Eddie was my favorite goalie when I played @ Glastonbury High. Billy Smith taught me how to play goalie when I was 13. (1973) It was the summer after his 1st season with the Islanders. It took place at the no longer Glastonbury Arena, where the New England and Hartford Whalers practiced. I scrimmaged with the N.E. Whalers @ 16. I never got recruited. I'm a Czech Jew. Jim Salfi hated me immediately when he heard my father was the Dean of Engineering ( Nuclear and Aerospace) at Hartford's working professional graduate campus in Hartford. (Pratt and Whitney Engineers mostly)

Eddie Giacomin would be a great addition to the Order of Canada, as a living legend and an inspiration to many goalies, including myself, who wore the mask and played the game. His story of being badly burnt and not surrendering to doctor's advices to not pursue hockey is a testament to his spirit, focused energy and athletic abilities that made him one of the most iconic netminders in NHL history. He knew how to entertain and how to engage his fans, and it was deafening to hear the NYR fans chant his name when he played against his former team mates while donning the Detroit uniform, a class act with modesty and humility.

Ranger fans are as brutal as they were loyal. I remember a game when Carol Vadnais was not doing enough checking. During a break in the action, some brilliant yahoo let out with: “Hit ‘em with your purse, Carol!” with a effeminate lisp. The crowd laughed hysterically!

Ratelle was always a disaster in the playoffs, Bobby Rousseau covered for him and led the Rangers in points in the 1972 playoffs.

I feel bad for Eddie. In his 83 years, the Rangers have won only 1 Stanley Cup. Up until 1967, before expansion, the Rangers only had to be better than 5 other teams and simply couldn't. So in 1994, the NY Rangers devised a clever plan to end their embarrassing streak of futility by putting NY Ranger jerseys on the Edmonton Oilers team. It worked. in 1994, Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Lowe, Esa Tikkanen, and Craig McTavish won the Stanley Cup, but wearing Rangers jerseys instead.
