with stuff in it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BOgofUVHVc0.html Also in that video, I did away with straps and secure the boxes through the floor

Thank you for making this video. I have been watching various videos from different channels to get ideas on making storage options. One question I have is why not install a roll cage and hang a hammock form it? I've not been able to find anyone doing this. I am planning on doing it, I was just wondering if maybe there is a reason no one is doing it.
@simpleoverlander

Justin Banister Not a bad idea. Personally I cannot sleep in a hammock so it wouldn’t work for me. Would be an easy way to go though once the roll bars are set up.

Because…roll cage.

what about a guy that is 6'3" i can't remember but... the passenger seat folds forward right?
@simpleoverlander
@simpleoverlander 5 лет назад
You would need to lay corner to corner. Even with the seat all the way forward and it tilted up (it does not fold forward very far on a XJ) I have just enough room to completely stretch out at 5’8” If you did an elevated platform in the whole back area (with storage underneath) and put your head at the passenger seat, and your feet at the back corner on the driver’s side, that would give you enough to be close to stretching out I would think.

Two door xj front seats have the bracket to let you lean the seat forward to get into the back.

What are the final dimensions for all your sides and tops?
@simpleoverlander
@simpleoverlander 5 лет назад
dlinemusic Both boxes are the same except the lid is reversed on one, so when they are both side by side in the back the lids hang over the wheel wells. Bottom plywood: 28L x l9.5W Lid:28L x 24W Sides x2: 28L x 9H Back and front boards: 18L x 9H The dimensions may need adjusting based on the thickness of the side boards. I think I used 1” pine board.

So you had to re-cut the wood didn’t you?
@simpleoverlander
@simpleoverlander 6 лет назад
Joseph Gunter Although I had a few ideas of what I wanted to do, I don’t think I cut anything until I was sure it was what I wanted. I might have had to shorten the top on one side but I don’t remember having to recut much if at all
