The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire is the youngest and last surviving of the six aristocratic Mitford sisters who were famed for their high profile relationships and political affiliations.
She talks to Newsnight's Kirsty Wark about her extraordinary life - including joining her sister Unity for tea with Adolf Hitler when he was leader of Germany.

If one can find it, there was a BBC-PBS series in the 80's titled "Treasure Houses of Britain" that visited Chatsworth, the Cavendish family home in one segment. Deborah and her husband were still the reigning Duke and Duchess residing in the house and to see them both in conversation about the house and its collections and the management of the estate was very interesting. The late Duchess even exhibited a bit of wry humor and her high-bred manner of speech lent another degree of comic relief when she spoke of some renovations she made to the (vast) gardens, specifically a "crinkle crankle" wall and border. Being American, I have no opinion on the vestiges of English nobility, sufficed to say she and her late husband seemed like very nice people who'd experienced a lot of change in the world of the great country houses but had made a success of the estate supporting itself and who took their responsibilities of being knowledgeable, personable stewards of Chatsworth seriously. I think there may have been a follow up show featuring the workings of the estate's business under the current Duke and Duchess, produced long enough ago that Deborah was still alive but living in her "cottage" by then.

You would enjoy the books of Nancy Mitford, who was the Duchess’s sister. Wry very british humour 😍These are a breed of English people who weren’t given to exaggeration, who were (& are)true ‘ladies and gentlemen’, taking life’s little knocks squarely on the chin, never complaining or grumbling about any of it; unfailingly calm, graceful, elegant and gracious. Their speech is considered, articulate ( a rare thing in this age, when you can’t tell if they are actually speaking English, for the amount of slang and profanity in their ‘conversation’). It is a great pity there seems to be such an antipathy to them and almost active measures to disadvantage these people, while encouraging Russian oligarchs who can pay their way into the HOL. Anyway, I hope good breeding, in every sense of the words, will survive all of the stresses of this garish 21st century..

She does not actually apologise for Unity at all during this. She says she wasn't interested in politics when she was young and that she loved who they were not what they thought. Her husband the Duke of Devonshire was a great friend of the Jewish people and a former president of Conservative friends of Israel. May he rest in peace.

The interviewer is irritating the Duchess has more patience than i would have. Had been quite interested in certain aspects of her life. Loved the cottage she moved to after her husband Died.

She comes across as a true lady. She did not serm to resent the questions, which were the obvious ones to ask. The Dutchess was the last of the Mitford family and the last Dutchess of Devonshire. She was absolutely a class act. She was not required to sit for an interview at all. That she did and did it so beautifully adds to her charm.

Had President Kennedy's sister Kathleen lived (killed in a plane during the 2nd world war), Deborah would never have become the duchess of Devonshire. Kathleen was the one married to the eldest son of the duke at the time. Unfortunately both Kathleen and her husband were killed in two seperate plane crashes.

Kathleen's death didn't affect the inheritance of the title - her husband's did. William Cavendish was killed four months after marrying Kathleen Kennedy. Although he was heir to the dukedom, he predeceased his father. Andrew Cavendish became heir when his older brother died.

Just as was said, Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy never became the duchess because her husband died before his father did. So even if she had been alive, she wouldn’t have gotten the title. It still would’ve gone straight to Debo’s husband.

What do you want the interview to say? "I love pink! Do you love pink? Pink is such a beautiful shade!" It's a very balanced interview, some probing questions, some amenable questions about Chatsworth and retirement etc. Reading this comments section I'm concerned people think nobility should always be deferred to and treated with obsequious crawling. The duchess was more than capable to answer the frank questions with frank answers, and we learnt far more about her than had the questions been boring cloying ones.

Too bad the interviewer harped on the politics of Unity and the tabloid rubbish about being pregnant upon her return to England. I would've been far more interested in questions about Debo's own life. The interviewer sounds like she didn't do any real research into the Mitford family or Debo's life before doing this interview. Her memoir, "Wait For Me!" is a delight from start to finish. RIP Deborah Devonshire.

My praise is genuine. I think that she's beautiful. Beauty is beauty and if you have it, you have it. Obviously, it withers with time, but in the case of this very attractive woman, it has not been completely lost.

She was a real Lady! RIP! Noblesse oblige is a French phrase literally meaning "nobility obliges". The Dictionnaire de l’Académie française defines it thus: ⁕Whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly. ⁕ One must act in a fashion that conforms to one's position, and with the reputation that one has earned. The Oxford English Dictionary says that the term "suggests noble ancestry constrains to honorable behavior; privilege entails to responsibility." Being a noble meant that one had responsibilities to lead, manage and so on. One was not to simply spend one's time in idle pursuits.

