E39 Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

In this video I am replacing the oil pan gasket and engine mounts on my 2002 BMW 530i with a M54 engine. This is not a step by step guide but a good visual to refer to when completing the job. Hopefully It provides some assistance to anyone trying to complete the job.

Wow impressive video! I am original owner of a 2003 530I and I need to replace oil pan gasket after just 200,700 miles. Not sure I ambitious or patient enough to do this one myself but your video is excellent nevertheless.

my GOD... im glad i have the M5 variety of E39. i just did the oil pan gasket today and there's absolutely NOTHING in the way.. and engine mounts have taken me 20min... it's 3 very accessible nuts per side, a block of wood under the pan - raise the engine an inch, slide the old ones out and new ones in!

Great video now I just have to decide if I want to do the job, it's not my car I'm doing it for a friend-neighbor, he has a 350z I work on also. He bought the car for 400 bucks it has 92,000 miles on it and it's a little rough, I need to do brakes all around, the rotors are worn thin, window regulators at least two, tires and the pan gasket, I don't have a garage but a driveway and as long as there are no special BMW tools I need that cost a fortune I have power tools sockets wrenches and four jacks and stands. Now the big question, what do you think is a reasonable price to charge for this job, I've read estimates from 700 to over a thousand, it's basically just nuts and bolts with no reprogramming of modules or anything like that, I thought of 800 plus parts, I just did an oil change so if I drain it I to a clean container maybe I could reuse it, it looks like someone did the valve cover gasket already because they forgit to put those caps that cover the bolts back on.

Enjoyed the video, I'm in the middle of doing my oil pan gasket. Found the 21 pan bolts, the 3 torx bolts but could only find 2 of the long pan bolts. Any advice on where the other 2 are?

If you Google M54 Oil pan you will see the location for the 3 torx screws. They are located at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions on the back of the pan.

I locked the steering wheel and removed the bolt for the steering coupler but the steering coupler did not slide out at all. From what I can tell very few people actually have their steering coupler move during this job.

Just a question I did the same years ago on my 528i 1997..but if I knew then what I know now I would buy the upgrade kit for the oil pump and a brand new oil pan and bolds... You agree?

I would definitely buy new oil pan bolts. I cannot say whether or not it is worth buying a new oil pump for one of these cars. If it is a common issue for an e39 then this would be a good opportunity to replace it.

Hi, what did you use as a jacking point for the rear of the car?

I just used the Rear Diff. You can use the frame rails and lift one side at a time if you would like though.

Do you need an engine lift for this or is there any way to do it without one safely

The engine support bar or something similar is required in order to gain the clearance necessary to pull the pan out.
