Update 2020:
-Soundtrack is submitted to Spotify, Google Play, Apple Music etc. as per your request. Artist name is VICON, tracks are "The Haunted Lighthouse" and "Unconscious Spirit"
vicon.bandcamp.com/album/easy...
-The video is 11 years old. Back in the day new analog sticks was fairly expensive. Although this is a "quick fix" if you just want to play games right now, I highly suggest you guys just buy new thumbsticks at this point.

If there are any typos etc I'm sorry about that. I made this really quick!
I was searching everywhere on the internet to find an easy and cheap way to fix the loose analog stick on my N64 controllers. I couldn't seem to find any. New analog sticks are rare and expensive these days. After all, not everyone has the money to buy a new analog stick or controller. After analyzing the analogstick myself I discovered where the tearing happenes and fixed it with some tape. The controller almost felt like new again! This is how I did it!
ABOUT THE MUSIC: Surprisingly a lot of people actually want to know what music I use in this video. I composed and recorded those myself. Here are the download links:
First song: uhort.no/moduler/download.php?...
Second song: uhort.no/moduler/download.php?...

it's clearly visible that the stick hangs in the video and doesnt move back to center o.O

+Tom my It doesn't stick, it's just a bad example and moves it too quickly. If you watch it in .25 speed, you can see it moving back to middle. woop, this is my sis's account o.o

+Holley Austin Actually it may stick a bit if you put on too much tape, which I did in this video. FAIL! It's easily fixed with lube though. Thanks for the support anyways though. Maybe I should make an update to this some day?

Spectacular work! I just did this to all 4 of my old n64 controllers and they're playing like the day I bought them. The tape measurements were a little different with each controller but the basic concept is there. Thanks a million.

A friend of mine has an old n64, one of the controllers had a loose analog stick so I used this quick fix. I also used s little too much tape but with a little lube and wear it works like new. Thanks for the tip.

This is the best fix it video for the N64 Controller! My only input is that if your controller is even slightly responsive, make the tape strips only about 1 1/4 inch. I did a few trial and error runs on this! With this length the control stick should relocate back into neutral position with little stiffness. If it's still stiff, open it back up and take a little tape off either the up down ( neck section), or the left right ( the rectangular section ). This will keep it running great! Good Luck

You can get a gamecube stick built for n64 controllers, about 10$ on ebay, not that great for shooters or racers, but for any "run around" kinda game like zelda/mario/donkey kong64/smash bros its 100% better and never have to worry about it becoming loose
@TheToillMainn
@TheToillMainn 7 лет назад
Sorry, late reply. I've tried them, however, all of them seems to be "drifting". All of them makes the character walk to the left on its own in every game. I will however make a new video soon on how to change to a new, original thumbstick, and how to lubricate it. This will make it last way longer!
@cd3064
@cd3064 5 лет назад
TheToillMainn yeah it's cause they don't compare to n64s precision. It seems that is the tradeoff. Better precision will have an analog stick that wears out faster cause it's not as thick as the others but it is that thickness than makes it lose a ton of precision

good tutorial! before i try it out, doesn't the tape limit the maximum movement of the controller stick, signal-wise? (ie you push it forward all the way but the N64 reads it as a 70% push)?

wow this video really helped alot! I am fixing the black gears that are grinding away with epoxy as well... the issue I am having is that it is tough to sand down the inside of the loop on the smaller gear (which controls left and right on the thumbstick). What did you do to get these areas and how did you get the epoxy to stay within the loop? The larger gear (up and down controls) was much easier to apply and shave down and works perfectly. I am thinking about picking up a micro grinder for this project.

I just re-did two of my controllers, and this works pretty well! it does more for the V axis than the H axis, but it does work! Also, as a tip while you have it open anyway: apply about 4 layers of tape to the backs of the shoulder button boards. It stops those from slipping back and makes the buttons far more responsive!

I tried and the results were the following: the up and down movements got really better, looks like new. However, the left and right movements didn't improve. I suppose one of the tapes is for the up/down while the other is for left/right. If so, which tape corresponds to the each one?

@CZroe The grinding is between the part on the stick and the black plastic parts inside which is for the control itself. The little round nub at the end of the stick is not what's making them loose when it's tearing down. it's the black parts which is having a hard time, not the thumbstick actually, the reason I tape the stick instead of the black parts is because it's easier than taping the black ones. YES, the round nub on the stick itself pushes it up, but it's not what's making it loose.

It works for all of them but the problem with really worn out sticks is that it becomes very stiff. Nintendo did produce replacement parts for all consoles till the Wii came with it's VC. You can still get stick online but they're getting more expensive and rare. I don't know if a third party have started producing them but I hope so. Thank you for your comment!

@TheToillMainn
@TheToillMainn 14 лет назад
@Apell1 Yeah it's supposed not to have any empty spaces between the stick and the black parts. It's the black parts that wear out over time. Now, it's possible to get better results by applying tape on those rather than on the stick. I haven't tried it myself yet but other people have had very good results with it and it comes to no surprise really. Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