Hurrah! Very well said. This is something that is SO misunderstood by most people. Of course there are some aristocrats who behave badly (the only ones we really hear about) but by far the majority live low-key lives and do a great deal of public service. We don't hear about it because these people view it as crass and self-serving to be 'seen' doing good (unlike celebrities) Rather, they see their own privilege as an obligation to give back, and they do it diligently, quietly and without expectation of recognition.

She was not particularly welcome in the family (her mother cried when she saw that she had produced another girl), her sisters bullied her and she lost four of he seven children at birth (one of them died in utero). She endured and has just died, aged 94.

Have never met nicer nor more conscientious friends than my German friends. After the Treaty of Versailles 1920, reparations and humiliation of German military leaders brought about a situation where a dictatorship became inevitable. Lloyd George's warnings and common sense did not prevail over the inflexibility and cold-heartedness of Clemenceau. A Tiger indeed!

Really . Do remind me …German did invade a neutral country - Belgium . A state guaranteed by international treaty . They then slaughtered 10% of that population including the Brits. Then they invaded France , then Russia. Sorry do tell me which bit of the German state I am sorry for ? Germany had nearly universal suffrage in 1914 which England did not have for a few years and America was not to get for nearly 100 years . At what point did those voting cheering Germans stop taking responsibility for what they voted for . See 1933 .Hitter was voted into power by the German people . The Kaisers party in the Reichstage got the same level of support. It’s about time the German people accept the pain and suffering they have inflicted on the world . Actually that's completely wrong.It was built beforeany notions of war came about.Its primary purpose was toemploy someof the 7 million unemployed at the time and encourage a general feel good factor within the country. Aside from the roads there were many building programmes including housing. It was all part of an effort to re-build the country devestated by the great warphysically and morally.By the time war came about there was literally no unemployment and moral was extremely high

I think the Duchess loved her sisters for who they were- her sisters not what they chose in life, and who they associated with- like the other poster said- she lives her life. She seems to have a long one and probably achieved alot in it.

She did not ignore them but many ties with Germany . Before the 1st. World War our peoples were very close . We had much more in common with all the anglo saxon Countries than young people realise today our cultures were very similar.

The Dowager D. She put a bullet in her head. That's well documented. The photos I've seen of her after the event show clearly she's wounded. That clip is when she's leaving the hospital in England and she shot herself in Germany. It was several weeks before they could get her out of Germany and then weeks in English hospital so that's why she looks ok. Her sister explains about her personality changes due to the wound after she's home.

If the photos I’ve seen of Unity arriving from Germany you cannot see a head wound. I’ve wondered if that was a ploy to keep her out of prison. Her other Nazis sympathizing sister and brother law were jailed for a while during WWII. But the Mitford sisters were and still are fascinating!

Kurtis Hall His butler's son stole cheques from the Duke, who didn't notice the money going for some time. The mistresses didn't have to steal. When he was too old to have a mistress he would hire a male and female prostitute so that he could watch them. Afterwards the woman had to say, 'good, but not as good as the Duke.'

Yes, Kathleen (nee Kennedy, sister of JFK) married the heir to the dukedom, the Marquess of Hartington, in the UK in 1944. Sadly, the Marquess was killed in France only four months after the marriage. Some time later, Kathleen became romatically involved with the Earl Fitzwilliam but, while flying from Paris to the Riviera in 1948, their light aeroplane crashed, killing them both. Joseph, her father, was the only Kennedy to attend her funeral, which was arranged by the Cavendish family (i.e., the Devonshires).

You become dowager (countess, duchess, etc) when the present duke (your son if you have one; otherwise whoever is the heir) marries and takes a wife, who becomes duchess.

Joshua Taylor The explanation is not fully correct: a dowager simply means a widow - when a peer (or even a King or an Emperor) dies his wife, as a matter of fact, becomes the dowager, regardless of her son's marital status or even if she has a son. This was true, for example, of HM Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who was technically the Dowager Queen, even though she preferred to be called the Queen Mother and was granted this honorific by HM. Within most European systems of aristocracy and gentry, a woman's social rank and position (sorry, I didn't make up the rules!) is determined either by her father's or her husband's, never (or exceptionally rarely) by her son's (or daughter's). A better example: when Queen Victoria ascended to the throne her Aunt Queen Adelaide, the widow of William IV became the Dowager Queen. When her husband was alive she was Her Majesty The Queen, after he died she became Her Majesty Queen Adelaide, the Dowager Queen. It's not as confusing as it may seem. Another example of correct usage, though fictional, can be found in Downton Abbey: the wife of the Earl of Grantham is the Countess of Grantham while his mother is the Dowager Countess of Grantham though they would both be addressed as Lady Grantham (by their social equals) or Your Ladyship/Milady (by social inferiors)
