Salt and pepper shakers are super easy to make, use very little material, and you can batch out a few sets in an afternoon. They are easily customizable too with different wood species, shapes, and any decorative elements you want to include. The two I made here are relatively simple with very few details.

Thanks for sharing this "simple" project. I made a couple sets for our Thanksgiving dinner since we're having about 20 people at it. I might even make a few sets for some gifts this year. Instead of using laminated stock, I had some 2 1/8" square locust that I planed to 2" square and then used. In an effort to use scraps, I used some 5/16" black walnut for the pepper and 1/4" cherry for the salt. The bottoms are 1/4" hickory.

Hey Jay Great Built as usual. I have a non-related question. I see you have been through some table saws in your videos a Porter cable I believe, a grizzley and now the Saw Stop. My question: Is there a great difference in quality between the Saw Stop and the Grizzley? Other than the safety feature I mean.
@MidGAOutdoor

ive often wondered how those were made. one could also do some interesting creations with them on a lathe. Also what brand of forstner bits do you have? I have some cheap ones and I cant drill thru end grain of even pine. Thanks

Where do you find your specialty wood? Not sure I've seen these types at Lowe's or Home Depot.
@LarryBloom
@LarryBloom 6 лет назад
I made some like these, and have two comments: First, I made the mistake of using pretty hard woods (padauk & red oak) for the materials, and found that even with a brand-new, high quality Forstener bit, my drill press bogged down *terribly*, and the bit got incredibly hot. Admittedly, it is not a very high powered drill press, but it still was surprising. Second, I decided that aesthetically, thinner and taller was much preferred...but then add in both my first comment (tough to drill out) and the fact that I now was drilling much deeper...and you can see it was "less than fun". PLUS, my Forstener bits were not long enough to go full length on the top chamber (but still hollowed out enough to give quite a large fill).

Jay, I really like the large section of wood behind the blade on that sled. Seems like a nice safety feature. Do you find that it gets in the way at all?
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 лет назад
+Michael Lawing That's actually to keep the sled together. The blade was set higher than my fences so without it the blade would split the sled in two.

Hi Jay, great project as always, thanks for posting. I know you are not big on tool review-type questions, but I'm curious whether you are still lukewarm on that planer now that you seem to be using it now for more milling work? In the market for one, so trying to gather real info from users I respect. Thanks again for another great project!
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 лет назад

By running the boards through the planer at an angle, does this help with snip or is there a reason to pass the boards through at an angle? My next tool purchase is a planer so I am new to them. Thanks!
@retiree1033
@retiree1033 8 лет назад
+Jacob Ambuehl Passing the boards through the planer at an angle helps to even out the wear across the whole width of the blades.
@JayBates
@JayBates 8 лет назад
+Jacob Ambuehl On my machine it drastically reduces snipe.
@doubledarefan
@doubledarefan 8 лет назад
+Ian Garthwaite Wear leveling is easily done by passing boards from side-to-side. You run the first board thru on the left, the next board next to where the first was run, the third next to where the second was run, and so on until you reach the right side. Then you repeat the cycle. This distributes the wear across the cutters.

OK - Just because my wife has beat this into me: Salt shakers typically have 5 holes and pepper typically have 3. If you go to those fancy-smancy restaurants, that's how you know. Great project, though.
